i fucking hate Veronica Maggio! i really hate her. but you make her voice fit the demo so well.. btw do you got rights to use the sample? or is it timbaland stylee ripping? anyway, best demo in quite some while, on any platform. and especially cool that it is on the psp!

magic: i don't care i'm just frustrated i don't have the binary in my hands :D
guardian: well, i think most of us dont have a psp to see the binary work so an .avi is the next best thing. however, for the lucky ones who have a psp i can imagine the frustration.. :) here is my thumo for TBL btw.

Guns, girls, beer; everything a young man desires nicely packaged together.

Great soundtrack too, even if the vocals are ripped.

really great demo!

Can't wait to see it on my PSP.

ah and one more thing. I knew all the time that Debevec's building.hdr HDRI cube map has the best lighting properties, hard to recreate using homebrew photography techniques. But i think you should credit Debevec in this prod. Just because it is really good.

Stylish as always from TBL!

I wonder how this videocap is done - I mean it's clear that it is not recorded of a real PSP running the demo, and there are to my knowledge no PSP emulators for PC... Is it possible to capture the framebuffer from a PSP and write it to the memcard frame by frame?

Actually, there are apps for PSP that stays resident while running another program and writes the frames to the memorystick, not unlike kkapture.

But I don't know if this is the method they used for this demo or they simply wrote their own framedumper.

Either way, the memory stick is helpful in this aspect.
added on the 2007-04-10 01:41:16 by a_lee_n a_lee_n
The frames were dumped using a custom frame writer and written to host: using the psplink usb-driver. After that VirtualDub was used to encode it into XviD.

Oh, and give the guys a moment to catch their breath, unpack and sleep some and binaries will come. :)

Don't try to be more catholic than the pope. :) We can always add additional download links to a prod.

She's not saved. She jumps to her death. (without a parachute and all...) ;)

Anyway, yes, it's too static, many details missing (most apparent: the mirror that won't mirror), the awkward walking animations could be less awkward, etc. pp.

Nonetheless, it's fun and clever and has that certain rulez-factor.

and it is well executed on PSP, it would have ranked high in the PC-compo, too.

Great 3d models, clean artstyle.
A nice amount of humor as well; the Bullet Bills especially made me laugh :)
The animations could have been better, which (despite being deliberately awkward probably,) seemed a bit odd at times.

I reckon that it's the worthy winner of a great compo and finally a reason to brush my PSP's dust off (once the binaries are released)!

If anything, that is the most sad thing about console/handheld releases. Nobody cares to get at the real thing.

Anyway, I still cannot shake the idea that this is anything but a TBL release. Louie did art direction and Rubber apparently wrote a scroller. Nobody credited MFX and/or Kewlers for Track One because of the soundtrack either, now did they.

I tried to refuse to watch the video version but since there are still no binaries and I missed it at BP I just couldn't resists any longer. I totally hate the music in this one, almost ruins the whole demo for me, the graphics on the other hand are totally cool, the usual Louie quality. I will give my final rating once I saw it on the real hardware. :)

Two things I would have liked you to tell us:
- Roberto Roseano is uncredited.
- The music is uncredited.
Just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Smash Designs did the same with pictures by H.R. Giger.

Technically, it looked amazingly fine, but was this even rendered on the PSP? Looks like a PC-render to me, does it even run that well on real hardware? (this question is not the reason for my thumbdown).
sucks added on the 2007-04-12 19:57:16 by Lord Graga Lord Graga
Graga: How would you know those are uncredited when theres no official release yet? Just Magic adding the production with a videolink from the compo.

The song is so known in sweden it really doesnt need "credit", if someone took the song from "Bad" by Michael Jackson and made a DnB with it, would you demand credit? Still. Theres no official release, maybe theres big fat credit-alert for people who cant figure out things themselves.

Somehow i think the title of this production means they never really tried to hide where the idea came from.

And about theres no binaries and wheter it runs on PSP, why don't you guys just ask the BP orga team? Maybe its all bullocks but if so its fucking cool winning Breakpoint with a prerendered animation.

Stefan, sure the song is well known in SWEDEN, but this was in germany with an international audience.
If they had used a well known international hit we would have been like "ok, nice choice of music, but hey, why don't make something original" - now we actually said something like: "wow, nice music, wish we could get similar vocals for our stuff", as we took the originality for granted (as it would probably be both rule breaking and illegal otherwise).
Add the copyright issues and an aggressive music industry - I don't think we would like 'music piracy' in the scene.
And about adding credits later - well, wasn't credited at the bigscreen...
And would you consider that obscure barbie suicide page common knowledge too and therefore not needing credits? I don't consider this part much of an issue, that's just inspiration and maybe showing some lack of creativity ;)
(could have been cool with the curry wurst machine instead of the garlic press though ;)

Otherwise nice demo with usual great direction and graphics from louie, but this music thing is crossing the line.

Just ask any swede where the lyrics are from and youll have the answer, everybody on #breakpoint knew, nobody cared since it was brilliant execution.

For most of us originality is only a plus, nothing we ever would take for granted, since it would be quite.. Original on the demoscene.

the first TBL-prod in years i really liked. brilliant art-direction and modeling.

calling this demo being not creative (because of mrs. maggio and mr. roseano) seems very odd to me. theres much difference between a citation, a reference, a remix, a refinement and a plain ripp-off.

Members of TBL (especially the musician or whoever feels responsible for the production at whole): Please contact the BP organizers urgently at [email protected] or ircnet #breakpoint. We need to talk about the possible copyright infringement of the soundtrack, so we can decide whether we have to disqualify and nuke the release.

I have to agree. I love this demo, but my opinion dropped when I saw the original pictures and heard the original music.

I won't take full credit away from Louie though because he clearly had a lot of input regards the modelling, colours and visual direction.

It's kinda like a movie based on a book. The original idea is someone else's, but the presentation is down to the directors/set designers/actors and so on.
Very good direction, even tho the theme seems really odd to me, this demo certainly does the magic.

Here is the way to run it:

Place the %__SCE__SuicideBarbie & __SCE__SuicideBarbie directories & content into PSP/GAME and the rest in data/demotest at the root of the memorystick (aka: ms0:data/demotest/back_01 ms0:data.demotest/head etc.).

Well, as long as you're wearing the Timbaland Reality Distortion Helmet, you might argue that the demo never broke into the houses of the respective artists being "inspiration" for this demo -stealing their protools and nonsense.

The realtime version is pretty terrible in terms of performance. Sounds like SFC shouldn't be just the moral winner of this compo.
added on the 2007-04-16 00:06:43 by Shifter Shifter
Performance might be affected depending of the quality of your memorycard. There are some cheap cards which just aren't able to give enough throughput. For me the demo is rolling almost smoothly from a SanDisk 2G card.

As for getting the demo to work... It obviously starts just fine under clean 1.5 firmware, but fails to work under these OE-type firmwares, unless executed from PSPLink.
added on the 2007-04-16 00:33:56 by Zer0-X Zer0-X
You do need a fast memorycard to watch this demo, since it is constantly streaming content (not only sound). If you can, try avoiding PSPLink, since it takes some CPU and doesn't guarantee enough throughput (you get this jerky sound).

This binary was tested only with 1.5 firmware... but, oh well, it's a party version.

I loved the demo at Breakpoint. But what really spoils it for me is not even the stealing of ideas, but rather the fact that they are labelling it as their own by not giving credit to the people they borrowed the specific ideas from (and the resemblances can't be accidental really). The idea-borrowing doesn't bother me much, but I still think it should have been shown as a video-recording of an actual PSP running it, not some perfect-framerate video.
Shouldn't this be a common-sense rule for the wild compo - entries should be recorded running on the real hardware. If the hardware doesn't have any video output (like handhelds) well then you put the thing on a table, run the demo and videotape it. It might not look as "clean" as a frame-by-frame capture, but it gives a much more correct view of how the prod runs.

Regarding the face made of bubbles, then it seems they took a effect from a static image and made it realtime-ish, which is cool IMO. I don't think that should be taken as a negative. Hell, if everyone gave credits for effect inspirations in their demos, there would be a few more Gigabyte of text on Scene.org :P

Well, what can I say. I absolutely LOVE this production, it's fucking brilliant. But I just fail to see how hard it can be to add proper credits for source material used. Especially as this thing HAS an endscroller with credits in it. So, TBL please save the scene from this kind of late disappointment about your releases in the future.

Ripping or not - see it from the other side: I like that song so much and it sticks in a way in my head that I'd even consider buying the cd of that singer. :-)
Plus the comparison with Timbaland doesn't make too much sense in my opinon. TBL take from a commercial product and win a couple of bucks at breakpoint with a well done remix. Timbaland earns hundreds of thousands of bucks by ripping of a non comercial musician.
Then again, intellectual property is intellectual property...
I don't care. Jag älskar sverige. And this production.

Right, FINALLY got this working. I've never been more frustrated by a delayed release, but patience finally won the day. I agree with Scamp that it's not hard to spread some credit, but I'm not particularly fired up by the 'appropriation' of extant source material. True, the use of commercially available music might weaken the moral foundations of the case against Timbaland and future copyrapists, but then we all know that the demoscene is a gathering of individuals, not an incorporation of ideological subscribers. Anyway, that's a discussion for the Bulletin Board.

The whole point of this demo, really, is that when you hold the PSP inches from your face with the brightness turned up, watching a demo that's better than anything you've previously seen on the platform (including all the shit games available for it), you're reminded WHY you spent all that money on it. You bought the PSP because it's a fairly sexy-looking portable media device with amazing battery life and a beautiful screen. Pretty, perfect, pink and purple shapes with beautiful lighting and nice, cheesy (and completely appropriate) music...this would sell the PSP to me if I didn't already have one. And while I'm only a lowly musician, I reckon that doing something aesthetically satisfying and impressive with a hardware platform, even if it's not at the cutting edge of artistic expression and originality, must be close to the heart of the scene ethos. So my thumb is for Suicide Barbie doing EXACTLY what it sets out to do - offer good looking images and pleasant-sounding audio on a computer. Hooray!

Oh, and as NoIRC exemplifies with his youtube vid, the framerate is completely bang-on with a 3.03 PSP - even from my new 'Sony' 4Gb memory stick (which is quite blatantly a fake, and much slower than my SanDisk card). So all those FPS detractiors, who were probably right to be suspicious considering it took two weeks for evidence of the REAL demo to appear, can be satisfied that what we saw at Breakpoint was just as it seemed.

So, about the demo. I don't mind them plucking ideas from other sources, I do agree those sources should have been credited. Even with those timbalandisms, it's still fairly original compared to many other demos. Bonus points for the only demo worth watching on psp.

rulez added on the 2007-04-18 19:52:33 by sang-soo sang-soo
Holy fucking crap, amazing looking demo. Even though the animation is limited, the simulated global illumination technique in some of the scenes is incredible looking, especially at that smooth framerate. Loved the circle-effect 3D face as well, it was a reasonable realtime approximation of a complex effect seen in a TV commercal, and the colors selected were great.

I don't understand the uproar about the music. OK, they did kind of a remix, but it seems like all they took from the original is some of the voice track. Their version sounds significantly better too, to the point that it just sounds like a completely different song.

Theme with naked and posed barbie dolls has been done several times before in the photography, big deal, are they supposed to credit every photographer that did that before them? (I know of at least few, hell I personally know one guy who did that kind of photos!)

It was a bit of a problem to make it work, the folder structure is not set up correctly in the archive (it's explained somewhere in this thread though) and it needs an unofficial fix again posted in this thread to make it work on OE firmware PSP.

Awesome demo, I just hope they release a compressed music version, 120MB is really a bit of an overkill, but 95MB of that is uncompressed music alone.

warp, this is the best PSP demo, but not the only one worth watching - check out Flower by Moppi production (it's a PC port, but still)

I was about to thumb it up right away but decided to wait for the binaries to see it on real hardware and now I'm very glad I waited.
Almost all the content is ripped, even the (simple but stylish) dot-head effect i liked the most. And the 105MB executable with streaming PCM music is a real joke, especially for a portable platform.

Size of production was not a main area of focus for a party version. Compressed audio support (along with other fixes, like support for different firmwares, credits, etc) is done for final release. However official release is delayed, until we have new music (as requested by BP organizers).

PS: And yes, we _knew_ about ME support for Atrac3. But, plz, bare in mind, that production is done on a homebrew SDK - it definetly adds some complexity to some trivial problems :)

I can only believe what I'm reading because I know this is pouet.

If I model myself in 3D in a demo, have I ripped from myself? Or from God? Or from my parents? Suppose I use a picture for reference. Have I ripped from fucking Kodak?

Let's take a step back. It's the mid-90's and I run my hand-scanner over two images of models' faces then perform some graphicistic pixel-by-pixel wizardry on them to turn them into something suitable for a mid-demo still. I'm not going to credit the original photographer (EVEN if he was credited in the magazine I tore the page from) because, well, that would be fucking stupid in the context of the demo. Not to mention the fact that my art has become something distinct and separate by virtue of the new medium and the work I've done on it.

Just like modelling some barbie dolls.

Then I took 15-seconds of vocal samples TO INFLUENCE AN ENTIRELY NEW PIECE OF MUSIC. Lock up Grandmaster Flash and throw away the fucking key!

Jesus Christing fuck. If you want to take ART into the back yard and shoot it in the head, shoot yourself while you're at it.

This is not Timbaland. This is a demo.

ReJ, please make an 'unofficial' final release that will have this same music that party version has, just have it compressed and bugfixed and whatnot.

There's plenty of people who just want to have cool music in the demo and don't care how many seconds was sampled from the source song, if it's more seconds than the rules of the sampling allow or not...

The way you worded your post with "final" and "official" releases, makes me hopeful this is something you already have in mind.

syphus: FWIW, when I do the kind of pixel work you mention, I always put the name ( and eventually the URL ) of the original.

Suicide Barbie is Timbaland in that, that almost every scene is a carbon copy of non-scene productions without a single credit although there is plenty of room to give said credits in the end scroll instead of that usele^Wplaceholder text.

Also, all big parties reject entries that contain copyrighted materials unless the submitter provides some evidence that he/she obtained the permission to use them.
added on the 2007-04-20 03:43:53 by p01 p01
No. A slideshow containing carbon copies of each single photograph of mass-produced, commercially available Barbie dolls made by the relevant 'Suicide Barbie' photographer would be Timbaland. What we have here is a combination of influence, imitation, appropriation, technical aptitude, transcension of the original medium, art direction and presentation.

Suppose TBL model Mount Everest; something that's been photographed many times in the last century for 'non-scene productions' - by your reasoning this would be entirely invalid. Those previous photographs might have been sensitively and painstakingly shot over the last century by artistically-minded photographers, who spent a long time choosing their subject and awaiting the right lighting conditions etc. TBL may never have seen Mount Everest with their own eyes - indeed they might use these photographs as points of reference, by which they can envisage something that ALREADY EXISTS, which by virtue of its pervasion of our collective cultural psyche is essentially public domain. It's only because the Barbie Doll is such an easily-recognisable commodity that the original Suicide Barbie photographer was able to create a work with any cultural currency whatsoever. If he made some clay figurines and showed them appearing to commit suicide, his work would have only limited artistic and social resonance.

Aside from the whole issue of propriety where the referencing of source material is concerned, it has to be said that Suicide Barbie, the demo, does not exclusively contain 'carbon copies' - or at least carbon copies of the mises-en-scene, which is what I suspect people really mean. Enough directors have referenced Godard's dreadful Weekend long-shot with only a slight shift in medium, subject matter or other points of technicality to remind us that if an artistic domain is shared sensitively (ie with the use of proper attribution in credits, against whose absence I won't argue) then influence and cross-pollenation can exist fruitfully.

I've already used two tenuous analogies in this thread, and I'd think twice about using a third were it not for the fact that many people are drawing the Timbaland comparison, which already straddles some serious technical distinctions:) So please allow me to jump on the bandwagon:

IF TIMBALAND WAS INFLUENCED BY THE SUICIDE BARBIE PHOTOS, HE WOULD HAVE:
* Bought some Barbie dolls, a blender, a bizarrely shaped meat-grinder of some sort, some knives and assorted toy weapons
* Bought a camera
* Got one of his flunkies to arrange the - no, no, no...

Wrong, he would have just fucking lifted those photos off the web, opened Photoshop and then drawn some moustaches on the dolls to disguise them. Because THAT is effectively what he did to Tempest's tune - he laid a simplistic hip-hop beat and some Nellie Furtado vocals over it to disguise it slightly.

So to tease this analogy to breaking-point (no pun intended), let's imagine that TBL used the Timbaland mode of 'creativity' when making Suicide Barbie:

* Steal photographs
* Draw moustaches
* Code slideshow
* Release!

Now that's not what happened, is it?

By the way, I totally agree on all credits-related issues. It's one thing to forget on the day, but it's worrying that nobody from TBL has spoken up properly to clarify this. It'd be nice to know for sure what's what. Sorry for the long post.

kb_: I think the resemblance between this demo and loreal ad might be a coincidence. Not to many artists make their own fonts these days, they rather use standard sets. So when two artists will use the same fonts independently they overall look may be the same. Moreover - is the commercial advert market so interesting and inspiring? Also that bubble chocolate advert. The idea is so old and easy to implement that it's sad, that it's not allowed to use it anymore. Trust me that the chocolate advert is not the first that was using that effect. Last year on ICM I was showing the process of generating cloud shapes from 3d models of people faces. I assume that I'll need to bring a prove like timestamps or an eyewitness before releasing our next prod (furtunately iq and Navis was there :P but that's not the point). The real problem is that I start to think before using any simple ideas. I think that people will start to point out some similarities between our demo and ie "Debris" or this one. And in a worst case when you already have sth like 70% of your production and someone will release a demo with similar ideas to the one you haven't finished yet it means tha you must throw everything to a bin. Well it seems this way.
keops: your latest production which I like a lot reuses tons of already invented effects. It's easy to find similarities to some old productions from various platforms. But that's not the point. I think that you made what you really like and not because you like those effects in prod A, B and C. So I think it's time to finish this witch hunting process.

As for the prod: it works really nice on my PSP :), yeah the music ripping sucks, but it works prfectly with this prod. Try to get a permission from this babe rather than producing entirely new track :)

bonzaj: my comment was meant humorously, I perfectly know why I haven't given this demo any thumb so far. :)

Apart from that - yes, it may be a coincidence, but then the sheer frequency of such coincidences (Louie's demo design "found" in some commercial ad or hi-res stuff before) looks more than a strong correlation.

Since I acquired a PSP now I could actually watch it on the real deal, and my earlier concerns that the video was not indicative of real world performance was put to shame - it runs great and looks fantastic!
Those overbright/bloom like 3D scenes are just amazing, well, actually the whole demo is. Fantastic code, the best handheld demo so far.
The only bad thing is that it set the bar so high for PSP demo that I anything I ever manage to code on the PSP will not be worthy of a release even...

hitchhikr: well, the old version did run just fine on my PSP, only skipping frames a few times
added on the 2007-07-26 20:20:01 by britelite britelite
I tested on my 2 psps with sony brand mc on both and both had slowdown, the gibberish about having fast memory card to obtain constant framerate was lame to begin with.
Doing streaming from the psp memory card is incompetent anyway.

And of course without the lyrics it have much less impact or appeal.
added on the 2007-07-26 20:43:17 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
Sony MS Duo cards are fairly shit, hitchhikr - I get MUCH slower access times on my 4Gb Sony MSD than on my 1Gb Sandisk.

But aside from that, I've not had slowdown on my PSPs (using both Sandisk andSony cards to test), nor has anyone to whom I've forwarded the original release of the demo.
added on the 2007-07-26 20:58:14 by syphus syphus
High speed mcs (even the sony's one) are not provided with the psp, i'm talking about the standard ones (PRO duo nowadays).
added on the 2007-07-26 21:11:16 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
Well yeah, non-Pro cards don't fit in the PSP - my mistake. But I too was talking about the standard Memorystick Pro Duo cards. No slowdown on either, despite the Sandisk one being faster than the (only a month-old) Sony one.
added on the 2007-07-26 22:12:49 by syphus syphus
hitchhikr: there is always room for improvement

however next time we probably will invest more time in making demo run slower to make some ppl happy

Where else do you propose they stream from?
Just do a demo without ripping commercial stuff for a change and that'll be fine.

Somehow that micro affair remembers me the racers of the tour de France and other athletes using extra means to boost their performances in competitions, no surprise if others can't stand a chance.

No hard feelings, just tell me that the demoscene isn't becoming (or has already become) an amusement park for the gaming industry bozos using professional infrastructures/knowledge to produce demos & i'll believe you.

pete: who said they should be streaming ?
added on the 2007-07-27 01:02:43 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
very nice polished final! you can see the hard work invested in it. the new mix is also well done and fitting.
and it works like a charm on my 1.5 psp.. no framedrops etc..
hitch: jealous? i think this version had also easily won any console compo yet.
added on the 2007-07-27 09:55:03 by v3nom v3nom
I just notice an industrialization of the means to produce demos and while it surely brings some good to a small minority of people, i'm not sure that it'll be beneficial to the demoscene in general.

There's an increase of the level of skills required to produce anything decent nowadays (also due to the afore mentioned reason) which apparently scares a lot of people away.
I assume a lot of them are left aside being reduced to cheering supporters (or with no other solution than using the demotools thrown away by the big ones).

Finally i notice that some people can get away with just anything (even if it involves ripping commercial material) while other can't, maybe i'm jealous about that :)

I'm not convinced that the shit-faced clowns demo wouldn't have won against that final version.

TBL, you guys should consider putting a compressed old music file here on this msg. board for the few of us to use. Sort of an unofficial/official release if you will. Or can I just compress the old WAV into Atrac3? Is the timing of new song the same?

hitchhikr, the final version is better and more polished than the old one, except for the music, I suppose (the whole uproar about music was total BS to begin with, IMO). If I was seeing this for the first time, and not 101st time, there's no doubt I'd be as floored as I was when I first saw it months ago.

No frameskips at all on my PSP btw, but I don't remember seeing any on the party version either.
This rocks.
They managed to turn an average piece of music into the greatest.

Do someone have a link to (a video with) the "final" music - would like to compare with the original.

PS: Don't think that anyone has mentioned that if you download the party version, you get a wav-file of the full music - i.e. that is not cut when the scroller ends. :-)

I have PSP 3004 with ChickHEN. It works there fine.

Thanks Factor6 :D

Alas this does not work on my 3003 660-ProC
It doesn't work on my PSP 3004 with CFW 6.20. Pity :(
So it seems that it only works with ChickHEN.

Also, anyone still got the original party version? All links seem dead.

Despite the stealing/remixing of music and ideas, this is still great entertainment. :)

You kidding me, I forgot to thumb this up? Remixing pop to make demo soundtracks... hm...well if you can do that you can make your own songs?

But I can say this prod is excellent, just... excellent and pure entertainment, *great* art direction, no wonder it won :D

Could someone please provide binaries for the slim version? Doesn't have to be the original archive if you just have it on your PSP, though that would be preferred.

Nice audio and visuals, but I feel the visuals twists the meaning of the "Dumpa Mig" lyrics.

This is pure fun.

Really great stuff. Though a lot was "ripped" from commercial things. Anyway, considering the theme of the demo that was probably inevitable. :]

Platform thumb.
