tigrou, you'll need to install either this or this (didn't bother checking which version it actually needs). you can't just copy the dll file over, it won't accept it - you actually have to run the installer.

I am sorry but this was simply a huge disappointment for me. I watched it with great expectations but well... First of all the transitions aren't as good as the so-called ASD trademark quality :). Secondly, the demo feels dull, it really doesn't have a point, it's not going to anywhere. And finally, the music is not my favourite from ASD.

On the other hand, I loved the volumetric triangle explosions as well as the rendering.

Overall a piggy.

So good it hurts, i'm totally shocked and almost speechless. I could list a million superlatives and it wouldn't be enough. Flawless performance, perfectly balanced and totally seamless. I just love the visuals and a stunning tune as always. I wasn't sure is Lifeforce could be matched but i think you have done it. Worked flawlessly on my ATI 4850.

Watched from HQ YT version I must say: "Demigods from Greece kill Debris". This show was so outstanding, that I wish it never ends. Transition lovers founds their nirvana. Superb scenes and graphic filter or what magic stuff Navis used. What really blows me out was incredible Amusic and Leviathan´s soundtrack.

In fact, you can do very different demos like Iconoclast, Metamorphosis or Size Antimatters but always in godlike quality.

thank you

Just saw the youtube version and I am saving my thumb for when I actually see it running in real-time.

You guys really surprised me! I like the look and the direction (though it's far from the style I was expecting) was very appropriate for its style. The music isn't my cup of tea.

The particle system looks great but again, it suffers from youtube compression. :)

I'd give you more than one thumb if I could, but I'm saving it for the real (-time) deal. :D Rock on!

ah, so I'm back home. What an adventure it has been. First of all, super thanks to everybody at the Gathering: you made my short stay in your beautiful country all the more enjoyable. Kudos to the production team, this year they managed to get more people interested in what we are doing and also run a smooth party.

Then a high-five to my asd friends, I wish you were there (at BP or TG) to share some of the primal excitement we all get when we watch our production on the big screen with our fellow sceners sitting around us. Next time ?

I saw the screenshot from Automan / Galaxy Express 999 and at first I thought that the shaders were playing up. The funny thing is that I know nothing about this, it is a pure coincidence. The demo references other sources, ofcourse: debris is one (the camera shake), and then the films mad max and the duel. But no idea about Galaxy express 999.

So now... I have to live for a few days in a rather melancholic - post natal depression mood, which I'm sure you all get when you finish a big production. But it is all balanced by the reaction and positive reviews, and the knowing that people we'll talk about this for a little longer (or maybe only until tonight hehe :-)))

Agree... Amusic is such a great composer, but almost everybody hates the guitars in his music. Demo like this needs more electronic and less melody (without guitars)

Amusic! keep the guitars and make it the way you like to make it! It works! the music was great in this one too!

Ok it's time to set some things straight. The tunes we make we both colaborate. By this I mean that not I write the guitars as an extra but also the actual track in Reason and tools. It is by all means IMPOSSIBLE to keep everyone happy with the gazillion types and genres of music out there. So firstly we want us (me and amusic) to be happy with what we write. Some will love it and some will hate it. That's life after all isn't it? Not everything comes our way or is a joyride. Further more I must say that I personally refuse to become a pop junky just to get more votes. Metal boils in my veins and that's just the way it is.

I'm not really sure where this wholesale clearance of black turtlenecks and designer glasses took place, but boy, do some of you take this re-heated bowl of leftovers ever so serious.

Trademark quality transitions, soundtrack that kinda falls apart and visuals that are fun up to the point where you realize that particular set of shaders has been used in other ASD demos so much they could get a spin-off sitcom.

Stop with the idolizing already.

Creativity strikes back. ASD shows again that the concept is the thing that makes a demo different. its not that this effects haven't been seen before, but its the way they are composed, its the path you walk through the demo that makes this production again stand one step ahead of the others.
Great, great work!

ehm, that's the secret of good effects: they go unnoticeable: the wireframe generation, the boolean geometry operations and Voronoi based triangulation, are, in my knowledge, wholly new effects. Actually this demo has very little code recycling, an unusual thing for ASD demos I must agree :-)

For me, the wireframe generation and the boolean geometry operations in this demo are easily noticed by everyone familiar with 3D graphics (for example, on the truck after it was crossed by the motor bike). These effects are really well made. It was a rare case for a few last yeas when I asked "how?!.." while watching the demo.
A word about soundtrack: it is cool. First of all, I like the sound effects. Second, I like minimal-like sound for a minimal-like visuals. I said "-like" because both are not simple or poor at all. Sound and visuals was just stylized in the "minimal" way, but they are very complex, actually.
So, sfx & gfx was alloyed in the great prod, the great piece of art.

A bit of lore on the asd-verse. The events of Rupture take place on planet Risk, which has been corrupted by your presence (and by "your" I mean the unseen protagonist of the demo whose shoes supposedly the viewer fills).

So in favor of personal gain, and selfish driven actions you managed to initiate a chain reaction. Congratulations.. you totally fucked planet Risk up. But you didn't escape either.

Of course I could be making things up =P

Pretty and consistent. Nice to see ASD now being capable of sticking to one style instead of a random rainbow-coloured mishmash, even in these "major releases". Whoa
I must say I consider this to be the best of all the asd demos. Even though it might not be the one with most effort used in, nor with the totally best soundtrack (which still rocks, nevertheless)

Funny I interpreted this whole thing to be a journey of the humankind towards a better society - with a lot of different obstacles on the course.
As if at the beginning there's only this one enlightened person, who kicks it off, and then get a lot of other people to join in his journey - and together they further expand and beat these obstacles.
And at the end there seems to be even a city like in the Zeitgeist/Venus project society visions. The ringular type of city.
I like this a loot
Thumbs up

Very great as usual! Nice tron-like style. @aMusic&Leviathan: Could you please upload the pure music without the demo-sounds in the background? Btw: nice song-title. :o) @Navis: Why is there no engine-sound oder any other sound when the boat falls through the watertunnel? This is the only part where I get no real connection between music/sound & visuals. But the rest is pure magic.

rulez added on the 2009-04-14 15:20:27 by ferris ferris
@#243: We will upload the non-sfx version of the tune soon. As for the boat engine sound, pick any of the following:

a) The engine moves upside down, causing the fuel to wet the sparkplugs and shut it down.

b) The whirlpool "shields" the sounds from the objects in it

c) The boat engine sound effect was added 20 minutes before Navis left for Norway, hence it's unpolished.

If I find the time and stamina, I'll produce a new mix with more polished sfx (and some added panning bonus). Wouldn't hold my breath though =P

Fantastic demo, and this time I really liked the soundtrack as well.

I purposely didn't watch this when we tested the demos before the compo show. Just ran it, watched a few seconds and said "it works on the compo machine, I don't want to see this before we see it on the big screen" and exited. (Someone else did actually test the entire demo, but I went out of the room before it happened.)

Being able to present stuff like this to the audience at the Gathering made all the work we put in before and during the party more than worth it. Thank you :)

gloom - I don't do it often (ok, twice tonight...) but it's nice to try and spot where some inspiration came from. Even if it was unintended. It's not an accusation of theft or copying or anything like that, just an appreciation that there may be a nod to another demo here and that other demo might also be worth seeing.

But since you moaned about it I'll avoid doing it again.

Anyways about this prod.. I really dig the visuals, especially the play between hot & cold, and how stuff breaks up (tho i would've put more balls into it) but for some odd reason the whole demo, apart from the first 30 seconds, just didn't "do" anything for me. I was actually waiting for it to end.

Also the music was horribly misplaced, at least for my taste.

Props for the effort and the visuals, but i can't thumb this up (actually i was contemplating thumbing this down, but in the greater scheme of things this is one of the better "pop" ASD demos, so i just couldn't)

Maybe the rendering (or some other detail) should have changed for every single part...using the same style makes me feel I'm just looking to a different veichle and I bet I'm wrong.

Ayeah! It's got vehicles and an 8 cyl engine, two of my favourite things. And it's constantly moving somewhere, it never stops and doesn't revolve around some centre. So great! I've always wanted to do a demo like this. The music is as always a bit too slick for my ears, a little extra grittines and stomp would have been nice for the speed-feeling.

Not the best demo ever, but I really really really loved it when I saw it the first time, even if the mix was not perfect.
I have seen it a few times, and it is not as good after that, but I still enjoy it very much (it has a lot of surprise/inital "whoa" facotr).
Definitely one of those demos that I will keep watching once in a while.

@Navis:
Is there any way that I can watch this 16:9 letterboxed on a 4:3 crt? In Lifeforce you could choose a resolution like 1024x768 and it was properly letterboxed with the "force widescreen" option.
But when I try the same combination in this menu, the 16:9 picture isn't in the middle of the screen but squashed to the bottom with the top third of the screen being black...

One of the best demos I've seen in a long while. You always come up with a fresh, new look for your demos and avoid all regular demo cliches, making it a very different experience watching ASD demos than demos from any other group.

I believe this demo will have a very positive effect on all non-demosceners getting introduced to demos. I've talked to many people not previously aware of the demoscene who had their first wow-experience with demos when watching this on the big screen in the TG compo. You managed to impress people beyond the point where "games do it better". Thats excatly what we need to keep the demoscene alive and growing. Thank you again very much for releasing this at The Gathering!

You guys caught the essence of dreams and this production makes me feel so small in comparison. The music sounded better on the second time and there's so much to see. The "fire" shader and colors really complete this.

@ Medron, Well I do wanna play harder and heavier (and I do on my own music) but when it comes to demos I must respect the visuals and figure out parts that would somehow fit but without taking the viewer's attention from them.

As for this track it's far from progressive, no odd signatures or complete theme changing. I'd say it's a mix of power metal. I kept it simple cuz the visual did as well as a whole theme I mean.

Really another FANTASTIC ASD prod!! :-D

BUT:
When trying here at with my machine I get an error:
"ASD-Rapture.exe: Couldn't initialize correctly! Press OK"

D/L'ed the version from TG09 (scene.org) and the one linked here directly from ASD site! Both give the same error!

My specs:
Core2Duo E6600, Nvidia 8800GTX, latest drivers, latest DX9, winXP SP3.

So please don't tell me now that an 8800gtx is already too 'outdated' for this prod, is it!? ;-))) THAT what be _really_ extremely rad, dude(s)... :-)

...and - to repeat the question from above - WHY is the zip _and_ the included .exe called rApture when the prod is listed as rUpture everywhere? Weird !?!? ;-)

i'm not really for or against this production. i can't stand the guitars in the asd-demos, they are just misplaced (and yes, i do occasionally listen to metal music and enjoy it - so thats not the point).

one thing i noticed was that navis stated that boolean operators on geomtry is a new effect and the voronoi is new too - and that is not the case either :-) i could'nt find any examples for voronoi, but i know they exists and boolean operators have been used for ages ...

i will give this a piggy, since it's awesome code, great visuals, shitty music and a plotless plot (i.e. it appears to have a plot, but it's leading to nowhere).
macaw: "boolean" operations the way it is been done here - it is not really operations on geometry but rather a neat trick in the shader using the "discard;" command. I'm not claiming to be the inventor, it's just that I haven't seen it somewhere else in a *demo* - but maybe somebody else has done in it the past and I missed it.

The voronoi stuff is probably alot more common (although I presume that farbrausch did it differently in debris, at least according to the seminar by chaos).
added on the 2009-04-29 10:22:02 by Navis Navis
booleans: medium uses alpha test to slice objects (because it's for dx7 level hw). whether you compute the function in the shader or store it in a texture and then use alpha test is pretty immaterial. also, the "mesh floodfill" seen in a bunch of fairlight demos starting from track one works the same way, with a differently computed mask value.

you decided to release this on the gathering, for whatever reason, to impress some gamers maybe, but you could have released it anywhere; it would have won. this demo is just so brilliant and beautiful and powerful and fresh, that i can hardly bare the fact that it was actually not released on breakpoint, where such a demo was clearly lacking and where such a demo would have won by far. i willl still prefer lifeforce over this, due to its diversity, but the code, gfx, music, direction and flow of this one here at hand totally convince me, more than i can express. thank you very much for this great experience.

But as others have mentioned, and I too have in previous prods. The Synth guitars are not my cup of tea. IMO it ruins your tracks. Reminds me too much of Jan Hammer tunes back in the early 90ies.
But hey, do what you like to do. As one can see in the comments, a lot of people like it, so why not :)
Overall very good work guys.

tFt, it is a common misconception that the guitars in the tunes I make with Leviathan are.. uh.. synths?... probably cause someone said it and then people joined the bandwagon.

However all of the guitars in the tunes that Leviathan and I write together have REAL guitars, performed by Leviathan on an Ibanez K7. Furthermore I fail to see how the guitars resemble a synth sound.. or Jan Hammer for that matter...

Same it doesn't work for me in Win7 (64bit), Lifeforce works fine though.

Works here, Win7 64bits RTM, Geforce GTX 260.

Stationary texture on trailer, pistons, transformation to ice floe scene, death twitches of helicopter.

4 more reasons to fucking love ASD.

The force is strong with ASD. Keep ruling!

Forgot to vote on this... so: amazing music, neck-breaking pace, and best "vectorish" demo ever overall.

After a many watches I must admit, the scene with helicopter is best scene in all demos I have ever seen for decades. Still breathtaking after hundred rewatches from 5:15 to end of demo. And that godlike ending music !

I wish I could give this more than one thumb.
A spectacular show.

ehm, I've never seen this video before in my life. How weird... was this released before or after April 2009? It is amazing that there are some models that are almost identical! (well ok, almost).

Well, that's something demoscene is living for. Fantastic production. LSDish ideas, rocking music, detailed & big modells, nice effects, and all this in really awesome mix!
And yeah, it runs perfectly even not on supa-dupa-new (for 2009) PCs. That's incredible.

Outstanding work.

Incredibly stylish and thrilling. I like ASD demos like this more than stuff like Planet Risk, Iconoclast, or Lifeforce, where direction is nearly ruined by desire to cram every new idea in the same release.

The demo does not run. On both WinXP and Win7. I installed .NET framework, DirectX, VC++ redist. Nothing helps. Gives me error '0xc0150002'. I vote for 'sucks' for this demo because someone making a demo must care at least a little about compatibility.
sucks added on the 2012-08-06 21:41:25 by Nsimaod Nsimaod
These demos have been amongst the most "compatible" ones, at least until last year. I can't predict future hardware and drivers, in the same sense that glide based demos won't run on modern hardware.
