It's using a hardware bug/feature that if all rendering is off and VRAM port address points to the palette memory, it will display the color of that entry as a background color. This is why there's a big PPUADDR read slide during active display.
This effect, combined with color emphasis, had been discovered and made into a full color palette demo almost two decades ago. But nothing more had been done to it until now. - isokadded on the 2025-04-23 05:28:43
