Optimus.. you fuckin' rule!! I have seen demos on strange platforms, on printers, on Microsoft excel.. but I've never seen a demo made with DOOM! =)))

(you need zDoom in order to run this wad =)

Not enough demo-ish parts, becomes a bit boring after the first half.
added on the 2005-04-27 01:23:15 by beavis77 beavis77
The second half is a replication of the partyplace.. including last year's monitor headbang =)..

Cool. I always loved the music of E1M1. Some more effects wouldn't have hurt, though.

hehe.. thumb up for the idea and the fact that nobody at work here got it :)
rulez added on the 2005-04-28 09:49:53 by okkie okkie
nice idea, could have shown more effects and should not idle displaying the effect names
using doom as a platform is definate wild material. Second part had no meaning for me at all.. but the first part was great to see.
rulez added on the 2005-04-28 12:34:19 by psonice psonice
would have been better if it had more effects, or was shorter

Good idea! As some others mentionned, it could have been more intense, ie. more effects but displayed for a shorter time...
rulez added on the 2005-05-01 14:38:46 by exocet exocet
good idea, but it still is doom, you can't do much with it :(
added on the 2005-05-01 15:50:20 by Lupin Lupin
I originally had much more ideas for effects, and transitions with those black walls/floors and some other ones in solid colors, a lot more stuff but deadlines were close. I agree now that I should have kept shorter the second part (only the entrance, main partyplace and inside joke with the monitor should exist) and had thrice of the stuff of the style from the very beginning, now I am thinking it it would be really cool. But now it's released as it is ;P

As for the effects, they are not animations but tricks I really love and were inspired from few tricky WADs on the net. A way to find out how some things work is by using the Doom Builder editor (by pressing W, you go to a 3d view of the map, where you can change the allignment of a texture you are looking with the cursor keys. And press the mouse key to see the original texture used). In few words, most of the tricks were done by having a wall splitted in tiny line segments of length one (this detail caused the WAD to crash in the old doom engine, that's why the older plasma walls in some older WADs have no less than length 4, but you can see the trick there and it's a bit non continuous) all with the scroll left function enabled, and then a special texture combined with a unique X allignment for each of them, made the trick! You have to see it with the editor and scroll the allignment of one of the tiny segments to understand..

I like tricky stuff in WADs. Did you knew btw that Hugo Elias (the guy with the websites with gfx algorithm tutorials) did once a deathmatch WAD with some really tricky stuff? I love especially the vector flag and the reflective floor which made my jaw drop (Runs at plain doom, just new gfx and level editing tricks). I found a link at his website which didn't worked, but here is the working link in doomworld files.

I am really wondering now if I should make (I said no at the beginning, but now I am thinking it..) a Doomonstration 2 with all the ideas and 100% purely in the starting demostyle, or leave the idea. The wildness is exploited but not the ideas..

it's interesting to use gamers tools to create demoscene prods
but it miss more crazy ideas to transform original concept of the game in a real art and abstract world
The first time I've really impressed by doom.

Interesting concept, although I fail to find a version of Zdoom that the demo runs on I can still play the level. Zdoom either complains it needs a newer version of itself or an older :S
rulez added on the 2014-09-17 12:07:47 by El Topo El Topo
Oh yeah, the damn different versions of demo recording. It was a problem even in old doom versions. I didn't even know it doesn't run anymore, I only watch the video. What I could do is see if I can find which exactly version of Zdoom it needs and add it to the archive.
added on the 2014-09-17 12:31:13 by Optimus Optimus
Cool, v1.22 says "newer version plz" and v2.1.7 says "no, older!". There is no version in-between on the Zdoom website.
added on the 2014-09-17 12:50:54 by El Topo El Topo
Now the download link is updated with proper zdoom version inside.
