Code generation of gfx. in 3D programs

I watched Digi's seminar at Revision Party on the Maya to WebGL conversion, and was utterly fascinated by it. I would 1)like to know how it's done (do I need grounding in compiler theory before this?) and 2) like to know if there's a sub-sub culture that is interested in this sort of stuff.....?
