This was already amazing at Assembly, and it still is! Much kudos for working out the problems, and please make sure you visit us in Suomiland next year too. It was awesome partying with you :).

This was cool...respect for so much content, though some of it felt really messy and unpolished (especially the music, which was very cool but incoherent and poorly mixed).

Overall though, one of the top 64k's this year I think :)
rulez added on the 2009-09-13 07:05:03 by ferris ferris
A hint for this type of music so far: it felt like it was trying to be more epic than it was...I think for a tune like this the volume could be pumped up and perhaps less parts playing at once...a bit of a cleaner feel would've given it the extra oomph it needed.

Once again though, I really liked this :)

Yeah, this was nice :). I liked the mood even though it felt mostly like an object show. However, the objects were nicely designed and it felt like the visuals had coherence and a nice style :). The music had some problems with the audio production even though I liked some part of it quite a lot, especially the parts where it goes into major. Very cute :D. It might have been a tad incoherent at places but then again it is nice to let the music change together with the different scenes. All in all I enjoyed this :).

What a nice 64k! Nice scenes and models, and some really good textures too! A bit less DOF-blur would made me able to enjoy some of the scenes even more.
Awesome work guys!

Would be thrilling to see that paired with a some math-magic in the future releases.

Was looking forward to this for ages, and it didn't disappoint. Impressive amount of content, and textures which successfully avoid the shonkiness that can plague even the best 64ks.

Best 64k of 2009 (so far), naturally.

This demo requires supercomputer to be precalculated in reasonable amount of time... Anyway thumb up for a good picture. Although DOF (if it is DOF, of course :) ) looked more like random blur.

a really nice techdemo that bleeds from a bit too many pitfalls (if your synth can make nice pads, dont ruin the music with drums, your camera movements are awful, etc.)

certainly the best 64k of the year so far.

Another one of those looks-like-an-ordinary-demo 64ks. Very nice artwork and slick rendering, but not very interesting all in all.

Yep, very nice models and textures, but the music couldn't really support the visuals.
Maybe it's buggy? The melody samples were almost inaudible, all I could hear were the drums and bass.

A few words about the complaints about odd music and direction - the scenes were being put together while I was still writing the synth, so I had to fit the music around the demo, rather than the "proper" way, which is to write the music and fit the graphics around it - you can make a scene shorter, but you can't cut a bar of music half way through. This why it's a bit incoherent at times.

As for the melody "samples" being not loud enough - there aren't any samples. Everything is synth generated (linux version to follow.. we're not ripping gm.dll samples here). I'm not sure why people are saying the drums are too loud - I practically rewrote the entire back-end to the synth to make the drums audible :) That said, they do have a very low resonant frequency and I haven't coded an EQ effect, so it probably depends on what speakers you're using. The massive speakers at sundown gave the drums a real kick, unlike my headphones, but I take gargaj's comment.. my synth is much better at pads than drums. I'll go back to ambient next time :-)

Hope we made a few people's day with this anyway! Sundown rocked.

PS. I'll be open-sourcing the synth soon, when I've cleaned it up and usable by someone other than a complete nerd like me. I'm about to start like the 10th rewrite or whatever it is I'm up to.
added on the 2009-09-14 00:23:49 by MeteoriK MeteoriK
I'm just thumbing it up because you've spent so much time on the synth and because eventually it will work on non-windows.
great intro! high quality objects, textures, and effects, and well designed scenes. as for the synth and music, impressive pads but the percussion could use some refinement. :)

Approximate delivers. Indeed.

Although, I did notice that its quite memory hungry. While running it uses about 800 Mb Mem usage and 1600 Mb VM Size. And it seems to do so while causing page faults on my 2 Gb AMD system from the periodic heavy stuttering I see. As a comparison I checked Frameranger and it runs on about 650,750.

added on the 2009-09-14 02:36:39 by Yomat Yomat
@yomat: we had HUGE memory/stack problems when we ported this stuff to windows. We wrote it on linux, then discovered the hard way how fragile the windows stack is! At least linux has the courtesy to crash when you break the stack! It's a miracle you got it to run at all :-)

probably the current leader of the (ableit limited) 64k class of 09. the textures (the wood) and the lighting are the highlights of the show, followed by the meshes.

approximate are coming on in leaps and bounds as they get more comfortable with finishing things and releasing them - this makes 3 in the last year, congrats! the question that remains to be answered is where they go from here. if they want to make a great 64k, not just a competent 64k, they need to go beyond summarising whats gone before and start adding something new. i look forward to seeing what they do next.

daXX: the CPU should be *just* fast enough for the synth, which is a bit of a hog. As for graphics card, I think you might be a bit under spec here. 8600 or above can cope with it.

Just saw it from the video. Really nice 64k. Great modelling textures and lighting. The DOF looks nice, but it's a tad too strong for my liking. Music was good too, better than average 64k intro tune imo. Also a lot of detailed content, and it has a nice atmosphere throughout the whole intro with a nice flow that doesn't break at any point. It's a shame it doesn't really have a climax as it just flows nicely thourgh. Overall, really good detailed and good of quality production, one of the best 64ks this year.

Jesus Christ! The modelling and texture work here is better than most 20mb+ demos around today. I was truly amazed that you could come up with something so detailed and epic in 64k.

I really liked the music, but it was glitching like crazy.

Great work, but I'll also echo what Smash said.

Worked well in full resolution here (1920x1200), but I particularly disliked the depth of field blur, seemed either badly focused, or just bad looking in most places.
Perhaps due to the very high res ?
Appart that, I love the theme, the variation in models; plenty of good ideas, and nice and warm color scheme.

Alright! We'v finally done it. Final is finally up. This should fix the crashes that some people have experienced. Uses about 1/3 as much memory as the party version and contains some graphical fixes that didn't make it to the party deadline and includes a Linux build as well! (although win version works perfectly in wine ofcourse ;-) ) Enjoy!

What has been said about your textures, mesh and light model on the bright side, and on your music and camera on the down side.

It's good to see a leading group in the 64k land. Looking forward to seeing your next prod!

Very high quality 64k intro. It must have been a lot of work!

MeteoriK, have you open-sourced your synth now?

totally groundbreaking intro!

i can NOT believe that everything fit into 64k °_°;

To anyone asking about open-sourcing the synth.. the reason I haven't bothered yet is that I've been concentrating so hard on the new one that I never got round to making the old one user-friendly enough to tempt people to work with it (more to the point, I'm sure they're more interested in the new one).

That said, one person now has SVN access to it and has successfully built it and played with it. If you want it and you're planning to make a demo with it, just email me at [email protected] with a username and password, and I'll set up an SVN account.

I WILL o/s the new one after we've made two demos with it, whenever that is... as long as it doesn't end up dominating synth music compos like V2 :-) To echo Sole, who wrote her own synth for the breakpoint synthmusic compo, Come on guys! Synth music is as much about the synth as the music! Write a bloody synth!

I could recommend a couple of good books on synth design and DSP and give you some source code to work with for anyone who's interested.

i missed some (shader) effects in this which would have really a nice touch.

Has some appeals in certain places visually. But I have to thumb it down for the music and the "look at us" we're trying to tell some boring story. Embrace your medium...

I would not mind if this whole demo was only about that absolutely beautiful shock ball. What a cool scene, wow!
