The texturing and overlays make it look like a 2000-era demo on my ATI machine, but the screenshot looks much better, so I guess I'll wait for the video too.

Quite a big contrast between the quality of the visuals, some look astonishing while some are just putrid to look at, which usuallt is a big turn-off for me. But, most of it looked really good, and the direction was spot-on.

For direction and music, though this could've done with a bit more polish here and there. The punchline at the end was awesome.

im not the greatest fan of such "braggin" music i have to admit.
visuals did not always work out as they could have in some moments (warptunnel/stars..)
punchline at the end was super and made me laugh.

I really liked the feeling of alien technology and especially the pacing of this demo. For me this is perhaps the best demo design by visualice ever.

Wow. How long is this? :O
Very diverse scenes, nice soundtrack. It probably looks great on reverse as well! But it's diversity hurts it somehow as some visuals seem inconsistent.

now i wanna play ufo: enemy unknown :p

overall another massive fr-release, the music serves the gfx well. also it fits the space-theme of the party perfectly. the last screen in the arcade reminds me of TRON :)

critics?
well, some models look a bit 10-years-ago and unpolished, some scenes are a little slow-paced (but hey, its visualice).

I found it unbelievably boring and wouldn't throw a coin into that arcade.
I can not say visuals and music are bad, but seriously, this is the same stuff as usual. Try doing something fresh and different for a change...

A lot of effort there, and some parts look good. But it's still an overly long flyby, and the storytelling parts just don't work.

added on the 2010-10-24 19:25:33 by yumeji yumeji
First off let me start with how much I appreciate a demo with a narrative, and even with a "plot twist", even if the latter was a bit music-video-ish.

But I can't help thinking that this demo was just not visually appealing - I couldn't help the feeling that the scenes that are meant to represent something large are crushed by texture stretching and lack of detail, while some scenes often have overly detailed parts which look strange from a distance. The texturing is flat and confusing, and sometimes it's hard to make out what is supposed to be looked at. At one scene I even had to wonder if it rendered properly.

Just compare this to Finally Inside or YouShould, which I believe the genre this demo competes in - Pixtur's demos feature huge structures, but with a distinct contrast between a monolithic background and a focused foreground, while in Aeon5 the two sometimes overwhelm each other in a wrong way, and neither of them are particularly visually appealing because of the aforementioned texture stretching and what I perceived as too bright ambient lighting, while in the Still/HJB demos, the backgrounds are only sparsely textured to make room for the foreground.

I don't know what to make of this demo, because it really could've been a lot better. But I appreciate it for what it is.

Very very nice. Really nice visuals, although even with full multisampling/antialiasing, I got a bit of moire on some of the textures.. weird.

Love the style though. Perhaps a little long :-)

Huge, yes some parts could do with a little tidying up but whatever. Love the soundtrack, the way the graceful parts are brutally shut down with tight sync, and the constant tension and bombast throughout.

A bit too long at times and I really dislike the colour scheme (looks like a typical unreal3 engine game where everything is dull and grey).
It did get a lot better after the long'ish beginning, but still it's a piggie.

Calexico: Install DirectX9, you still need to install it even with vista/win7 that ship with dx10/11.

Watched that thing "at work" today. Really solid. Even tho some of the scenes were a lil long. Minor texture issues and a lil of colorcontrastlessness. It's a good production. Along with the music. Sounded good out of the speakers there.

The beginning reminds me the line of games from Wing Commander to Eve online.
Also, the arcade cabinet at the end looks like an allusion to Wing Commander 2.

I am amazed about the amount of content and I really like the general style / syncing and concept. Most scenes are real jaw-droppers and proof of visualize' genius. However, some scenes don't really fit in and one or two important cuts could have benefit from some color-transitions.

The confusing thing is that you obviously know how to "pimp up a scene in post". Because at 3:47 you suddenly enable the fucking awesome mode. I guess this must be part of the game console concept...

Ah, and I really like the music mastered with sound fx.

Visualice <3

That said, the 'control room' scene was quite poor.. the different parts of the scene (the floor, windows, central thing) didn't seem to connect with each other and looked like separate overlapping objects.

The rest was pretty solid, a few flaws here and there but overall stunning. And the tune is fucking great!

I'm really digging this investigation of unknowable alien life + technology :)

Guys, install the latest DirectX end-user runtime. Fixed the missing dll -problem.

A nice demo, had some really pretty parts and some really ugly ones too. Didn't like the overall colour scheme, too much dark brown and dark green and dark gray mixed up in a big dark mess. The terrain flyover with the massive black particle thing waiting at the end was my favourite part.

The music is v. good except for the gross overuse of slow piano melodies synced with events. I grew really annoyed with it towards the end.

Thank you all for your feedback.

Few clarifications are in order tho: The demo is unpolished yes, simply because I ran out of time. And I also ran out of memory, should've designed things a bit more better in regards of that, but then again it was constant learning of Werkkzeug4 during the process.

Also I would like to point out that no additional sound fx was mixed to the track, everything that is there was there to begin with. I don't care much about adding forcibly such things, but instead let the track dictate the content as it is.

Also I wanted the focus to be on the space, instead of the traditional foreground/center highlighting and this way to depict man's smallness in it. Since well, it played the main lead here anyway.

Thanks Blamstrain for your swift action!

Substrate: Yes, for me one of the most interesting challenges in demomaking is inventing visuals for a track that already exists. Coming up with unusual and creative syncs is also the target of my aim. In regards of this aspect tho, I feel slight scent of failure here.

Strange but beautiful athmosphere for a demo. Halfway through I really felt like in a game that I would love to play and wanted to suggest that you turn this into a Super Stardust like space shooter. And then you end the demo with a zoom out from an arcade machine. Splendid.

Hopefully he'll continue doing music, and such support as Keith has demonstrated here will surely help with that! :)

the code is superb, thanx chaos for the engine !
the music is getting better towards the end getting NiN-style !
but i still HATE your style of demos, artsy-fartsy :p

SCHEISSE! SCHEISSE! SCHEISSE!

Didn't like every part, but I really admire Visu's skills to make a flyby look and feel interesting.

Visuals could be better, but nice anyway. Music is very nice, fits to the visuals, and i love this style very much!
Overall it's like a HJB demo from 2000 with better graphics. I hope we'll see more like this.

too repetitive at the beginning (the huge tunnel)

besides that, it's ok, some good atmosphere etc.

visualice formula: emboss, dots (particularly in grids), stripes, darkness. More resolution? more and smaller dots.

it made my radeon 9600 look good back in the day, and i appreciate the use of the resolution, but i can't help but think that it's ugly now. i don't think it's artsy-fartsy or anything, just a bit past the expiration date. lord forbid that this should be adapted to be bright, upbeat demos.

Potential but the lack of polish hurts.

Things that could be improve:
- less shiny materials (or an adapted 'shine map' on them) so that the 40 years old broken wood wall doesn't seem to be varnished.
- stop centering everything in the center of the screen, even more if what you want to show is the rest of the immensity of the space around it. Your lookAt targets doesn't have to be on the ship (or any animated object) itself. :)
- overall too long. The same quantity of effort (there's a lot in there and it shows!) over less time = better prod. (but yeah that'd need a new edit of the song).

..and what is it what all those neverending tunnel demos? ..I thought it was the year of the fractal!

great epic space trip! and that arcade machine at the end really did it for me. I'm imagining some kind of first person r-type. would be cool if there was some violence or war maybe without giving away the arcade thing? a bit like when the monster in deities suddenly has to battle some kind of enemy in that demo or something. loved the time + planet thing. the credits look marvellous. also i like organic metal or technology. could go on with praise really. great soundtrack!

tech wise I could have liked some supersampled bumpmapping (or whatever is the technique to efficiently eliminate aliasing in bumpmaps nowadays) and perhaps depth of field or other effects/postprocessing to soften the look a bit.

This is what i call a space opera. Stunning visuals, model and texture wise. Well placed effects and a massive soundtrack. I was glued to the screen the whole time. More of this please!

Well... hard to say anything at this point without repeating anybody else, but I really felt this needed better direction (and at least half the overall duration).

I can't help but feel "designed for Full HD" is a huge misnomer here, as it becomes painfully apparent that surfaces are pretty much all flat, muddy, and unnaturally glossy (really, the only thing that distinctly separates it from 2000–2002-era visuals is this omnipresent shader gloss that makes things look plastic instead of organic), and vast majority of the objects are painfully low-polygonal. The obsession with flypasts through haunting tunnels™ left me cold here, as I feel cdak managed it a lot better in 4k and without Trent Reznor on the soundtrack.

In short, it really pains me to realize that, instead of watching your demos and appreciating them as they are, I resort to pondering how much better they could have been. Oh well.

hum... at the party I thought this was pretty boring.. but apparently my demo taste has developed a lot in 2 years. Visualice's design is top notch here, the little details all over the place do it for me.

I was thinking about what demo to add as my 4th CDC, and well... I got reminded of this demo instantly.

I don't know what it is about this demo that makes me come back to it so much, but that's how it is, so for this reason I'm giving it a CDC.
