Unfortunately the intro was not shown completely during the compo; it got cut off after about a third of its intended duration, completely destroying the concept. :(

4k ROM, no compression, 128 bytes of RAM, no framebuffer.

Perfect! Finally! A 4k for 2600 that ACTUALLY uses that size well and a great demo! Even looping through the same effects didn't bother me at all because it all works well for the flow of the demo.

I hope this is a wakeup call for all the 32k demomakers that having a limit is actually a good thing that forces creative thinking when you can't just put everything into assets and data.

Direction and an actual message in a VCS prod?

Nice, a return of 4k concept demos. Reminds me of Saigon.

Good use of RESMPx on the lightning part :) It could also benefit from hiding the HMOVE bars with the playfield or via HMOVE on every line (perhaps difficult with a variable-length kernel)
Quote:
The tunnel is displayed using a mirrored playfield where the right side
gets updated at the only cycle where this is possible (45)

This will unfortunately work differently on Stella compared to a real machine, see Call Now. But the difference is probably not very noticeable in this case

Nice Atari demo! It's amazing what you can do in this old platform.

Very nice concept ! That's refreshing to see that awesome demos can still be done on that platform (and how much we have to improve ; ) Thks for your prod !

Much, Much, MUCH! better than what people saw at the compo. Really a shame what happend to you there. The abolutely(!!!) should have replayed it

BTW: The update to PF2 has to END at cycle 48 (45 is probably where it START, correct?) And that update works just perfect on hardware too.

I usually note the current cycle before an important instruction in my comments in the source, so yes, 45 start, 48 end.

And good to see confirmation that it works on real hardware. It looked good on my A2600jr, but Tjoppen seemed to have had problems with this in the past.

I get there's a concept here, but this demo is still rather repetitive, visually and aurally. I, personally, am not a big fan of long things if they rehash themselves a lot. If I had to guess, they probably cut it short because they thought the same or that it was looping. Perhaps a miscommunication between the recording team and the beam team.

Nope, it had been a genuine mistake on their part (which can happen of course). And they had shown some veeeery looooong scrollers in the same compo before. :)

Why didn't they give it a 2nd, complete run?

Oldschool entries get pre-recorded (and the recording itself was cut off too early), so an immediate rerun wouldn't have been possible. And after that compo block the party was basically over.

Such things can (and will) happen from time to time, no ill will was involved, so I can live with that.

Still quite frustrating.

Will you insist on a pre-recording review next time? :)

I don't get it, but nice for a 4k on VCS

Surelay a performance for the platform, but I do not really like the direction

awesome prod and concept.
Is it true what I heard about data / code overlap ? (data used as data and code ???!!!)

Very impressive, and with a meaning. Excellent prod.

Very good prod. I love the Atari2600 and i get mine in the year 1983. When such a demo in this time would have been published on the 2600, everybody have been totally flashed and could not believe it`s real.

The most amazing Atari 2600 demo I've seen since the Trilobit heydays, and also fittingly enough it's 4 kilobytes too. Still a bit of a mishmash maybe, although I might not be reading everything correctly, but at least everything looks excellent, especially considering the platform. The music makes this for me though. The dissonance is absolutely perfect and I in particular love the slow tempo in the start.

Very interesting, anc pleasant to watch. I bet a lot of effort was put into...
But... Sorry, the repetitive idea is not a good one... It makes the demo less interesting.
And.... Wrong copy-party? ;)
