For those not having the real machine, you can try Vice emulator with the proper settings (no expansion memory, 5kb of ram) or else it won't run: Settings -> Vic settings

Congrats to Ultra and 4Mat for the great and fast job.

i can't comment on the code, and i would suck at doing so - so i'll just take this as being the best multiparter i've seen for the non-expanded machine yet. excellent musick by 4-mat, excellent design, and uh .. i think the code's good too. if only i could say something about that.

megademo + amazing stuff + great music. and a surprise as well (+ 4mat coding?! on a vic20?! :)). since i love classic raster effects i love the greetings part. now i must watch this again :)

Wow, great effects + music, and it seems to go on forever :D

Only criticism - the music cuts a bit to abruptly in most parts, but i guess it's a minor thing.
rulez added on the 2007-09-09 10:26:36 by psonice psonice
An amazing load of effects.... not my prefered Vic20 demo (Robotic Liberation is definitively the top) but the 2nd ;-)

Some effects absolutely fabulous.... some maybe too newskool for the Vic20 (offsetmap4ever ?)... I'm really fond of the "classic effects" (scroller, dots, distorts, rasters...)

C-64 guys should finally realize that putting stuff in the "borders" is not an issue on the VIC-20:

$9000 = x position of screen
$9001 = y posiiton of screen
$9002 = width of screen
$9003 = height of screen

ok how do i get this on my vic20 cassetteloader?
rulez added on the 2007-09-09 11:33:55 by s0r s0r
Pure Rock'n'Roll!
I esp dig the music, I didn't know that this 1980 vintage VIC can produce such nice ziks.

Only small thing: part transitions are too abrupt but it doesn't kill the experience!
rulez added on the 2007-09-09 12:05:26 by simonsunnyboy simonsunnyboy
Perhaps the first vic20 demo with decent music.

But the loader bar armada kills the flow. :(

OK, I finally managed having a look on it, using VICE emulator.
My personal thought : the beginning of the production is really, really, really impressive. Unfortunately, last parts become progressively kind of boring (sinus dots and horizontal deformation coming to my mind).

BTW - can someone tell me why this production is called "megademo" ?

I mean, and correct me if I'm wrong..

- a multi-part production where users wait for the end of a part or press space to discover the next one should be called a MAXIDEMO

- a multi-part production with a menu to select parts to launch should be called a MEGADEMO

Your thought?
added on the 2007-09-11 16:21:00 by norecess norecess
NoRecess: if you look at RSI Megademo or some Kefrens Megademos (not all, especially 8), they had no menu :)

norecess, the word megademo comes from when the first megademo was released in 1987, its unpacked size was one MEGAbyte, so the creators decided to name it that way and started a trend.

THIS DEMO (even on emul) IS *FANTASTIC*. I'm shocked. Every part is 5Kb big??
Well, considering VIC-20's specification - the demo cruches C64 into pieces.
And by the way - I am a fan of VIC-20's sound, I have even a chiptune album of Warlord and I listen to it often. This music is fine too.

"Well, considering VIC-20's specification - the demo cruches C64 into pieces."

not at all, thumbs up for the demo, but I must say this demo is far from being close to the technical level of the best c64 stuff.

the gfx tricks are really nice, but while having the same cpu at the same speed, displaying 1-2-3 hundred dots at 50 fps is quite weak, or table based effects with reduced size only due to ram limits? nope, technically not THAT awesome. sorry.
rulez added on the 2007-09-13 12:50:23 by Oswald Oswald
Oswald: 5kb of ram instead of 64kb does make a huge difference for table based effects though, more than differences of cpu speed ;)

Quite good, just wonder why is so long to load less than 5kb of data between each part (I assume it's packed ?).

Is this due to VIC floppy drive being very very slow ? Is it not possible to do fast loaders or something ?

however, i'm not really into this, i don't really appreciate chiptunes etc so ...
Cool demo, good music.

Some nice fx, and I like the music, but something that annoyed me was the abrupt end to tunes in places, rather than the nicer fading out which happened only in some parts. Kinda shocked you into the loading of the next part.
On the whole tho', some nice stuff.

Wow, wow and wow! Congratz guys! You rule! The chesszoom + musik with sampled drums was just adoreable... like the rest! Cool with unextended memory aswell.. :-) Hope that the original designers of the vic20 will see this running on their creation. I bet they wont belive it could be done! :-)

For those interested, 4 Mat made a 4k musicdisk featuring the uncut chiptunes from the demo : http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=34510

It also includes the source for the player, in case some people want to give Vic 20 a try :)

Hi all...We've updated the demo:

New Features:
-------------

-Fastloader: On the fly GCR decode (can be done faster I know was enough for the vc20)
-5 new 4mat tunes
-6 new screens
-two new effects from 4mat
-the end part has been
totally rewritten by 4mat
-three new effects from ultra
-All screens of ultra have been reworked to fade out clean
-Some of the screens got a facelift
-Samples and replay in the checkboard zoomer was updated. we recognised it's almost not hearable on real hardware.
-Fixed bugs

In two screens we are using the unconnected ram feature first used by viznut...

Starting:
--------

The demo comes with two different
starters on disk:

"omd.full"

Shows all effects old and new... So if you have some time left start this one. Runtime is almost 16 minutes...

"omd.new.parts"

If you fed up with the old effects you can run this one. Shows only the new effects. Except of intro and endpart. Runtime is almost 10 minutes...

i really hope it's working... and if possible watch on real hardware or emulator...

cheers ultra...

Very cool loading! Lovely new effects!

To rain on your parade a bit though, the new music tracks don't exactly compare to the originals, not even close :/. I'd kinda like an "omd.old.parts" version as well, but a superbly cool update regardless! One of my favorite proper oldskool demos.

Cool new version! But why not make a completely new demo with the new content instead of adding it to an old demo? Scene needs more VIC20 releases! :)

yes... i thought about that ... but some of the screens should have been included in the first version and well was an easy way to do something new without doing an entire new demo ;)
