I objected to OpenID because it seemed from the limited description Gasman first gave that it'd allow any third-party servers easy access to all OpenID-enabled sites. Gasman clarified that it doesn't. I now somewhat understand the idea behind OpenID, and though I don't see why it's that important to Demozoo, an open, well thought-out and decentralised standard for login procedures can't be worse than SceneID anyway. You would connect your profile to one site at a time, deciding case-by-case if you trust the administrators of each website, and you'd be free to create multiple profiles. So OpenID doesn't seem insecure or untrustworthy in any way.
I objected to the way Demozoo links productions (first uploaded to Pouet) via handles, to pictures uploaded to Slengpung by a 4th/5th party. This automatically grants a level of exposure to sceners in connection with their releases that I for one never asked for and never wanted. I release demos to get them out into the public domain, not to exhibit my drinking habits to the world. Gasman agreed straight away that the direct links to Slengpung crossed that line and removed them. So no problem there, as far as I'm concerned.
I also objected to Slengpung hosting those pictures in the first place. It's a blatant violation of privacy and very much out of tune with why I chose to participate in the scene in the first place. But the main thing that got to me was the fact that the FAQ on slengpung.com was arrogant and insulting on this issue. Melwyn promptly remedied that, and although a database like Slengpung should always be opt-in for the people unknowingly (or even unwillingly) depicted, opt-out is at least an option now, and the Slengpung people no longer express deliberate indifference to privacy issues, which is the main thing after all.
I hope that clarifies my position to all these UK people who find my libertarian idealism unsettling. ;)

I agree with the privacy angle in general.. but in this case, I don't personally see any real reason to worry. It's good to stand up for someone if they've got a legitimate concern, but each person needs to think for a second about whether they really personally have any. It's looking to me like a "fear of fear itself" situation this time. Personally though, I would have been fine with each site having its own login/password.. and think that it would be a more sensible solution in part because the privacy concerns were predictable, even if you're certain that they're unfounded. I only need to login to pouet about once a year, because I keep the cookie.
It's just fucking web authentication, people.

Also I find it interesting that now people are starting to scream/kick/have serious privacy issues, when back then when scene.org announced to open their login system (and thus people's passwords) to other sites _they_ deem trustworthy. So in fact any problem we might have is with the way SceneIDs are currently handled. And interestingly it's exactly OpenID that has got a solution for that. So how about this:

So in fact any problem we might have is with the way SceneIDs are currently handled. And interestingly it's exactly OpenID that has got a solution for that. So how about this:
- Gasman works together with the scene.org staff on transferring the operation of sceneid.net to the scene.org www server and make it an official part of scene.org (as he himself suggested a few posts ago). HTTPS would be a good idea here.
- scene.org shuts down ANY SceneID API access to sites not officially run/endorsed by scene.org itself
- Profit!
This would have the following advantages:
- All SceneID user credentials stay where they belong: At the main scene.org server(s)
- Sites who want to implement SceneID can simply implement OpenID (and then eg. restrict the login to *.sceneid.net URLs if they wish to do so). These sites will never see any user information apart from the sceneid.net URL...
- ... except perhaps when in a later version the user chooses to grant this site further read access via the OpenID extensions. Enter a page on the scene.org main site that people can use to specify what parts of their information will go out (plus managing a whitelist of sites the user chooses to trust) - and suddenly everything is fine.

sceneid.net has all of that already actually, so no need to wait for a later version :-)

That's actually something I wanted to note too. I don't remember anybody asking my opinion about whether I wanted that or not...
And yeah, the proposed solution seems to be pretty good for me.
I just came to think about something releated to this while reading on Slashdot (not just the scene version). You can just kiss any sort of privacy goodbye with OpenID, in fact just using the same handle on two sites are a compromise. Say you write about your inermost sexdreams on one site and on another you give out close to everything about where you live. Big brother gets a boner from such things, perhaps they think you'll become a terrorist later in life. That info will become handy at your 1st Camp X-ray interrogation.

gasman: heh, well it's more of a "connect the dots" unanonymity which is trickier to keep track of if what you write is separated by sites and time. Just a general reflection on my part.
