My favorite from the compo. Love the visuals and music. I know what the colors are going towards (Mondrien, de stijl etc...), but a bit if desaturation or a tint would've made them better. Still, ace.

An animated Piet Mondrian painting in 3D. I can dig it.

Direction is a bit lackluster though. There's no tension, just the lazy change-cam-by-beat synching.
rulez added on the 2013-08-19 07:17:24 by tomaes tomaes
The lack of development/tension in both music and visuals is not really my cup of tea.

That said, I really love this. Extremely well put together, and you can tell that lots of love went into this. Should have won :)

The pace in the animation and the way the sync has been done, seems wrong combined with the music. I adore the music, it has loads of possibilities for a demo, but in my opinion, this doesn't work.

Lovely, but ugly as hell.

Reminded me of those awful commercials from the late 80's or early 90's with the Stu-stu-stu-studio line...

Funky music, nice direction and flow, but colors ruined everything - and for that reason alone I'm not watching it again :(

But colors are not enough to piggie this. So thumbie it is :)

Absolutely massive - the only thing that kinda took away from the experience is that the sync seemed slightly off.

Whoa, traction 2010++ !!

For me, this is a very well but executed but strongly different than usual effect demo. At the same time it is a perfect trip to the world of constrained colors (very much nothing wrong with the colors of this demo for me) and very fancy'n'cool animations. Big thanks for bringing us such a quality magic effects show combined with good music and sync!

I liked what can be best described as "primary color lego brick snake" near the end but a lot of people seem to be really confused about Mondriaan and De Stijl in general. This would be a terrible homage to that and I doubt that's what it is.

It needs more of those!

Oh, and finally a modern demo running at full resolution (1920x1200) and 8x multisampling on my laptop. :) Well okay, it's not technically demanding, but people still manage to make stuff like this to be slow, so kudos for that. :)
Quote:

I'm actually more confused about all the Lego associations, while the link to Mondria[a]n's grid compositions (+ hints of recursion / "sparse texel tree" look) is not exactly subtle and makes more sense to me.
added on the 2013-08-21 08:58:36 by tomaes tomaes
Okay, so I thought I'd pop in to offer some thoughts.

First of all, this demo is not really a tribute to Mondrian per se, the idea was to make a modernist demo with a minimal aesthetic and some form of music with a really repetitive beat. The cube thing is an obvious reference of course, as is the colorscheme somewhat, but aside from that, nothing else is a consciously taken from anywhere. I had two more Mondrianish effects lined up but they were dropped quite early and may appear somewhere in the future. I also had something akin to Malevich's suprematist works that was also dropped. As for other sources of inspiration, the scene with the circles comes from last year's Evoke logo and the original idea for the part with the hexagons is from a poster advertising a Finnish club, though it's quite different from what it was in the beginning.

Secondly, the colors. I realized that going with pure colors instead of tinted ones would be a kind of a hit-or-miss thing, but the simplicity appealed to me, as well as some kind of a "purity" in striving towards the most basic forms and shapes. The constructing sphere has tinted colors though, because the pure yellow didn't look good when alphablended with the others. On my laptop that I wrote this on it looks good to my eyes and it looked good on the big screen, which is the important thing. On my work computer it's a bit too bright.

Thirdly, the direction. I understand that it might not appeal to everyone as it is indeed quite repetitive without much tension. That's also intentional, though every scene does have some subtle development. I wanted to have a kind of a VJ'ish aesthetic that runs with the steady beat and building tension didn't work well with that in my mind. A matter of taste, I guess. I also thought about dropping a few more scenes and then just running each of them for a minute with more development, but I didn't want to drop any of these so I didn't experiment much with that.

Overall, I am really happy how the demo turned out and about the response to it. I've spent more time on this one than most of my works and I think it really shows. It's definitely one of my favorite demos of the ones that I've done, and the growing building thing is in my opinion the finest single effect from me ever.
added on the 2013-08-21 10:22:58 by Preacher Preacher
First of all, i love the Deephouse track - no matter what.

It could have been perfect and spot on if it had a more predictable pace or direction. The change between fast syncs and slower scenes isn't really reflected, especially since the track has a easy mood to it.

Anyway. Thumb up-worthy production!
rulez added on the 2013-08-21 11:39:22 by rp rp
This is one of those demos that I nearly absolutely love but something just doesn't sit right for me.

Love the music. Love the style. Love the scenes. Some great sync and scene development in there. But.. sorry.. that camera work really tired me out. I liked the sync in the spheres + triangles scene (first pic in the screenshot above) more. By the time the greets came I was ready for the break.

First things first, I find it brave that you went with this colour scheme - and as you stated it'd be a hit or miss. And the beautiful thing is that you some how manage to not let them look like coder colours at all, it just feels clean - and I can't imagine other colours to fit better. Though in the ball scene I saw some nice one in the back :)

This tune just sticks in my eardrums since Evoke, it's so calm yet so pushing forward - I feel like I could loop it all day and it'd not get boring. Of course it matches well with the visuals and the sync, which I find rather tastefully holding back - like in the "not totally filled cube" with the small rectangles on it's sides.

I love a lot of parts, the first one with the spinning rings, the circle/icosahedron(?), the stacking building (actually the part where it has no colours yet) and the line parts at the end. Also love how I watch your demos and always learn something, like the camera movement this time that planes should have depth (yours have) and much more.

Keep it up, I'd give it a CDC if only they'd not be so rare :\

Also, 10 MB? Really? This should have fit in 1 MB and even less, given the precedents set by Farbrausch and Co.

cngsoft: With a few modifications, the code itself could probably pretty snugly fit in 64k and then there's stuff like the image library and GLEW that's not really used for much here. If you want, I can give you the source and you can spend the time and effort to strip out all that stuff for no artistic merit whatsoever and come up with someone that would use a crappy 64k synth instead of his or her favorite tools to compose the soundtrack. Personally, I don't care one inch.

I like the concept and the effects, but the camera beat-sync in the middle was too nervous for me. The music's nice, but could have been used for more creative syncing (more than camera paths). Also better transitions between the effects would have been nice, because atm it feels like a bunch of disconnected effects with the same color scheme...
