What turbo board is recommended for a REAL A1200...

category: general [glöplog]
Actually, watching Amiga demos on an actual PAL monitor does look better than on WinUAE, but i suspect that has to do with the vsync and blurring.

yeti: Quality has nothing to do with resolution. Everytime I'm at my parents' place I notice how shitty the TV programme is. Ok, there are some quite interesting things, but that's still less than 20%. (Actually the 80/20 rule works here as well. And we can modify it to 90/10 and it still works.)
So TV is like making a big pile of shit where HDTV is like making the pile at least five times bigger. ;)
However. What I meant with "more and more support gfx boards" was that the releases support both either PAL 320 x 256 or RTG 320 x 240.
Such as nearly every EPH release since Adam Malysz.
So if ya want to build up a "high end" classic A1200 you'll
have to go for a tower solution with f.e. Mediator PCI board
etc.

For just watching demos I guess it's ok to stick to an original
A1200 with a decent accelerator and 64Megs of fastRAM on
the Blizzard board. And consider yourself installing the
Oxypatcher to the startup sequence.

and for this "antialiasing" issue:
PAL/NTSC output belongs (imho) to a video standard output device to asure the best displaying quality.
One who saw a production f.e. on a doublelined 800x600 stretched WinUAE and later on the C=1084s
will spot the world of a difference in between.
But on the other hand:
reading stuff in PAL HiRes 640x512 is eyekiller for sure ;)
so in such case a gfx board makes sense.

madnenmann: why did you mention quality in this thread?

My eyes SUCK and there is NOTHING that can be done to correct them, SAVE using fonts that ARE NOT ANTIALIASED and are DESIGNED TO BE ABLE TO BE READ.

Oddly enough, the majority of humanity actually relies on anti-aliasing for a more pleasant reading experience, I get fidgety and fussy without ClearType, even on regular CRTs. Feel free to not use this feature, perhaps the invariable capslock twitch will disappear ;)

it would be unfair to say "blurry and not properly focused" since that would imply something negative.

pezee suXXX

Yeah, brilliant penmanship pointdexter :( (At least Xeron called it by name)

Shifter: which is where it pisses me off that more and more systems are REMOVING THE OPTION.

It's fine to have the option so you can turn it on or off... I guess some people actually have a better experience by blurring the letters. No clue how, at all.
aww i thought i made you angry, its just them coders

There is one downside to watching demos on a PAL screen, and thats the 15Khz whine from the horizontal refresh being in the audible spectrum.

xeron: most demos include "a soundtrack". There are ways of making this "soundtrack" drown out the noise you mentioned.
this is "true". but it was the only downside I could think of.

Commodore 1084S is pretty nice.

the blur testing range shall be a simple starfield on black
background from right to left.
Winner is the monitor with the longest lasting glow \o/

Will not work for me, my 1081 is not able to display a black background anymore. ;)

Do you guys think a 040 would cut it? I can play Fake electronic lightshow on UAE full speed whilst emulating an 040 and some extra fast ram.

I just (finally) found an A1200 here in the states and now I have to seriously consider what turbo board I should get.

Don't buy 040. It's actually even slower than a 030/50MHz solution (eg Bilzzard 1230).
