this is perhaps the first video demo ever, and for a very, very long time, the best.

although it looks a bit unfinished, it was everything a video demo should be. no stupid render stuff. no "how we got to the party" home video. it's a real demo with real effects that were impossible in realtime at that time.

of course there was render stuff and video sequences, and the second half is filled with movie sequences, but it's done in a demo style, and there is much more than just that.

my first thumb up here.

Two thumbs up for this CLASSIC video demo. Download now.

It's a classic no doubt, i think jesper and mikael made that when they worked at some danish tv-company, but i might be wrong aswell... :)

A bit incoherent at times, but it really rules, it would be great even if it had been released later and the music kicks ass.

The crowd went wild when they showed this on The Party 1. I remember standing there not being too impressed and thinking "hmmm, if they're gonna do a demo on a tv station's graphics equipment, anything is possible. That just takes the fun out of demos."

But in retrospect I must admit this was quite a cool and groundbreaking demo.
rulez added on the 2004-02-06 20:32:46 by cruzer cruzer
Well, its kind of so-so... The music itself is pretty good, but most of the scenes are basically cuts from old cult movies.
added on the 2004-07-30 02:40:26 by Nezbie Nezbie
Jesper Kyd kicks ass, so did this wild. Setting new standards is something which keept the demoscene always alive. To bad, they've fucked up with the where/were.

Quote:
Global Trash II has been shown at computer conferences all over Europe and has been shown on MTV Europe several times. It helped give birth to a new scene called WILD Demos in '91, and today the WILD Demo Scene includes many demo groups. Global Trash II was the first video demo to hit the demoscene, setting a new standard in demo's and videos.

Has anyone tried to remake this demo in realtime with modern PC equipment? It seems like it ought to be possible now. (comments about blasphemy aside)
rulez added on the 2006-06-20 01:30:33 by crusader crusader
i think if i saw it back in 1991 i'd have wet my pants!! this rules so much! the feedback effect, the textured face, the landscape.. even the video grabs had their moments.

kyd has done better music imho and compared to some of the best modern pc demos it's not that special.. that's my only negative comment..

they indeed discovered newskool in 1991, wtf!?

To think about how much this production has done for the demoscene is mindblowing, and then pair that with Hardwired released around the same time makes it unreal.

This is legendary.

Shame on me for not thumbing this up until 18,5 years after I saw it.

If I recall correctly, Michael Balle worked as a visual artist at Nordisk Film in Copenhagen back in 1991.
And this video-demo was made on the Silicon Graphics computer at his workplace

Very ambitious for 1991, especially the first couple minutes. Music could be better but then again it's just a style I'm far from a fan of.
