Rocks! Code blows my mind and music is also good. Need to run it on my Falcon today:)

The video is captured from an emulator, does the demo run like this on a 030 Falcon?
@exocet just run it on F030 with VGA monitor and it works fines here on real hardware
Really impressive then to see realtime raytracing on a 030 Falcon :)
Beautiful scenes and music. Nice to see the animation from Phenomena's Enigma in there too.

This is indeed crazy Mr. Little.
I was curious whether this was realtime and then I read the nfo file. I can see how it works, that few pixels are calculated per frame and objects moves slowly. Blows my mind. And the visuals and music is great on it's own. I love the RGB leds :)
nice
If this run with the same speed on F030 that can be seen in the YT capture it's really nice code indeed. Good looking scenes and nice music too.
omg, realtime sphere tracing on atari. Jaw dropped!
Wooooooh the demo on Falcon030 coming from nowhere..... Amazing... and great soundtrack. As Virgill said, jaw dropped!
Heahhh Doug ! You rocks one more.
So when will we be able to see the same effects on a standard A1200 ? Ouarfff lol !

This is huh... wow... A good example of a demo that stands well on its own purely for technical merits.
not able to judge how this prod pushes the falcon hardware but I do recognize a good show when I see one.
Hell yeah!
Hell yeah!
Just look at this wonderful piece of code on my Falcon 030... WOW ! Thank you !!!
wow this is amazing.
:U
Not bad. :P
wow! \o/
Now that's what I call a tech demo! Maybe a bit longwinded but the visuals are still great and the music has a good vibe.
Blasting effects for a 64k code binary, thanks to massive DSP magic by DML, mixed with really cool display methods.
Music is brightly sweet, always a delight to hear a XiA composition in this style!
And the overall design with music/visual synch is really nice.

awesome ♥ :)
cool!
What can I say... outstanding and how fun it was to see a Falcon demo in the competition! Made my day!
Amazing.
Why did it place as n/a btw?

nice hexagonal chunky modes!
awesome!
I'm credited in this demo but my involvement was limited enough that I feel confident to give the thumb up for this monumental Falcon demo :)
Pure awesomeness. (And the final proof that nature indeed suxx)
It does drag on a bit.. but this is excellent nonetheless
I didn't really like some of the weird patterns, but the colors were really nice.
not my cup of tea

You can trust Doug on the code! Rules indeed!

It rulez, as always with DML. Next step is mandelbulb realtime !
While I guess there is still confusion as to whether the youtube capture actually shows the accurate framerate of a standard 16MHz Falcon, but seeing that dml coded it I think it is plausible! :)
I am guessing the DSP is doing quite a bit of work here, and then there is the FPU, which I'm not all that familiar with. How fast is it clocked? And was it a common addon for Falcons, or is it a super-rare expensive thing that only a few had?

Terence Mckenna!
Technically good, but aesthetically not my cup of tea and the direction and pace were boring as well. Weak thumb up for the tech show-off.
That's very impressive.
Like with any deom XiA touches, this just has something really special about it. I love the music and the visuals, like watching a PC shader demo in low-rez.
With DML, everything who seemed impossible on a 1992 computer becomes possible, amazing!
An accelerator board are useless with him :D
Real time Raytracing on a standard Falcon is almost witchcraft =)
Read the nfo is as impressive as watching the demo !!!
I also like the design (fractal / enigma transition), the discrete electron beam that passes from time to time, the simulated CRT (curvature), etc.
The music is also excellent.
Congratulations, a milestone in the oldschool computers demoscene!

@Sdw:
A FPU is very common on Falcon for two reasons:
First, there is a socket for this co-processor on the motherboard (as opposed to STF/E or Amiga 500/1200).
Second, the shops sold the Falcon with this copro (without breaking the warranty) for only 63€ more (300FF), cheaper than a game!
Example of advertising in 1993: http://tinyurl.com/z5nxs5m
68882 is clocked only at 16MHz.

Adding to what Xerus said, I guess it makes sense to note that the benefits of the FPU are not very great on Atari Falcon for the purpose of making demos (so far, and including this demo- rumours say this may still change in the future). There has been a bunch of prods that used the FPU, mainly back in the 90s. Since then, coders found just as fast or quicker techniques that don't require the FPU, and so releases that require a FPU became a rarity upto the point that the STNICCC compo team didn't prepare for such a release at all until we became aware of DML's entry.
Ossom!!!
wow...i was very impressed, watching that at STniccc 2105 ... since my daily job is 3D and realtime CPU previews for renderings are still relative new in hightech genre ...can´t believe what you guys doing with a Falcon =)
Not bad!
Ace! The phenomena hommage is cool! <3
Like Daniel said ! Good work guys !
Very, *very* impressive
What urs said!
good stuff...
first time i saw the preview pic i though oh noes not that animation again... ;)

Interesting rendering. Looks good!
Pulled out all the stops.
Absolutely incredible on stock F30...*hint* just youtube dml's F30 quake engine , its even incredible than this...pure fucking arma....DSP'ddon :D
Amazing
A bit mixed about this one.
my god
nice stuff
Impressive!
what?
Find a real dezigner!

Trollman is back !
Seriously I loved it at STNICCC and need to check the video again. Loved the soundtrack as always with XiA. A very very nice prod indeed ! Hats up !

I wouldn't take it personally, it looks like he's a complete tool with everyone's productions :-)
We have pixels, which are bigger than your pixels! ;-)
It's great!

That was nice

Just great!
Speechless! Falcon to the max. Well, seeing DML back on Falcon demos is a bit surreal to me. I love the tech-spirit of this prod, just as I did with the Falcon Doug Little Falcon demo screens and tools back in the 90s when I was a school kid. There is some special spirit about Doug Little prods, like demoscene-concentrate. Nicely pushing music, too.
WOW!!!
Probably the most impressive demo that I saw on all oldschool computers !
Real time smoothing Ray Tracing without acceleration card... it's amazing!
This is the first time I see a demo of oldschool computer with Self-shadowing, ambient occlusion, CSG effects, surface displacements, etc ...
And the music is top notch too!
Douglas is a superior human! I'm speechless!
This is THE Demo 2015!

Incredible. Just plain incredible. Had to watch it three times to actually believe it.
No, i take that back.
I still don't believe it.

Is there an emulator that runs this demo with 030+FPU?
The only Falcon emulator right now is HATARI (try hatari_falcon.exe)... haven't tried the demo with it yet.
This is really, really cool! Great design & code, looks like nothing else on the Falcon I've seen. Lovely upbeat music track makes for a really happy atmosphere. Can't help but smile when watching this. NICE job guys.
Wow!!
Great
Oh ffs
Is this the most modern oldschool demo?
This must be one of the most underrated, if not THE most underrated falcon production that is out here.
The ease with which the technical excellence is presented, together with the notion that this runs on a stock falcon (4mb memory, of which 2 is used by the mp2) hides the fact that all this is calculated in real time.
Hats off sirs!

How did I forget to thumb this? Pure awesomeness :)

No need for long sentences : this just rules !! :)
DSP raiskaajat joutas linnaan, perkele :D
yes
Astonishing code by dml. As always. :)
Nice Atari Falcon textmode demo with code by dml and music by XiA
and guess the name is a reference to the 030 processor ?

Having touched the water a bit coding the Falcon, makes me realize this production is truely a state of the art c0derpr0n production. And as such, it should have a little extra love from us sceners!
Impressive!
Would be very interesting to read a making of, like what is calculated with the DSP, what with the FPU and so on. Stunning stuff!
I don't like the decision to "pixellate" a lot of the effects with oversize "phosphor dot" pixels in a hexagonal pattern, nor that CRT curvature with even more phosphor dots. Why? It hides whatever the programmers were intending and is annoying. The bits where the raytracing effects are shown in large pixels, clearly, are so much better.
However, the presentation is good, the music is nice and jaunty, and the homage to Enigma is perfect!

How come we never saw something similar again ?
great demo!
Soundtrack download link, please? Can't open track.s16 file
amazing work for the one machine i couldnt get my hands on in time . i cant even find a decent emulator, hatari lags and theres no mister fpga core and real machines cost like in the thousands ...
what a shame this thing didnt make it further past the onslaught of pc
