Experienced trackers required (paid work)
category: general [glöplog]
My company is launching a ringtone wholesale service that is going to be marketed towards content providers.
We are seeking a musical tweak guru / chiptune genious that knows how to get the best possible sound out of the crap sound chips that grace the nokia range of mobile phones both mono and polyphonic.
I'm turning my sights to the demoscene as this is where the talent lies.
We pay £13.20 per track with each track taking an experienced person about 15 - 30 minutes to complete.
If your interested email me [email protected]

Give a top-notch Nokia phone for music testing and I guess it would be a great deal for all the freelancers out there.
Furthermore, you could also set up some kind of music compo, among which you can select your fav entries and pay a reward to the authors.

Great idea Dixan.
Dixan i don't even have a free nokia!! I like the idea of a comp doubt i would have the time to moderate it though! (i already have one comp running for something else).
how would one track musick for a cellphone? =)
the end result is a GM MIDI.
ztracker? ;)
ztracker? ;)
I would try to make something for my cheapo phone, but one cannot know how anything sounds on anything else because it's impossible to test. Then again, there is a renderer which is used in many (not all!) phones, but i recall it costs more than one can pay from these 13f (how much is it anyway? pleeeeease post only in EUR) taken even many, many times, Bying a costy phone doesn't make sense for this either. The same probably goes to software which allowes to create Scalable Polyphony script (which determines how to play when there are not enough synth channels). Naturally, a phone should play *any* GM file, but the result is less than predictable. leeres, sorry, but it seems you are pissing into the void. ;)
eye do you know the name of the renderer?. There is a big demand over here for this so if I had something to go on I would buy / get the renderer. Alternatively what about a softsynth such as the yamaha xg running in GM mode, that allows you to limit the polyphony.
In euros our payout rate works out at 19.60 EUR per song.

I stumbled over the renderer 1/2 a year ago, when i was googling for an FM synth source just for interest. ;) From what i recall it is an extended FM synth, but it uses not only sine wave, but also square, sawtooth and noise. This *might* come close to Creative's extended FM Synth, which also had square and sawtooth. Creatives EFM was used from some revision of Soundblaster 16 through Vibra and to most advanced ISA cards. But now i stare on devices of my SB Live and it appears they threw it out.
And i would believe Yamaha XG would not obey to SP (how to create SP anyway?). And hey, using GM to test out ringtones gives you stuff which doesn't misuse the FM synth in a creative way. ;) On the other hand, some phones are probably using (or will probably be increasingly using) a wavesample-based synth. I bet Samsung has yet a lot of their unsold synth + 1 MB ROMchips lying around. ;) I also do. ;>

Umm... I should dig my Vibra SB16 and do some adlib shit to get back to the ugly FM feeling :)
Why on earth is the first reply to an offer of paid work an advise of how to exploit musicians to do most work for free?
Stelthz: who ever wrote "for free"?
Since when do we condone cheapskate companies trying to rip off poor geeks here?
dixan: Because they only have to play the top n participants in the compo, they do not have to pay you for all their b-rated musics which did not take part in the compo.
superplek: Indeed, most people are just too excited about scene related work that they do not care about payment.

stelthz: my idea was to make a "ringtone" compo and to give money to whoever gets selected by the sponsoring jury (in the sense that the selected tunes will actually be used for the ringtone selling system).
Of course no one expects the sponsors to pay for tunes that they are not going to use anywhere.

leeres: what i wrote means that i don't know how it's called, don't have a link or anything, because i didn't consider paying that much for something like that anyway.
Lee Rees. I remember that name. :/
oh wayfinder, you don't seem keen on mister rees.. please enlighten us!
Hi lads thanks for the support and thanks to all those that applied, we've got it covered now so wont need any more applicants.
Just one question though, why do some people think this is "exploiting musicians"?

cause music ought to be free and open so that everyone can improve it and add to it!!!
This sounds like conversion work. Have some jerk with a cheap midi controller do it. It will mean less bad trance around as it would occupy their time.
The idea that music should be free in my book is wrong and this way of thinking is what actually causes artists to get ripped off, either by the record labels themselfs or by piracy. there is a whole generation of mp3 file sharers who are growing up thinking its ok to copy music for free.
I think artists should have the choice wether they charge for their music without receiving prejudice.
People with talent should be rewarded, i.e. get paid.
