Finally released. Tom, all my greetings for being so good at what you do, writing that novella was not something anyone could do, you are the one and only one having had the power to make it more spicy and more attracting to read. Thanks for that, that piece of code definitely has to be put and spread everywhere. That release's worth 1000 good demos. Keep it coming, and next time i'll be full up without girls problems, you can be sure of that. I love you. Greetings to Will for having found exactly the perfect fitting musical theme for that piece of code/text, nothing would have fitted much than your music. I love you.
Keep the good work up Demoscene Stories <3.

great stuff!! loved it. the concept, the story, the writting style, the soundtrack. great stuff!
real shame about those couple of translation flaws: holly should be holy, you cant get fired from clubs and parties, and you dont apply exams in english. other than that i really enjoyed reading this thing :)
big thumb up for tom!

amazing!
As one of the first read of the french .pdf version I must admit the whole experience of watching it like it is a diskmag is just fucking different.
Willbe did an amazing work at catching exactly the kind of ambiance that needed this story, some tracks reminded me Blade Runner or the Neocron mmorpg.
This story will definitly help you to understand L.C.F. :)
Much better than I expected (Sorry, but I read through hackertales from these guys, you know. The whole crappy lot of it)
Nice tracks + name dropping (Whitney Sterling et al.)

What ps said. Also, extra mad props to willbe for capturing the chapters' moods so precisely.

But first of all congrats for breaking artistic ground by doing the old trick: Taking established things and recombining them to something previously unseen.

A reasonable story in a nice sound bath. But sorry guys, the writing didn't make it to me (in french for me ;). It sounds more like "my inside story of the demoscene translated to a pseudo made-up story" instead of a real and addictive novel that should have been the pilar of this production.
But you get my thumb up for the effort :)

i haven't downloaded this, but what is it? is it a short story or is it a demo?
This is a fictionnal story about demoscene, available under the "diskmag" format. And it can be also considered as a musicdisk, due to the presence of 21 tracks among the 21 chapters of the story.
added on the 2007-10-12 20:43:14 by willbe willbe
Word. I tried to put that release as diskmag at the very beginning but it got changed back. Lemme try to put it again :)
Oh, and soundrack link added.

"diskmag" tag removed again. Why wouldn't it fit in diskmag category?! I mean, it's interactive, and it's not a slideshow, what the heck?
added on the 2007-10-13 03:48:59 by iks iks
Maybe a diskmag need at least two novels..? Dunno
added on the 2007-10-13 10:39:00 by SilkCut SilkCut
it has.
in case this is a musicdisk, this is also a diskmag.
added on the 2007-10-13 11:03:49 by las las
(or at least it has more texts than just the story)
added on the 2007-10-13 11:04:20 by las las
Impressive and well executed!
rulez added on the 2007-10-13 12:02:04 by Cosmocat Cosmocat
I'm not the one who removed the tag but I do agree with the removal. This simply ain't a diskmag (just like a book ain't a magazine).

This is simply something new for which there isn't a proper category yet (which is actually something good like kb already mentioned) so Wild is probably the only tag that really fits here. Even better would be no tag at all, but unfortunately pouet can't handle that.
added on the 2007-10-13 12:35:10 by sparcus sparcus
ps, find us some suitable thingie for it please :) Like, dunno, "novella", or dunno what, which would fit for a fiction about demoscene, all coded and stuff.
added on the 2007-10-13 12:42:20 by iks iks
not "novella", but "scenella" ;-)

Thanks for the positive feedback, guys. You really give me motivation for a sequel.

GJN : There's really nothing to "get" here. It's just a story. Like in a book or a movie. :)

nice story, nice music.

The UI would be a lot better if it allowed alt+tabbing out. Scrolling to the page I left off when I closed and reopened it later is a pain in the ass.

I managed to find time for reading this in the Munchen Airpory yesterday - and DAMN this is cool :)

Some points of constructive nitpickery:
- (I know, I know, but:) English. Please get a native (or proficient) proofreader / "producer" next time - it really helps the readability if the text flows by itself, and the audience doesn't have to concentrate of trying to make sense out of it.
- This might be just me, but the narrator seemed too reliable and yet too much of an "outsider" to the happenings; it conveyed as someone who incites all the consequences, but yet is indifferent to them. Some more emotional reflection, perhaps on expense to reliability would've added some spice to it. Tycoon just seemed too calm, yet not cynical enough.
- The "history" sections felt a bit disrupting at some places and polarized the fact/fiction nature a bit too much to the extent, but overall they added to the intertweened nature of past/present really well.
- The text rendering had a bit of the ZINE-effect, not sure why but letters grouped up a bit weirdly at some places.

All in all, really looking forward to the next part :)

Yeah thanks a lot for the constructive tips, Gargaj. Too bad you didn't read it BEFORE the trip to SF though, since there are a few nods to ILM in the novella. It would have shown how much we care about them. :)

finallly, I read it... I may have jump over some parts at the end (i'm not usually into fiction novels), but definitely worth a thumb for the effort of writing \ translating\coding it! Special mention to willbe for some well inspired background musics, especially chapter 13 's one.
I have many comments on some points, but I want to point out that this can be only understandable by sceners. I mean read page 78/80, who else can understand that ? Well, I'll flame something in the forum :) thumb up anyway. Oh and yeah, it's lissajouS <-

I really loved this story!
It's a great idea to pay homage to the demoscene in this way! So many memories... and emotions!
Bravo for the "app" format of the book, magnificent staging, very beautiful effects, worthy of a great film!

I loved the different references to famous groups and demos. I also took short breaks to re-memorize these demos via youtube and pouet.net, I knew almost all of them, even those on Amiga. What a delight and what an emotion to see them again! My brain/heart/body remembers these beautiful graphic and sound effects and the emotion that goes with it, just talking about it again, the animations and the music come back to my mind, nostalgia nostalgia!

You give "explanations" on this "art", I like that and it's actually too rare to talk about it in this "way", bravo... and thank you too! because it's important to "demonstrate" that the demo is really an art and it's in any case so much more than young people who are ecstatic to have turned on a few moving pixels in their teenager's room...

It's also a good idea to pay tribute to all these explorers/precursors, History is important too!

I also loved the music which complements the story perfectly! Bravo and thank you to the composer willbe, great work to pay tribute to the music of the demoscene, so good!

In short, a big THANK YOU for this beautiful work of art and for the emotions it creates in the reader :-)
