Sorry to say this but I don't like it. Sure, the concept is pretty nice but it feels like the demo suffers from design recycling... and I don't like the design. To much eyestrain. I hoped for more...

yep, that's the ASD in action. as psychedelic as it is.

p.s. isn't the demo name spelled wrong here?..

Ahhh.. that was great! Seriously good style and feel, and I love that tune.

Yes, the name is spelled wrong. The correct title is "Midnight Run". Fix me beautiful!

this thumb is for the demo and alot for the music, its so nice to hear someone doing something a bit fresh and daring to stray from the typical demoscene style music i hear so often, so respect for that, as it stands the track in its own right is really very nice, i'd love to know what the (greek?) lyrics are saying :)

nice demo aswell, beginning this from the end of the previous demo was lovely, a really nice ride, thanks :)

Keito, the lyrics lose a lot when translated from greek, but here it goes anyhow:

Ten thousand stars in front of me
like light-blue paper pins holding/keeping my dreams..
...true
...carefree

Between my teeth I hold a leaf of spearmint
I close my eyes and see the world...
..with colors
..transparent

Maybe I am...
...a ray of sunshine, ...a god long forgotten

Maybe I have...
...let a heartbeat skip, ...fallen asleep in your arms again

added on the 2008-08-27 11:42:25 by aMUSiC aMUSiC
Actually it translates pretty ok, it sounds beautiful when sung in Greek though, thanks for the translation, as now next time i watch this it will have a bit more meaning and depth for me :)
added on the 2008-08-27 11:44:56 by keito keito
whoops.. right after ..a god long forgotten there's one more verse:

...air of Scirocco, ...Aura's enemy
added on the 2008-08-27 11:45:18 by aMUSiC aMUSiC
Well keito, it's some allegory in greek words with dual meanings that are not easily translatable to english without making the english lyrics look like a wikipedia analysis =) Of course rhyming and rhythm is totally lost as well =)

Sure i understand that the meaning gets lost in translation like so many things, but it's still nice to have a little understanding even if i can only grasp half of the meaning through translation, so thanks again :)

i can't stop watching this! HELP!!

anyway I really love it, while it does re-use some Metamorposis tech, the overall tone is completely different, there's enough new tricks and the vocals are so catchy; definitely a demo on its own and not just a recycle
i've enjoyed this one even more than metamorphosis, so pure and trippy!

it reminds me a lot of psychedelic art from the beatles (yellow submarine) or the zanny monty python movies :)

I liked Metamorphosis more but this is also very cool!

ah, the second episode! you should release both demos as one :D

paralax scrolling galore! i like the occasional splashes of color in there. the music was a funny contrast to the moody set. some scenes seemed to be a bit too empty.

this looks like you're on your way to finding a new kind of chemistry in your demos, please continue your exploration :)

awesomeMUSIC and little nice ideas all over the place. i miss some connection between music and visuals. music sounds more like bright-warm-colors-sundown-at-the-beach-kind-of-mood than midnight to me.

i love the music, didnt like the demo as just like metamorphosis it just doesnt work for me... and next to that, also what okkie said it's a good title sequence for some weird symbolic art 70s movie.
Metamorphosis 2? Even better than the first imho. Maybe hearing a greek voice in a demo singing a silly song made me laugh or made me like this one :)

Many very nice ideas, and I think it adds wonderfully to "Metamorphosis" -- instead of being just a rather cheap sequel. Although admittedly, I did fear the worst when the demo was just underway :).

Personally the best aspect of the demo was the uplifting mood, in no small part because of the excellent soundtrack. It really left me in a good once it was over.

I am so much in love with this demo, because it counters the tension which Metamorphosis built due to its moderately dystopian message (at least if you follow my interpretation). The fly ended up as a terrifying, unnatural creature due to the mechanical turn which the world took, and flies away into the stars.
I see Midnight Run more as the lifestory of a human person, with his souls coming from the stars which the fly went lost in, and into birthwater. In the demo, he goes through a period of leissure (the men with hands on each other shoulders), which turns out to be completely mindless, as the man leading the line has his arms raised though there are no shoulders to hold, making him appear more like a zombie while he goes into the big machine.
However, the protagonist survives, and eventually the demo ends with him flying into the stars, which were the setting which started the demo, completing the cyclus.
I see the end as his soul leaving earth complete, as opposed to the fly which lost itself in the menace.

It's hope and tragedy at its finest. True art.
Oh, and my mom loves it :)
Some more information about the music in respect to the demo. When I first saw the initial video (which was up to the part with the swimmers hanging from the strings), the visuals gave a trully dark and suffocating mood.

At that point I decided to write a tune that would contrast the whole dark mood instead of enhancing it, giving an ironic sentiment of what us greeks call "Harmolipi" (meaning joy and sadness at the same time), and this is why even the song title (Afternoon Stroll) contradicts the demo title.

Throughout the demo, visuals and music battle with each other to set the dominant mood (sad or happy) and in the end it's up to the viewer who won =)

Personally, I believe that even though the main protagonist (who is not Phelps but has at least equally good lungs for such a deep dive) dies and his soul flies to the stars, the visuals give in to the music and set a generally happy mood.

Besides... as the protagonist leaves this world, another life is being born to form a new cycle. It's no mere coincidence that the last scene takes place in the Lifeforce mountain with the bicycle and the tree.

Finally the lyrics (sung by Matilda) refer to the dependancy of human beings from each other, and how a connection to one alter one's personality to feel and think of things greater than he/she is.

I will probably never be skilled enough to do something like this.

Still I don't like it. It doesn't feel like a demo. But more like some abstract animation from 1970's public service tv. The wallpaper style background tiles really didn't make things better.

But I'll keep it a pignose for the work involved..

Sorry, but this kind of "2D" demos on a current PC are totally boring - do this on an oldschool computer and it would be good.

In my opinion a demo should show the hardware capabilities of a plattform combined with design, graphics and music.

nice stuff yet again, though i think people might get a little tired if the pipes are getting recycled yet again for another time.
as it's the case for excellent movies, the sequels usually ruins it a bit, if things are being overdone. unique things aren't called unique for nothing. =)

about the music - while the song is nice, i'd say it didn't fit the overall mood at all - if i'm leaving the very end of the judgement. </narrowmindedness>

still, nothing qualifies an inverted thumb here.

oh, and pouet finally needs to get that tag-system running. i'll start:

FINALLY FINALLY someone who dares to leave the known paths of demoscene music and dares to try something new. Amusic, you get 10 thumbs from me for that alone, plus the song itself is total bliss. The hihats part with the pizzicato violins and piano reminds me of the soundtrack of the movie Atonement where a typewriter was used in a similar way. Totally brilliant stuff, Amusic. And overall a great demo as well. Rules.

added on the 2008-08-29 15:43:25 by Pit Pit
Hi all,

First of all thanks for a great party experience. NVision '08 was the place to be, and on the night of the compo there wasn't any other place in the world I would like to be.

Amusic's description of the demo is spot on. Together with metamorphosis, it tries to pass a rather complex message, and, depending on interpretation, the demo ends in an optimistic or pessimistic note. Some people say that the music and visuals don't mix. I would say that that is the whole point ! We wanted to create an unsettling experience: morbid, dark (but in times comical) visuals with light (but with sorrow lyrics) music.

So for me these two are amongst my favourite asd demos. The reason is that they carry a message rather than being a dick-show (don't get me wrong, I'm not referring to the most honorable demos that rightly came #1 and #2, as well as some of the other effect-based demos in this compo. I'm talking about the kind of demos some of you want us (asd) to do for the sole purpose of making your 96-pipeline gfx card monster happy). And as a matter of fact, technically, the two demos are as hard to do as your average object-shade-display demo. As such:

"The year is 1992. Everything I do I do it for you by Bryan Adams is top of the charts for the nth week running, the youth are watching Beverley hills 90210 and Bill Clinton the saxophonist is running for president of the US and A. Most Atari and Amiga sceners are on a desperate war to prove that they can display one more shade bob simultaneously on the screen".

Hell I don't want to be part of this world anymore. You catch my drift ?

and something I forgot, my kudos to my friends:

amusic and matilda for their smashing tune: the experiment worked !! :-)

iM and amoivikos: tireless vector designing machines, even while being on holidays! . There would be no demo without them.

added on the 2008-09-02 16:12:00 by keops keops
thanks. It is actually quite easy, the whole demo took us about 2.5 weeks. There is alot less code recycle as it might seem. I think there are only 2 higher-level functions that are being used here taken directly from metamorphosis. One is the growing strips (30-40 lines of code) and another the rotating gears (another 20-30). The whole thing is not more than 6-7k lines of pure opengl.

As you can imagine, there are layers upon layers of 2D objects that come and go as the camera moves. Technically there is nothing fancy here, apart maybe from some tesselation - vectorization functions which needed some work (the hammers banging are all vector objects for example).

By the way, the decision to make a second part of metamorphosis was taken around the time when we were finishing metamorphosis, so there was a plan in place rather than a last minute effort to put together something for nvision. My only worry was that there was no time (with our other demo "size antimatters" needing alot more work, especially in 3D modelling). But it is all done now, I'm quite happy with the result.

Glad I can help! :)

It's not that this is a terrible demo whatsoever, but it seems like I see scrolly vector anims everywhere these days - in adverts, music vids, movie titles, flash anims and so on. Whereas demos like Lifeforce, Iconoclast and alike strike me as a much more unique and personal...and a lot more impressive.

I respect ASD for trying new styles and if they have more fun with this kind of thing, then fair play to them, but it's just not my thing this time round.

niels_tpb:

Midnight run, just like metamorphosis, is hardcoded indeed. What that means is:

First of all the cameras are based on implicit functions (combination of linear movement and sin/cos). The evolving strips are based on a "logo" like movement (move 20 rotate 10 move 20 etc) that is generated on the fly through random numbers with fixed, predifined seed. The positioning of the different elements was done manually with the mouse (gltranslatef (x,y,z); showobject(); etc.) Most of the graphics are vectors (traced on the fly from the jpgs designed by iM).

I suggest you take a look at one of my presentations (either from breakpoint 08 or nvnsion ) where I explain in more detail why and how I do it this way.

This one runs on relatively old computers though

Too much of recycling spoils both this as well as previous releases. Nevertheless, there are still enough fresh elements for a thumb

it is relaxed, it is beautiful, it is art.

Well this on is just great. Doesn't have the same kind of obscure and mind nerving athmosphere than the first one of these demos but the graphicx, music and overall excecution is just astonishing.

You can nothing but love this demo :)

Wonderful.
I find new details each time I watch it.
Music is really soothing - nice!

I never thumbed it?

The music isn't my cup of tea at all but I respect the fact aMusic tries out with other genres.

Anyway, it didn't made me quit the demo at all, I really enjoyed watching it. It has poetry inside, indeed.
yes

Together with its sibling demo, this is one of the nicest demos from the PC-scene in many years. Let's hope this can be an influence and a well-needed vitaminkick in the future aswell.
Thumb up, that is.

At first I didn’t like the music (cause Metamorphosis was very electronic), but after a while I get used to it and now I love it. Deserved the scene-award.

Original. But sometimes it works so slow and it could be prettier. Plus for non-electronic music.

Thank you very much. This was a quite adequate sunshine substitute on a gloomy sunday. Love all the little animation touches, the uplifting yet sad music, the great use of artificial patterns to suggest natural elements (talking about the textures) .. and the refusal to envelop you like demos often do.

i wish i would be a woman and married to navis ;)
make it a trilogy plz, i want high_flying/escaping_navis to land on some planet and have some adventures in settings never seen before ;) ( that alien ending metamorphosis and starting this one could play a major role in this ! )
My son likes it.
(BTW this is my favourite ASD demo and I _love_ this song.)

I think this is very nice work, including the soundtrack. To those who say it is recycled from the "same" work prior, I say no, it's upcycled! Very well done, and a unique style.
