- @pout.net: Why do you log me out in just 20mins? Do you not want members to think for more than 20mins about writing a post?
Goddammit, 2nd try, retyping everyhing from scratch.
@rez, thanks for the reply.
In case you'd like more detailed "criticism" about your work, than "a few liners":
What i overally liked: You synthesizing oldschool feel with modern visuals. Kinda like - you know, what nowadays is knows as "neon-glow look" has nothing to do with how stuff did look like in the 80's... instead, it is how it FELT LIKE back then, without actually (realistically) being like that back then.
Two things i didn't like so much: Jumping on the raymarching bandwaggon. Then again, the way you did it allowed you to have "modern" visuals combined with "retro"-feel. So even though i may not like the approach that much, the way you used it felt just perfect as a synthesis of "retro-feel" and "modern-fidelity". So, its not really something i can criticize - it worked perfectly, even if i may have doubts about the technical side (just throwing processing power at stuff, to escape 64/4kb? Feels like cheat (throw ridiculous amounts of processing power, at storage bottlenecks... and only top-notch uber rigs can run it, as opposed to i.e. amiga times).
But for something more constructive - walking through the demo scenes:
- triforce intro. Awesome. Only improvement proposal i have, is that the "pacing" should perhaps be more linear, and less log. What i mean with this, is that initially there is quite a bit of "wait" for anything to happen.... then the "finish" on that scene happens rather quickly (and i do love the "crescendo"!!!).
- 1st raymarching scene: Transition works superb, but the actual visuals feel a bit underwhelming? At this point, i someway suspect that this demo is not just arranged for presentation at a compo, but also is a history of your own abilities? In any case, fine by me because....
- the next raymarch scene kicks ass, and removes any doubts about "low-fidelity"
- next up: someway feels like a "filler" scene. Not a bad one really.... it's "okay" ... given that the next scene would again push things up...
- but that doesn't happen. Enter IMO the lowest point of the entire demo. This IMO is the case because two things work together: 1. It is ANOTHER cube based scene, AFTER 3 cube-based scenes preceding it, and: 2. To me, dubmood's soundtrack at this point reaches the lowest creativity and execution. So kinda: visuals and programming - as well as sound - both simultaneusly - to me - reach their lowest point..... not good. IMO, this scene (in live vid: 02:00-02:35) is THE area where one could have "elevated" the overall demo above of what it is. I also strongl suspect, that all the negative comments about dubmood's soundtrack would read quite different, if that single section were different, visuals and music wise.
- 1st tunnel: okay, by nowadays demostandards, it's just "good", but given the pacing, it kicks just perfectly.... especially thanks to the sinus-formed cables, which make it look more "organic" than it is,
- 2nd tunnel with greetings: Normally i'd think "oh, ANOTHER tunnel", but oh... how fitting it looks, and how perfect the colors are..... its like perfectly 80's scifi-style. I really don't know how to do it better. It to me perhaps is the most aesthetically consistent and fitting scene in the entire demo! It just looks perfect given the target style. So even though we get a 2nd tunnel in a row, this one is just so "polished" that what i feel is "perfect, awesome!" instead of "meh, one more!"
- greetings/fuckings cube scene: Technically not that impressive... but again, rzr direction and pacing trumpts tech. Perfect placing, as you can hear from the audience. Ideal point in time, to place that "attitude" without (ironically) actually pissing anyone off.
- "kaleidoscope tunnel": A lot of people have commented on this already, so i really do not have much to add. Yes, it may technically perhaps be a "simple" effect, but oh how it works. Awesome! The only "cricicism" i may have is, that it follows so quickly on the "mid-demo" 2nd tunnel. It's as if the demo goes right from "mid" to "crescendo" without intermission. I think the absence of something "good" in-between mainly is why some people perceive the demo as "short". I think something in-between
- ending scene: Not many peole have commented on this, which - imo - is a shame. I really LOVE this scene. It fits so perfectly as a "gameover"-style finish as well as placement of the razor logo. I just wish it would have been about 1,0secs longer. Honestly, i love the mood and nostalgia of that scene. It fits your "retro style with modern interpretation" style perfectly... please, more of this! - isokadded on the 2012-12-29 23:16:49

- Quite impressive use of ressources given that this is software rendering, and the atmosphere and direction is great. Didn't like the textlines (i prefer scenes to speak for themselves), and the framerate varies a lot on a per scene basis.

- A bit unfortunate that it had to compete inside such a strong compo (then again, it made that compo even more awesome). At another time and space, it would probably have gotten 1st or 2nd. But look at it like this rez: It ended up above all the "classical" entries, and only those with strong emotional "storytelling" beat you. Plus, the live atmosphere (watch the live vid folks!) was awesome.
