Didn't know how to link a youtube video, and well... don't be bad, it is not the best demo ever...

for youtube there's a "submit changes" window just above the comment box
also, please replace the download link with something more permanent than a dropbox link!

Well, that is a very... let's say "abstract" remake... The effects barely reflect the original ones.
Thanks just trying.
Yes, it looks very.. simple, i told you :).

I'll replace the link.

Thanks for changing the title, it is just what i wanted.

It will be difficult to find a permanent link... Thanks anyway

Thumbs up for Game Boy and learning! :D

Very crude remake, but hey, it's for GBC. Kudos for code and all the effort!

Not bad so far.
Try to make the final scene.
thmb up for the platform.

Looks unfinished, but the idea was good
rulez added on the 2014-04-27 08:15:19 by Manwe Manwe
This could have looked *much* better, especially since a lot of the original effects are achievable on the Game Boy, but I'll thumb it up for the effort. I hope to see an improved final version!

Sorry, but that was terrible

I still enjoyed some parts of it even if it doesn't do justice to the original.

That's *extreme* bravery for a choice of first prod!

Saw this a while ago already and I'm with britelite on this one. I won't thumb it down though as it is a first production. But it still is bad, slow code, quite bad/half-assed remakes of the parts and the list goes on and on.

Piggie, because everyone starts somewhere and the choice of platform is at least good! :D

The GBC can do a lot better.

Learning is always good, but next time consider doing your own stuff :) It's a lot more interesting.

I have to explain more things about this.

I could have made the rotozoom effect and the rotating lines, and the distosion buble thing, and the 3D scene at the end...

But they would have been just a bunch of looping bkg's, at very low resolution, Or a "video" at 6 FPS (on CGB) in a very big ROM.

So i decided to make the "real" thing: rotating just two boxes and scaling the face for example.

Thanks anyway, I don't think i'll work on this.
added on the 2014-04-27 13:32:29 by Mills Mills
Have you seen the c64 remake? They too fake a lot (the animated city scene in particular), but it's not like you have to resort to "video" for each and every effect. The GBC (at least on a specs sheet) looks too powerful for that.
added on the 2014-04-27 13:42:13 by tomaes tomaes
Yeah, I saw the c64 faking a lot of the scenes, i think the rotozoom and the circles scenes are also a "video".

Well I may try and do a better demo by faking some effects, But then, it won't work on the DMG. This demo was made for both, so i did not use any CGB special feature.
added on the 2014-04-27 13:49:30 by Mills Mills
What the.. I'll do it :). Sorry for the DMG, it will be left behind, But i'll do a better version using CGB features, it deserves a better demo, I did not like this very much, it looks like unfinished. I promise a second version.

Take your time about it and re-create it faithfully. With some polishing it could be a great GBC conversion.
added on the 2014-04-27 15:35:50 by raer raer
Yep, maybe with some more optimized z80 assembly. You say it was code in pure C, which is still cool for some of the parts.
added on the 2014-04-27 15:40:33 by Optimus Optimus
I understand this is your first prod, and that considered, it's not so terrible.

But overall, this just feels really unfinished, plus it's a terrible attempt at remaking Second Reality.

Would have been a thumb for a firsty, downgraded to piggy for bad remake.

C on GBC.. what do you expect?
This just deserves thumb-down, being a firstie or not.

See above comments. Motivational piggie.

This was brave, and a bit silly like lsl said, but it shows potential. Looking forward to your next prods.

I'm using a lot of C on my Oric prods :)
(and a lot of assembler too)

But yeah, I had in my plans (for more than 10 years) to make an Oric port of Second Reality, and it's kind of a shame to just release a hacked up version like that, specially considering that some of the effects are quite ok and there is some music.

You are also not obliged to do the full version alone, I'm sure you can find some other gameboy people who would be willing to help, possibly making better graphic conversions, etc...

You are right oerg866. But I have to say, nobody helped mi a lot when i told i was using c... They say it is too slow. I nearly got scanline effects, (moving SCX line by line), to work with no glitches just in C, i simply did not work enough on them.

This is just fun, by the way, to make some cool effects i would need a program called "gameboy image quantizer" also called "gameboy color tiler", It seems to have vanished from the internet :(.

Thumb to keep you going and code something in assembler and using what the GB has to offer.

Don't code in C for 8 bit systems.

Motivational thumb for a not so bad firstie. When you choose an all-time-greatest as template, you sure excel either in technics or in fun. In fact I laughed out loud when I saw the "port" of the city scape ending scene. That's true GB spirit to me. If you had chosen the same approach for all scenes this would be a really cute thing.
rulez added on the 2014-04-28 22:38:52 by JAC! JAC!
That's it JAC. At least someone LOL with this :). I wanted to make a 3D scene, or a 4 color video, do you think a video will be ok to show the 3D city?.

I finally did not make "videos" because i wanted this to work on original gameboy, and a video looks too slow on it.

use asm next time or no more thumb :)
rulez added on the 2014-04-29 22:52:26 by Oswald Oswald
Props for the effort, especially for a firstie. Frankly this doesn't leave a very good impression, it looks like you punched a bit above your weight trying to remake/remix those scenes :). I'm sure that an original production - even a relatively simple one - would have resulted in something a bit more admirable. Let's see that next time :).

Expectations are just way too high with "Second Reality" in the title...
added on the 2014-05-01 14:28:43 by hfr hfr
First off, thumbing down for not using asm is just absurd! Honestly, who the fuck cares which tools you use; most of oldschool coding is dataset processing and the actual implementation is pretty boilerplate anyways.. at least that's how it is for me and most of my favorite oldschool coders ;D

Good effort man; the result feels pretty wonky but some of it is really charming and I look forward to seeing more stuff from you in the future.. especially with "non-standard" and unique workflows :)

Well, have a motiovational pig! (instead of the thumbdown for you shouldn´t have released it in this state!)
Maybe find a second gameboy-coder to work on the effects, transitions,etc.,etc. and release a 100% someday...or not, just keep it as a learning-prod and go over to something new! ;)
Always remember: The Demoscene is not about the number of thumbs but about the fun of being creative (with code)...and i bet you had lots of fun developing this! Some of the effects were quite cool already, go on like this and you´ll get more good votes next time! ;)
Thanks everybody. I'm making this a bit less ugly. Stiill in C but adding some asm code. i need to learn a wave effect moving SCX reg, and i will fake some effects to look better. Maybe i'll add a video at the end and a hicolor image. It will be just for game boy color .
added on the 2014-05-08 12:32:07 by Mills Mills
If you really want to make an improved version, reconsider finding someone to help you...you can only teach eachother getting a better (gameboy-)coder...nothing to lose! Gaining knowledge and speeding up the work this way, motivating eachother by just making progress! Also coding in a team is double the fun! ;)
Once you got into assembler you´ll want to recreate your existing effects in asm anyway, believe me...so much faster!
Nice! I like it, and +1 because platform.

I must admit that almost every Second Reality clone on 8bit platform sucks. It is just only my opinion: effects suck as you know how it looks in original. Music sucks as you remember the original masterpiece soundtrack. But nevertheless, I understand there is lot of work and effort spent to do a non-perfect copy on 8bitter.

Kinda divided...
Firstly - not a good choice for a first demo. From the other hand, I see you are/were ambitious.
Would have been better if it had been done in ASM with more polished way, but well... Next time, perhaps?
Will give you my personal thumb for a motivation and ambition.
Be well.

Haters gonna hate, but liked it, especially the idea of contracting the vector's colors with the b&w bgs.
