Hey, Andy Goth here, thanks for watching and thanks even more for feedback!

There were some technical problems due to me developing on a 33MHz computer which ended up being a bazillion times slower than the compo machine. To remedy, I added vsync, even though I had modify other parts of the code to stay within 256 bytes. Another issue is I developed on and targeted a real VGA, which was using a 720x400 video mode outputting to a 4:3 screen. Thus, the pixels are supposed to be 35% taller than they are wide, rather than the square aspect ratio shown in the stream video. I could retool the equations to accommodate square pixels, at the cost of looking way too tall and skinny on the intended target machine, so I guess I'd have to release two versions of the binary to deal with that.

Here is video showing how it looks on my machine. It's much slower there than I'd like, but getting it to work at all was quite a challenge.

See the updates at http://andy.junkdrome.org/devel/starfish and please do comment. The assembly language and comments can be found there, along with the 1.0 version for posterity. I don't currently have access to a DOS machine faster than 33MHz, though this weekend I might. I'll be really curious myself to see how to shows up.

Also, regarding "second" production, this is in fact the first time I made one knowing that's what I was doing. The first one you refer to was in fact me being asked to submit after (minutes after) I'd already developed the program just for fun, not even knowing there was a competition afoot!

The use of textmode with the 2x9 "all bit patterns" font is really inspiring.

Motivational Thumb for your firsty ! Yes, you always need to look at the compo machine spec or use DOSBox where you can adjust the cycle settings.
