Very good demo! Works well in DosBOX 0.74.

Fuck thats great stuff for p133, especially after chatting with Mr.Sex at the BZM :D
Music was cheezey but I guess it fits

Nice voxels! The star wipes are a nice touch, fitting with the music, but slow down to a crawl on my p166mmx.

I'm not impressed by the speed of these routines.

Thumb up for some cool looking effects. Very incoherent pandering "oldskool" design with boing ball crap and a bit too generic music.
rulez added on the 2018-08-05 19:04:54 by break break
Making this with dream team was so much fun. Altough we had some troubles with the differences between compo hardware and our test hardware = that's the main reason for the laggy parts and lack of speed of those routines. We'll release fixed version with hopefully improved performance + win32 build asap (probably during a week) - it's still a hat trick, 3 oldschool wins @ Assembly in a row :)

Great news everybody! Roz promised this was last doskpop demotune for a while, next time something totally different :D
added on the 2018-08-05 19:34:39 by mikron mikron
That's because nobody's really challenging you. Now fair is fair, it'd be a far more attractive challenge if the target CPU was say a 233mhz with MMX. Either that or go back to 486DX2/66, this feels so inbetween.
added on the 2018-08-05 19:35:04 by superplek superplek
That voxel landscape blew my mind how well its used in this demo. The cubemarcher was pretty good but I think there's room for improvement. Really good work with the graphics I just wish the style was more coherent. I usually like roz's music but this wasnt my cup of tea.

I'd rather keep the compo machine as 133mhz pentium, it's a lot more interesting challenge techwise. We have most of our engine done now, so we'll challenge you more in the future for sure, but there's talks of cancelling the oldschool demo compo so maybe we just fight at simulaatio only.

Branch <3 It isn't cube marcher btw, it's distance field. I agree with the style breakdown. Many parts had coder colors and lack of color scheme. As usual, deadline came "as a surprise" as u know it ;) there just was not enough time to adjust everything how they should be. That 1st retropart was kind of filler, but the music in that part required me to go back to the vectorbob / raster era :D Next time something completely different and more coherent & modern, that's a promise. We'll meet again I'm sure of that o7

IMO Revision should add this hardware category to their oldschool compo rules. It's just kinda stupid to put Pentium DOS demo to Real Wild competition. I hope Assembly rethinks their Oldschool cancellation plans.

Wow, I enjoyed that! I love the oldschool music/vibes, must have seen the same voxel landscape in different configurations (I liked the underwater one), and some more good 2d and 3d effects with good music sync.

Just for my reference, did or did this machine not have the MMX instruction set available?

No MMX as it was stated in the oldschool compo specs / rules.

Nice MS-DOS demo even if it was tested on different hardware
rulez added on the 2018-08-07 07:27:23 by Queen_Luna Queen_Luna
OK - now I'll just go off and say it. This is a shell of the former (B). The routines aren't good looking and even for a non-MMX machine at 133 megahertz the voxel landscape looks absolutely terrible. Some effects do look good but are designed in a way that seems more like a pandering take on the past than actually portraying it with dignity and style. Please try harder next year to make something that doesn't besmirch the name I once loved or I'll have to dust my Pentium off and do it myself. I have the routines, I just need to scale down the BPP.
sucks added on the 2018-08-07 12:35:53 by superplek superplek
I kind of have to agree with Plek here. There's actually some good stuff there (I kind of enjoyed the cubemap stuff and the shadebob zoomer and so on), but the framerate is iffy at places and visually it's a bit of a mess. I'm sure it's part of the irreverent demostyle, but some sort of cohesive design definitely would not hurt.
added on the 2018-08-07 12:54:18 by Preacher Preacher
Hmh, kind of OK but somehow all the parts are ruined in one way or the other except the underwater scene is actually quite nice. Everything else is either too slow, too oldschool (amiga ball for extra votes?), has too much step flicker (voxels), badly animated or has ugly colours unfortunately. I guess this was pretty rushed.

I actually like this
rulez added on the 2018-08-07 13:00:14 by Corial Corial
Enjoyable anyway, if quite slow. Tune lacks a bit of ideas/catchiness but a routine performance from roz sounds good enough for me at least :)

and selfvorting still sucks in 2o18 :)
very '98 :) even though performance is very very questionable (but it's easily explainable as demo runs in 32bpp :) and those credits voxels suck, i've found it stiil pretty enjoyable (also great music by roz!!)

It's really not any sort of excuse since nothing in there requires 32bpp.

except for that cheezy horizontal blur (as doing it in 8bpp would turn picture into rotten-colored mess :)

Which in turn doesn't require 32bpp, you're welcome to explain me why since I've written a few.

Hey Mikron, here's an offer: next year you can let me and sh0ck code your demo so Mr. Sex doesn't have to take sleep medication at night after this debacle, in light of what (B) once was: one of my absolute favourites.
added on the 2018-08-07 14:08:03 by superplek superplek
L O L Why don't you make your own demo instead :D

For Assembly I mean ofc.
added on the 2018-08-07 15:15:29 by mikron mikron
I kinda agree with plek but... to be real here, (B) is still the party that actually made a demo =)

This is aesthetically quite a mess, but a couple of the effects were pretty, like the voxels, meta-objects, and the underwater part (which i guess was also voxels)
added on the 2018-08-07 15:18:46 by noby noby
My heart wants the (B) brand to look better than this. But if you first need to experience shattering defeat in order to come to your senses, then sure, you're on for next year's oldschool competition. Oh, I won't come alone.

I certainly do like the look of those new 3D effects and the underwater part, but the music is really grinding down on me after hearing similar stuff for so many times :(

Plek's comments though were worth it and goes to show that there's room for trash talk in 2018, surprisingly.

I'll thumb up the next one but you got to promise to try to reinvent yourselves in some other fashion. Another platform perhaps? More video stuff? Come on, keeping doing the same thing in a prettier package is a way to be stale and forget to evolve.

Here's a voxel effect I did in 1999 (I was 15 then) without any MMX on a P166, with interpolation. But it's really not about coolest in the world here, I was just disappointed and offered Mikron some help in restoring the brand. That is all, my critique was just honest.

Maybe try something similar to x14 next? That kinda stuff is a) marvellous and b) runs perfectly on older machines (486dx33 for example). Following some graphic design -channels on vimeo/behance/pinterest/.* could help - as a reference ;)

Mazor, you first, time for a Paragon comeback. :)

I enjoyed it, they enjoyed making it. Hit 1998 on the mark pretty well. Could it have been more dramatic or artistic, sure, but sometimes we can just let oldschool be oldschool.

I liked the voxel parts. Some coder colors here and there. The music was really good too, vibes from 1995-2000 demomusic style. But where's the Glenz? :D

Anyway, the main thing is that they enjoyed making of this demo. Semi-seriously but for fun. Plek.

Glentz was in the table but it was dropped :D

Yep usually it's a huge pain in the arse (like our slogan) crunching at least something together in less than a week before the party. This time we had about 2 weeks (gasp!) and Mr.Sex back in the game, so this time it was actually fund (most of the time) and we uploaded compo version 3 hours before deadline, which was world first for us :D Overall the whole experience was more relaxed than ever.

I must admit that I'm at least partly guilty of repeating the oldskool demo vibe pattern with this demo. Mikron did ask me to do totally different kind of a track already in the end of 2017. Due to a certain game project I'm involved in I simply didn't have time / energy / motivation to start a completely new track from zero. So I dug this highly demoish song from my drawer of more-or-less-unfinished songs and turbo boosted it to the max. Anyway I'm pretty pleased with the results and as Mikron already said, something completely else next time!

Not one but two selfthumbs! Impressive. Lemme deliver the compensatory thumb down real quick... :p

The demo itself was enjoyable, but felt empty and uninspired at times. They might have been good technically, but not really interesting; thankfully, a tight soundtrack tied it together sufficiently well so that it didn't fall apart.
