Scroller is much too fast and the text looks very bad with all those glitches. Otherwise somewhat ok remake of the classic Skid Row intro.

Absolutely unwatchable here, ever heard of vsync?

At least this one worked fine and was 4kb: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=16332

"Another lightspeed release"....=).
Appartently, there is an interesting story behing the original supply of Lemming game to SR dudes on Amiga. I know some rumours about releasing before a retail and +, but never new were they true or not...

For intro. It is OK, never the less the scroll chars are too small imo for this screen resolution.
added on the 2007-01-31 17:22:04 by sim sim
sad that the scrolltextwriter didnt recognise that only lcase chars could be used! ;P for those 'unwatchable fast' dudes... just config your gfxcard to let vsync be application-controlled! lame, i know!

I prefer seeing these kind of intros watching on my amiga or c64 and not my dual core multimedia hyperspeed-are-u-nuts pc.

It's 2007...plz improve. :-/

It's smooth and ok here, though yes, the scroller could be timed a little slower. And I've seen more interesting "oldschool" demos in the past.

aLpHa oNe & ikstar: seriously, can't you guys open your eyes and handle criticism just ONCE?!?

You took a famous cracktro from 1991 that ran perfectly on some 7.14MHz machine and you made it look totally bad 16 years later on 2GHz machines.
Not to mention that Scarab guys already made a nice remake in 4kb on amiga.

What did you seriously expect? What you did was everything but oldskool, I'm sorry.

My definition of Oldskool is not about cloning old cracktros and make them look bad on machines that run 300 times faster, sorry.

I do like nice oldskool cracktros and a lot of people on Pouet also do. But this prod you posted is NO oldskool cracktro.

I can handle criticism... but its always the same here on pouet! - It can be done on a 7 Mhz machine (believe me, i can do it too, did that a dozen times in the ninetees), it runs too fast on my machine (change gfx card settings), it can be even smaller (who cares, its 22 kb) ... Take a look at the original SR intro... you will notice the scroller is also FAAST! It was just a quick remake to do some of my friends a favour, and they liked it a lot ... this was not done for you 'supereffect' addicted demo guys! Btw. i remember dozens of demos here that did not work or even start on my machine.. perhaps i should take some time to thumb down all of them... like you do in your free time !
added on the 2007-01-31 23:19:51 by aLpHa oNe aLpHa oNe
1. Did I give this prod a thumb down? -> No

2. You produce stuff already seen 16 years ago, only you make it much worse for no reason. You don't seriously expect people to congratulate you, do you?

3. You try to fool people with the holy "Oldskool" label. This prod does not qualify Sir.

"You're not oldskool you don't understand nothing"

Yes, probably...
added on the 2007-01-31 23:23:59 by keops keops
goddamnit.. do something with alpha blending, 3D, bump + displacement maps, softsynths, growing tubes, realtime shadows.... just don't do this, okay? even in 1992 there were demotools that allowed you to make stuff like this in a few minutes.. sorry..

i tried it and it worked, but it's definitely not worth watching again..

Wow, thanks for that one. So I should have been on Amiga since 1911 (pun intended) to be oldschool enough for you? Anyway, if you can't stand any feedback/criticism you should not release anything at all, as simple as that! Calling everyone bloody n00b who dares to criticise your intro doesn't make your intro any better at all...

keops : have i ever shown in that thread that i was not able to handle criticism? I dont think so, kthx. Puting a thumbs UP for a cracktro is something i always do, cause i love cracktros (except that fucked up IRRM one i added some weeks ago :) and cause i love alpha one's work, whatever he says on a prod's thread. Now, if thumbing up a prod is considering himself as a guy who cant handle criticism, you just showed me that i dont understand anything to life nor to pouet.
added on the 2007-02-01 01:43:10 by iks iks
And about that sentence i told about the trolls, it was not ment to Stingray (look at your query on irc bro :) nor to you Keops, nor to anyone who doesnt want himself to be considered as a troll. It was ment in a general way, to make alpha one understand that replying in a prod's thread aint the solution, and that pouet users will always have something to say about what you said, whatever is being told on whatever topic. That's pouet. Nothing more, nothing less, now, if you had some advices on how to get that cutie in my bed and how to manage my feelings towards her, i'd be more than happy to listen, but in the meantime, i'm off, good night, happy new year.

People will have different opinions, but to thumb down because of a card that had vsync disabled??? or to say you can't read the scroll because your refresh rate is too fast?

It ran fine for me btw. It's a real pain in the ass to code for people who fuck around with the vsync settings on their cards, you should re-enable sync and look again, this is an almost perfect conversion of the classic cracktro by Dan of Anarchy and just for the nice feelings it brings it's worth both thumbs up for me.

Another thing about making a product that has some sort of sine scroll inside it, you need vsync enabled. 3D hardware accelerated stuff looks great with no vsync and delta timing, but it is nearly impossible to code something like this without the scroll looking choppy if there is no sync.

This is not a rant, I just feel that some of you are missing out on seeing an excellent conversion as it should be. There aren't enough people keeping the olschool spirit alive in the scene any more...

another scene drama @pouet...mostly by people doing nothing...of course we can love/hate/ignore a production, of course we can thumb up/thumb down a prod without even checking it (I bet a LOT of people here does not even check the prod itself...)...but why the hell does it end in a conflict when people do not agree with each others?? (I'm not speaking about that particular production but about comments here in general)

It's a remake of an existing amiga cracktro, so, why did you expect anything else?
The real question is "does is it match the original one?" Yes, it does!

There are soooo many reason why a prod can be thumbed down, there is always a "good" reason to do so...what about thumbing down all prods that has no mac conversion from now? silly, no? there are comments here with the same level...
Holy fuck Alpha! next time, you have consider to use dx3! damn...think about the poor fellows here, having a top PC but still using dx3...for some weird and unknown reasons...these are the real oldschoolers...doing nothing, leaving in the past...

Works ok on my machine and looks okayish, so no thumb down ;)

But seriously, what's up with the funked up font? Didn't you actually bother to watch the intro even once after writing the texts? And even if the font only includes chars for lowercase, it's not that bloody hard to code a writer that can handle both lower- and uppercase in the text...
added on the 2007-02-01 12:11:22 by britelite britelite
How hard is it to filter out uppercase chars (or rather convert them to lowercase) if you don't have them in your font? That for the people who speak about quality here...

Cracktro actually DO belong here, no doubt.

Hitchhikr, StanZ, Lotek, Havoc, Stingray and I uploaded tons of oldskool (yes, the word 'oldskool' is relevant in that sentence, not in yours) cracktros those last months.

People here appreciate GOOD cracktros. Now, if you submit mediocre revamped/buggy stuff, accept their comments and disappointment.

I dig old-fashioned cakes made with good old recipes but I don't like them anymore once you let them rot in a corner of the kitchen and if you stepped in it. They kind of lose their former appeal.

Yesterday I compared this version with original one and here are my points:

1. The scroll is faster in original,
2. The starfield is smoother in Hatred version,
3. Switching between windows provokes "Another lightspeed release" area permanent dissappering in Hatred version,
4. Fonts are too small in Hatred (both of them)
5. The SR size is 15o48 against Hatred 22752.
6. and some other small remarks.

So whaddaheck are you talking about here? Too fast blablabla... Too big... blablabla... I am surely not for overusing an "oldschool" word, as it nowadays, is by these guys who try too be more old (without good school) then they are in fact. But this production do has some oldschool spirit..

You do not like this one because, as I suppose, you wanna see crackintros which look like 64k intros. Am I right? True, they are great, but well... It's not an idea in crack intro origin. And as A1 said (if it is true ;) - it was made on his fellows ask.

Back in the days ppl code for pleasure, now if you do so, following sth already existing, the others will surely will not be content.
And for the end, check this(unavailable here) or this one. And?...
added on the 2007-02-02 14:59:26 by sim sim
The idea can be good, but I expected more originality and/or more quality, for example doing a "today-remake" of that intro, I mean the same but with effects using recent technologies and a cover of the music with better sounds, more voices, etc...

well, and to be honest, I did better than that in Javascript on www.chiptune.com...
sucks added on the 2007-02-02 15:54:43 by rez rez
lol to be honest rez, not really! but you are just one of them who doesnt understand that a conversion surely has NO better effects than the original... it shall look like the original, and if i watch this intro next to my amiga monitor with the original sr cracktro running, it looks identical!

Oh yes, sure, identical, once you forget about the graphical bugs and the fucked up speed. And still, even if it were, congrats for making a sinescroller using DX9 in 2007, WOW!!! The original author of this cracktro would be proud of you!

added on the 2007-02-02 16:47:07 by aLpHa oNe aLpHa oNe
aLpHa oNe: I uploaded it because I actually do like it for nostalgia reasons. What I didn't like were the glitches in the text (not your fault I know but it was released like this) and that the scroller was a bit too fast, thus I didn't give thumb up. I actually have nothing against such conversions and don't expect them to have any advanced routines in the remake. But you should at least try to understand people who don't like such things and thus give thumb down. Live and let live I'd say.
