>>> Silly Things (fixed) <<<

After 21 years of demo coding, I finally managed to enter a demo compo.
This one was created for Silly Venture 2010 in Gdansk.
The demo requires an Atari 800 alike computer with PAL GTIA and 64k RAM.
No extended memory is required - so I ended up with 43 bytes left ;-)
Thanks to 505 and OOZ for their contributions!
Silly Effects included:

    - Silly Blur DYCP with 8 shades, running full screen on 50 FPS.
    - Silly Logo in 16 shades animated during loading.
    - Silly Textures morphing and spinning at 50 FPS.
    - Silly Waves waving and spinning at 50 FPS.
    - Silly Meter based on the volume of the 4 channels spinning at 50 FPS.
    - Silly Scroll with 16x8 pixels and 6x8 font, spinning at 50 FPS.
    - Silly Split vertical hardware graphics split 160x192 pixels at 50 FPS.
    The split is used for the following presentation effects:
    roller, shutter, wiper, striper, rotator, swinger

For more information, see the .nfo file. For those without an Atari, I have also provided a 50 FPS video as download. Streaming will follow, once I know how to do it.

My 130XE is currently packed away, so I had to settle for the video, but I could see that it's a nice demo anyway! :)

Very nice demo ! Clever coding, good design, and awesome tunes (even if the first one stops a little bit suddenly to my taste). I will regret not to have a full fonctionnal Atari 800xl at home :-)

Start could have been paced a little faster ... otherwise it's rock solid. Props for using unexpanded machines :)

Love the presentation and the effects. The dot part was a bit long but anyway it's fine since there are not many other parts after. The split thing doesn't show well on emul, gonna watch the video now.

Very nice demo. I agree with the comments above. The one I think is not so 'nice' is the moment the first music stops. Suddenly it is quiet... and that's it. I think this could have been prettier. But for the rest: excellent demo. I like the dots part very much. Impressive!
rulez added on the 2010-12-14 09:39:19 by Marius1976 Marius1976
WOW! Thanks for all that positive comments. I'll provide a fix for the issues above. To be honest, I knew about both things (first ending and pace in dots part), but I simply ran out out time before the deadline. It would have changed to timing of all subsequent parts. I'll provide a 100% version soon.

>>> Silly Things - Fast Mix <<<

As promised I have created a fast mix of the party version. Here's the capped.tv.
It contains all the things I could not change before the deadline. It is the 100% version as it has even smoother effects and faster pace. The intro part sync has been reworked and the sound is now fading as it should before the loading of the main part starts. The main part with the dots effects is now much faster and smoother. The sync up to the scroller is almost identical but has more transitions. The main sync becomes faster starting with the scroller. The overall speedup is about 31 seconds and that is the maximum I could active without breaking the sync. I hope you like it.

I have put the party version, the fixed party version and the fast mix into the download archive.

BB Image

And because it is exactly 15 years to the day I also added "JacField-1995.xex" to the archive. It is the original implementation of the dot field which started in 1993 and which would have been released in Poland 1995 - but never was... The routine did not yet double buffer correctly and there was only enough raster time left for a very simple tune and a single animated pixel. It took 15 years before the tune turned into 505's tune and before the single animated pixel became 256 animated pixels at 50 FPS.

My favourite demo for little Atari. And it works on standard 800XL, unlike most modern prods, which require tons of RAM and VBXE.
