Supergood & fresh!

For a moment when I started watching the stream I tought it was a realtime version of Cassius's "Sound of Violence" :) (well the woods and the jumpy worms / cubes are there ;)

Awesome

This is my favourite demo of the Assembly...and one of my favourite demos for a long time! I love the flow of this, the way it draws the viewer in and takes him on a ride into the unknown.

Visually it's beautiful, the forest scene was gorgeous and it has a nice retro feeling to it too, which reminded me a little of Space Harrier to begin with.

The design and concept is unique and so well done. Hell I could write an essay praising this demo and I don't have a word of criticism!

Superb!

WORD!

Somehow it was rather "ironic" to watch this after "Wrath" in the demo compo :) - really cool concept. As mentioned, the forest scene ruled, some other parts were a bit too repetetive. Music is nice, but Slyspy has done even better tracks.
Almost sounds like I´m critizising... of course this is a thumb up!

nice tribute to 80s animation and 2001.. and i half expected the king of cosmos from katamari damacy to pop up in the first part. :)

the only thing holding it back from perfection is at the end, where the music begs to return with a drum beat and one more part.

For those that can't get it to run, you might be missing some Microsoft Visual C runtime stuff (7.1), at least that turned out to be the problem for me.

Hint to demomakers - better error messages than just quitting the app, thanks! ;)

A few words about the demo.

It was made with aDDict3, the demotool of Conspiracy. This was the first time I used it, so it was basically a learning project.
Unfortunately, because of this there are lots of bugs in the demo, there was no time to fix them; and there remained even less time to write the music.

I didn't really like the result, it is not exactly what I wanted, so I'm suprised by the overwhelmingly positive reactions, but I'm very happy. :)

I took inspiration from many places, in particular from the already mentioned Cassius music video, the slitscan trip of 2001 space odyssey and the hungarian-french cartoon "Az idő urai".

Ah, and the middle of the music is Bach reversed. :)

I can see how that might be the case, but I honestly dont think this demo is "trying to be" anything. i get the impression its some off-the cuff stream of consciousness type production.

i just think they thought of a lot of ideas and just whacked them together and something magical happened.

I'm probably wrong, the whole thing probably took months of definite and precise designing, but the effect (to me at least) is very freeflowing and natural. if it WAS all carefully crafted than that just makes it all the more brilliant.

great fking prod whatever!

Everything's a rip-off of everything else. Everything that's created has a long tail of influences and past ideas. 90% of all new content is just a recombination of what someone, somewhere made before you and better, so don't get your panties twisted about your holy originality. :)

Hey guys! Come on! We are a remix-generation. And demoscene is about making things just because we can. Just for fun. Nothing serious. It's just a demo with lots of borrowed ideas, but who knows why it worked at the party. That's all. Cassius or Transformers, who gives a fuck?

Rebb: the essence of my "style" is selecting where i steal from ;)
added on the 2009-08-10 15:07:05 by slyspy slyspy
slyspy: That's why i thumbed this down (maybe piggie would have been better choise). It's a rip off, so no points for originality. And talking about ripping stuff; fairlight, orange, cncd did it with style. That's the difference, for me.

BTW, I agree with Slyspy... demos taking inspiration from "pro" works are nothing new, and I believe that none of the creators will claim for an originality award anyway.

We still do this for fun, don't we?

there's a line here. every demo takes inspiration from other sources. you would be naive to think otherwise.
for me the definition of ripping vs inspiration is that ripping adds nothing new - it takes a single source and copies it. inspiration involves adding your own spin, mixing sources and improving on it to produce something new.
if you want to know if a particular case is good or bad, ask yourself: if i had seen the original first, what would i think of this?
added on the 2009-08-10 15:53:27 by smash smash
*cough* transformers */cough*
Smash: For me?
"if i had seen the original first, what would i think of this?"
I didn't see the original first, but after seeing it, i don't see any own spin in this.

maali: damnit, we were trying to keep the transformers reference quiet, it'd ruin it for all the people who thought we were being completely original with the concept of a car turning into a robot.

For those who can't get it to work (Vista x64 here, Intel Q9450, gtx260), downloading the dx9.0c update got me as far as the config menu. After that I still got a "failed to create device" error. It was because I had bumped the refresh up to 60hz (my monitor's refresh rate). After leaving it at 59hz it works brilliantly. As big of a Orange/CNCD/Fairlight fan as I am I thought their demo was pretty weak and this should have been the obvious winner. dx9.0c is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3

Thumb up for the music and the fact that it's a different (style wise) demo, much much needed nowadays. But man, why copy that Cassius vid? Sure you can take the base idea and then evolve it your way, but... why copy even the worms getting in the holes, the big boxes casting shadows and all? I don't get it... and that's plain copying, not "getting inspired by". Shame, shame on you.

Next time get a good gfx guy, make something on your real own, and you'll be my new favourite demogroup.

this demo and the cassius video are so totally not the same thing. golden path is much more LSD-ish.

only idiots waste their time screaming "rip-off".
wise men enjoy the art.

consider this: you are a "rip-off" of all the humans before you. everything that makes up your body has been done before. does this invalidate the orignality and uniqueness of your person?

this was your free zen advice for today. and here's my thumb.

I liked it once, but I woudln't watch it again. I've seen far better infinite zoomers, and that's all this is for me.

On the other hand, it's a great starting point for several things you could do in a SIMILAR vein that I'd love to see someone explore. So don't think I hate it - I just think it could be explored a heck of a lot more, and the hype surrounding it may prevent you from doing that. So - what in*tEr said, really.

This was so refreshing it hurts. While on one hand it felt a bit oldschoolish and dated, it managed to drop my jaw in certain scenes, such as when the cam blasts out in the wide open of the forest. I couldn't help but say "whooaaaaa". The music is so damn hippie-ish that it rules, and it blends greatly into the visuals. I really wanna know what stuff Slyspy was smoking during the making of this prod. Absolutely refreshing , exactlly what the scene needed at this point. Thank you very much for the show, Slyspy and good ol' BoyC.

Just an average psychotrip with a music that broke my trip...

The music was just SCREAMING for a climax like the chemical brothers' "the private psychedelic reel" but alas, can't have everything. This rocked, obviously heavily inspired by the video for cassius' song of violence but it's not simply ripping it off, or if it is it's at least done very very very nicely. More, slyspy, more! (and props to BoyC for making it possible, of course)

Interesting concept, pretty awesome execution, but still I find it somehow not clicking completely for me. I think it's the music, it just does not seem to have the "epic" quality, or maybe it lacks really good buildup and climax for the scene changes .. dunno. Neverthless worth a thumb up or three just for being so different, of course.

Trippy-cool. If a bit of more work had been given to the quality of the 3D objects and scene had been composed as carefully as "the forest". This would have been a killer! Still a thumb up for crazyness and overall flow.

Remember having seen it on the stream back then, and it felt original - despite knowing the Cassius vid. However, it's not comparable - this is done by a bunch of humans in their leisure time, and the other one was paid for.
I like the feeling of this demo, and love the surely Odyssey 2001 inspired tunnel scenes - was pleasantly surprised when the forest came up, for me it really was a "story" twist - and the music and sync is darn well done. I'd love to have this one being loopable though :)
