Very very very much unfinished compoversion. Because unfortunate deadlines (thursday 12:00) we didn't have time to polish & fix some issues and we had to make design shortcuts here and there. Still we're happy for the 1st position. We try to make haste and release final and polished version for the Byterapers 30th Anniversary Party next month. Dead inside as usual.

Err what? :) Too bad you didn't make it to the compo. Same goes for Branch :( There was many nice entries in the compo and overall quality was awesome. Few more prods would be still welcome ;) Hopefully next year rules will be similar and deadlines less nazi.

Tip for running in dosbox: Use machine=svga_et4000, core=auto, cputype=pentium_slow, cycles=133000 and enable GUS.

Pretty sweet! Saving my thumb for the final version. :-)

Good stuff. Some very nice looking effects, especially the voxel landscape and the greetings part. Not quite the first (or third) time I saw that water surface effect though :) Good music and gfx too. Extra points for not including any boing ball / tac-2 / amigaaaa nostalgia bullshit this time.

This looks really great. Title screen rocks.

Clearly a lot of effort went into this one. Nice demo.

FWIW, I got pretty close to the compo machine's performance with Dosbox settings cycles=65000, cputype=pentium_slow, machine=svga_et4000
The compo PC had Pentium 133 (without MMX), Tseng ET6000, GUS etc.

No matter what I do i got this from DosBOX :

DOS/32A warning (9003): real mode interrupt vector has been modified: INT 08h

Any suggestions ?

Very good!

@Tigrou. I stopped having this message when I set:
xms=false
ems=false

Then I would have another problem on loading. But realized it needs more memory. I had 32, I set it to 64, it worked.

Meanwhile I put the settings Mikron mentioned, enabled GUS and disabled SB just to be sure, not sure if you also need these.

Anyway, the demo is really well presented, it's great to see such a DOS demo in the compo, with some cool 3d to present credits and greets, and more stuff all well put.

this does not look good, not even for p133 (and yeah I was around releasing back then) - could someone have had a once over on the colors for starters?

Would have been forgettable in the DOS era.

Excellent voxel scene. Overall nice demo, but some of the scenes have a bit ugly colors and the scenes are very disconnected. Looking forward for the next byterapers demo.

Excellent voxel scene? It's as imprecise and unfiltered as can be. Give a kid a Watcom compiler and a Vulture tutorial and...

Hey remember (or notice) that you can submit your remote entry for the Byterapers 30th Anniversary Party compos :)

So if u have some leftover effects from Assembly or your production didn't make it to the big screen, this is as good place as any for release!

I think I liked the colors (but yeah, that's the colors I like) and yes the voxel is blocky but mountains are high and I like it enough (also seems to be recycled from older demo). The stylish breaking greets and final credits 3d made it for me, it's a bit more designed than a generic object show DOS demo of the time.

What is a Vulture tutorial?

best byterapers demo since hyperventilation. some polishing missing from the demo but anyway solid work!

I wonder how many of those effects where not part of the decades old dsd/(b) code base, or uninspired recoded versions; it all looks like seen before and better, especially that very unconvincing water submersion effect does not look good at all.

Few effects were coded for our Payback demo which was unrealased, so we recycled those. Another few effects are recycled from Simulaatio 2015 demo Relax ants (and tuned up since that was 486 demo and this is Pentium). Most of the stuff is freshly created. And no, we dont' have access to Suckhos codebase, so there's nothing code straightlyh copied from that era. So the only demos before this which have had some common pieces of code are Renaissance (scripting & timing engine), Vanility (water) and Relax ants (that polyblend effect after countdown + part of the "blackhole machine", that 3D object with sphere inside)

Tidbit: this demo was mostly created backwards, from the end towards the beginning. The credits part and spliced vectors with radial blur were 1st.

Despite the clear lack of polish I saw plenty of things to like here. I'll withhold judgement until the final, though.

the utter brainfart of the asmorg to consider early pentium tech as oldskool aside (yes, i know of the pouet thread), i don't really see any effects that truly require pentium horsepower over let's say a 486/66mhz. but yeah, best in its compo nevertheless. piggy!
20 years is old enough to be called oldskool.

Lots of recycling from demos over the years, obviously released in a very unfinished state, still quite good. Excellent music, especially love the landscape part. The last effect is quite special too - not necessarily technically, but designwise it's something new.
