Only PS 2.0 prod. > Waiting for DiVX.....
added on the 2005-07-31 01:55:33 by Trauma Zero
Screenshot looks breathtaking, but I'll be waiting for the DIVX too.
My most sincere congratulations. The future is now! ASD
one of the *best* demos ever made. i still have shivers down my back from the compo!
Totally out of this world. There seems to be so much work put on this, the thing keeps going on and on and on...
Excellent music -I love the magic duo :)-, great visuals and insane effect show.
You did it again, congratulations.

I was eagerly waiting for this demo and it was totally worth it. This is now my favourite, thanks for all the hard work, it was a pleasure to watch. The music was also fantastic.
kickass
I don't know what to say, incredible!
Just perfect. Congratulations.
it's.... quite good! :) *amazing* love the tune also!
A quick video version is available from this url http://amv.demoscene.gr/asd_iconoclast.avi
Holy Fuck!!
Breathtaking. No further comments needed.
i rarelz seen such a bloated and overloaded demo like this. there would have been material in there for at least 4 much more coherent demos. sorrz, i can*t really understand the hype about this one. there is no common theme, the colorchoice is not coherent and even the music is a weird mix of styles. why overload a demo like that is a mystery to me.
i'm really tempted to thumb this down actually, last not least because it totally riuned my perception of the whole compo, but there is obviously much much effort put into this one and the single scenes are quite beautiful indeed.

Firstly, thanks Zafos for the video. Secondly, thanks ASD for one of the most amazing demo experiences since I became a PC owner.
I'm a bit disappointed I had to watch it via video, but it totally warrants the hardward it uses and I have no complaints about that. If only all next generation demos looked this fabulous!
A masterpiece! I'm really blown away!

one of the best pc-demos I have ever seen.
http://amv.demoscene.gr/asd_iconoclast.avi avi... not sure how long it will last though.. ;)
a great demo from ASD.
great design and good music.
great design and good music.
ALiEN's head is swimming. ;)
Buffer overrun, too much action error...
And the music is exhausting to some extent (high e-guitar).
But:
I got a mighty machine and Iconoclast is one of the very few demos that are really able to use resources this wise.
Design, visuals and code are incredibly striking. WOW!
All 12 ALiENthumbs up!

Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!
And unlike Planet Risk, this thing runs smooth as silk on my machine.

Awesome, didn't think they could top Planet Risk, but they did - and with some margin too I might add. Also, once again kudos for their brave, untraditional soundtrack choices. Pure style.
I also really was wondering how ASD was going to top Planet Risk, but with this demo, they have. Design, music, visuals, all excellent. The flow is nice and it runs smooth as silk.. though so does Planet Risk on my machine. I will say that Planet Risk is still a very strong production in its own merit. Iconoclast has a different feel, but it's all ASD and it's all awesome!
Oh, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned the little tribute to Future Crew in there.. Was I the first to recognize the piece from Second Reality?
I hope no one mentioned the FC / Nooon homages because they're so obvious. :-) But definitely a hand-clapping nice touch. Yes, this is a great one.
A few scenes are missing elements on my GeFroce 6600 GT. Comparing to the video, that tube with a bunch of holes in the side is not there (but the yellow particles are), there's some random flickering throughout, and I don't see fatFace at all.
Still, stunning demo. Congratulations!

Just a note, I watched the video as well and it looked exactly the same as it did on my 6600GT. I am running the NVidia release driver 77.72. P4 3.2ghz, 1G ram, XP.
it cant't go much better than this
ASD did it again!!! They let everyone speechless.
Navis did you ever fall into any huge boiling marmite?
You got it people!!! Amazing Soundtrack amusic and levi scored!!!! amv and ch3 kicked butt and navis OMG...I have no words...Respect and worship to Andromeda Software Development

*pro* well i liked transitions, and it was going on all the time. maybe not my cup of tea, but good, and deserved winner, if it going to win.
I have to say that doesn't have the quality, timing, flow of planet risk, some scenes are quite boring, nothing happening, some cameras are v bad.. but hey! the transitions are still there, and again are great!
The music is v original, and the part of second reality was v shocking, tho I missed a bit more references on that part, after stars one the camera does nothing..
Thumbs up ovbiously, but again, I expected a instant classic again.

Absolutely stunning, winner for sure!
I think one can safely add 'ranked 1st' to this demo, it doesn't have any decent competition...
(I got it working fine. Had to disable secondary monitor.)
as always... wow
Well... uhmmm... errr... what a demo... again :o
Incredible effects, amazing music, transitions, graphics, everything... I agree with dipswitch, the demo is overloaded, and I think the music is too chaotic (as usual with asd :). But, god... there're some scenes, like the greetings one, the initial music, the... congratulations for such a piece of art :)

BEAUTIFULL!!!!!! What a beauty. What a beast of a demo. Nice one ;-) I just wonder if ASD will ever change their style and stun us with something quite different in the future.. Thumps up!
WICKED SICK!
k-donk.. that's the sound of my jaw hitting the floor!
urgh, a bit too much of everything
there's a point where complexity becomes too much for the viewer - asd (and especially the music) is now standing on that fine red line, happily flipping off both sides. i expected more moshability for the music but i guess i'll get used to it sooner or later. massive props for, as kb said during the demo, "achieving that every 20 seconds you have to wonder where the fuck am i".
It ran silksmooth on my PC and what a BLAST!!! The best demo i have seen, i have always loved ASD demo but i couldnt imagine that it could get so damn good.
I love this style, so damn good choice of colors and lovely effects all over.
Now i hope ASD really get 1st place at Assembly :)

Wonderful demo , wow ..
Very massive product, but doesn't add much to last year's demo. One of the best demos of the year so far.
master thumbs up, im thinking if i've ever seen anything even nicer than this (including my naked model ex-gf : )
the music is extraordinary, the demo composition is great.. you just don't know what to look at first, there are so much pretty things on the screen in the same time..

Perhaps perfect.
I happen to like imperfections (: so to me, this is something I'd like to leave as ASD's style, and see folks have fun developing their own.

2 words, MAD SHIT! though the wow-factor was less then Planet risk, its absolutely stunning, i love the flawless transitions and a good overdose of ps2.0 fx... musicwise, gimme deathmetal next time !! this guitarrock is too cheesy for me =)
The "flow" part was nice with the cubes and music.
The usual ASD.. Pretty and colourful mass of blurry hyperglowing visuals, nice transitions, no sense of style whatsoever. I guess it's like the new year fireworks, not bad when seen once a year but any more would be excessive. Sorry, this just isn't for my taste. Great music though.
Makes everything else look dated and puny.
insane :)
here's the obligatory thumb up. great demo, guys!
omg, i'm definitely fan! awesome demos guys!
amazing...
great music and style
video here http://amv.demoscene.gr/asd_iconoclast.avi
blue7: thanks for the tip, I had the same problem here too
trace : imho this IS an instant classic ;D
wow
wow
And it goes on..., and on..., and on... :-)
Oh shit... this is just amazing!
btw. music sucks
btw. music sucks
v3nomsoup: I don't think so, too long and the flow is not good enought in some parts.. the end for example.. is boring, the scene with the robots, sharks, and credits.. it does have other awesome scenes.. but, i'm not going to watch it more times that I watched planet risk.
watched this over assembly TV during the compo... and my jaw dropped again and again. naturally the orgas showed this one last. a clear winner it is! lots and lots of nicely polished content. and the music was interesting too, giving many different moods in the demo. what can I say? Just awesome work guys!
Technically and musically speaking, this is one of the best things i have seen until now. Sometimes, in some scenes, the music evolves but the visuals continue with smooth camera movements, and this could make decay the wow effect depending of the profile of the people watching it
Anyway, don't forget that exactly that is one of the things that define the style of this marvelous people combination
Simply grandious :)

"Hey guys look at all the shiny stuff we made for ASM during the last year! It'll only take a short while!"
Some of the scenes are absolutely brilliant and the transitions are slick. However, I second dipswitch in the complete and utter lack of coherence on the whole.

after over a decade, demos are finally more impressive than games again :) Good stuff!
probably the most impressive pc demo i've ever seen, however, i thought the music was totally ill fitting.
However, ASD productions have TOO much in common.
i got bored big time while watching this,
but best code anyway.. oh yes, the demotune sucks a lot! tehkäähän välillä oikeita demoja..

what the guy above me said. the finnish part also.
great visual & music, as your last prods.
really great transitions, as your last prods.
i enjoy to see clearly some 3d scenes in this one.

The now usual "let's use as much shaders as we can, it's free" ASD's recipe & as cheesy as usual (some well thought scenes, tho).
I just have to admire you guys because you have the stamina to do such massive and long demos with loads and loads and loads and loads of stuff. This one had stuff worth at least 3 or 4 demos.
But... As far as i can see this is only Planet Risk 2, bringing nothing new to the table. High-contrast scenes with loads of light-effects and glow indeed work very well and look beautifull, but you should try to renew yourself once in a while. I'm willing to forgive you this time, but don't do it again ;)

Awesome. A bit too GPU heavy in some parts, but awesome :-)
you guys _rock_
I don´t believe my eyes. You greek guys always ruled. But this production give me strong punch into head. With this quality demos you can win every demoparty you want.
Other asm2005 prods are like jokeprods comparing with this beuatifull scene dream.
THANK YOU !

insane amount of detail and fantastic code/visuals symbiosis.
only major flaw for me is the pacing. some scenes simply don't catch the motion of the music, thus violating the otherwise great flow of the experience.
music, as always, is controversial. maybe the same style with a slightly more obvious climax would create an even more intense atmosphere? but i guess the music will grow on me after watching a few hundred times anyway :)

loads of glowing/tech/polybashing/morping stuff going on and it looks awesome. but with the music, the theme and storyboard.. somehow this thing doesn't move me at all.. sorry.
i like it
that's by far the best demo for a long, long time. just beautiful.

People probably know that I'm usually a fan of simpler, even "outdated" demo designs. However I've been a big fan of ASD's demos for several years now and I always knew they'd be #1 at Assembly for some day.
The music is not my cup of tea really, but it gives the demo an original fresh feeling and contributes to the atmosphere. I also like the way they included some traditional Greek music (can't remember the name of the instrument) in the soundtrack.
I can't wait to try the 3D glasses.

suhteellisen jaa.
silky smooth transitions between scenes (as per usual), and consistent (and very elaborate ;) colour scheme used. all this adds to a nice presentation. it's just that I've seen all this before in a very identical form by you guys...
I guess thats it then, huh?
Lets just close down the demoscene now. Last man to leave, take the lights.

nice demo. but it's just another ASD demo. same colormix, same music style, same transition technique.
but nothing 'new' in there...
fake - plan for creating ASD demos:
-use cool meshes
-put some nice shaders'n'textures over them
-use sort of random camera movements
-overlay, overlay, overlay with random linesanddotsandtextures
-postprocess it
-if there is a transition in your timeline, mix those scenes together, use same camera movements, blur the buffers, fake the buffers and do some manual adjustments
-try to avoid content
-release it
just kidding ;) but pleaaaaaaaase do something more innovative now.

When something is this good you just don't have the heart to write down its flaws. But I think the last minute (with the cubes/sharks/fatface...or maybe the whole part starting from the hourglass - cause it really feels like a different demo) could have been easily left out, they just spoil the climax.
But goddamn guys you did it again... Now would be a good time to retire ;)
Massive thumbs up.

Massive thumbs up.
@everyone who blames the greek guys for being repetetive... where were your highly original and exceptionally creative entries? not at this compo I guess... 8)
ps: sure it lacks coherence big time, but given the weak compo it had to compete, it's a clear winner and a landmark demo as well (for its eclecticity at least)
The greek music at the beginning made me smile. The demo reminds me of Planet Risk, but this time with somehow nicer and a bit more clear visuals, especially after the middle (nice oldschool demo references). I am not sure whether I like Planet Risk or this one more. I think I am getting used to this massive ammount of effects in one screen and every time I watch an ASD demo, I tend to be more focused in order to understand what's going on. And this massive amount of code and art blends perfectly with this kind of music! I need to watch it thrice to get more of the visuals. And wth can I buy a set of 3d glasses?
i think you put demoscene to a really high level with it :) thanks
wow, this was.... cheap.
however, i do admire your stamina and some of the code seems quite neat, so I'll save this thumb down for the next time you release a mess of additive blended mediocre scenes with butt ugly overlays. sometimes less is more.

uhm, i'd like to add that this is atleast a much more worthy winner than last year.
hmm....
this is really so obviously good that there's no way to get around the "rulez" rating. still, the music did absolutely nothing for me, and the thing on the whole does seem very incoherent (though asd's trademark transitions save it).

Outstanding work. ASD is building a healthy reputation for beautiful and well-produced demos. The thing that gets you with this demo is how much hard work that seems to have been but down in the process of creating it. And that work has really paid off. Beautiful, well directed, and thoroughly planned. The fact that Navis is so down-to-earth and modest about his genius simply adds to the enjoyment.
Fantastic! Like 'tint' did nine years ago on amiga, just goes on and on and on with one part better than the other.
Just one added comment.. I loved this demo. It is a real treat to watch. The only thing that seemed to hurt the flow was the cut scene from where the first face was shown to the water/hallway scene. It seemed a little out of place. The rest really has a nice polished look, sound and feel.
Simply an amazing demo. As simple as that.
very delightful but a little overloaded
*squirt* *squirt*.. you just touch.. my.. tralalala.
Amazing, really blew me away. Planet risk is my favourite demo, but this looks better. I'll have to watch a few more times to really see, but as it stands, this is perhaps the best demo of all time for me. Congratulations!
Oh and just one more thing... It would have ruled big time if you had made the whole demo using greek music, not just the intro. But maybe next time ;)
One of the few reasons ( few but strong ) why we ( cocoon ) are still doing demos.
I did not really like it on streaming but the real time final result is a masterpiece. You made guille nearly cry ...

This demo really deserves the 1st place at ASM. Planet risk and Dreamchild also did.
ASD rules!
ASD rules!
respects from whole madwizards demoteam. this is the one of few demos you want to run and run and run again. great!
what dipswitch said.
I can't think of anything to add, but here's my thumb :)
jesus, it is sooo long...
The visuals and the transisitions are breathtaking. Althought the amount of work is evident, I like "planet risk" more. At first I hated the music, but after watching a hundret times, I was converted. Maybe the same will happen with Iconoclast.
A big extra-thumb for recognizing 16:10 ;-)

To put it in a nutshell: GREAT!
I'm speechless. I have no speech.
Dalí couldn't make it better.
Dalí couldn't make it better.
please stop it.
all that!
best demo in this kindof style ever. very impressive work.
just one thing, i hope it doesnt spawn a whole load of clones from other people.. that'll get boring pretty fast. :)

not my style at all. "let's do as many glowing particles as possible in as many colors as we can". ok for effort and nice 2d gfx.
it looked good, but you pushed it too much, didnt fit together good enough to rule as a demo, but the visuals are truly amazing. And music, dream theater inspired? :)
Never change a winning concept, eh? :)
Well, I loved just about everything in Planet Risk and this is a clear sequel, so it's kind of obvious I love this _almost_ as much. And I think amusic and leviathan should get best soundtrack from scene.org awards for their massive soundtrack in this one (should've got one from planet risk as well).
I wanna join the ASD fanclub :(

Just one word : RuleZ !
Just one word : RuleZ !
Simply AMAZING! loved the start and the music:)
Pretty much mindblowing. The soundtrack alone had been enough for me :P
brilliant. funny 2nd reality reference.
The soundtrack is just perfect in eclectism, and eclectism is what I like :)
The rest is beautiful and shows dedication, can only bow to that :)

this MASTERPIECE puts to shame every work of art locked in museums :D
Ok, I thought most demos would never be funny to watch two times in a row but this one really blew me away at the party, and the nicest thing to it was the homage to future crew :-)
What I think blew me away the most was the endless ride and the music, the second part of the demo beats the living crap out of most music today.
This makes visiting asm worth it alone.

excellent demo for the masses but with strong attitude.
The music is a real and excellent soundtrack. I would have prefered massive real drums rather than drumbox and a deeper sound "à la hollywood". But okay. That's fine.
One of the best demos I have seen so far in 15 years of demoscene.

Gorgeous. It really has a great overall feeling!
imho even better than planet risk
No comments needed. Excellent.
I don't like the picture of John the Baptist in the 2nd scene.
They should respect everyone's religion.

superb !
I love you guys! I especially enjoyed the music - outstanding!!
started off promising, a nice scene where you draw some crappy lines and lofted them.. otherwise rather booring 3d (exept for the skeletonfishes) mixed with glow..
tempted to press "sucks", but i can wait until some lamer thumbs it up because its technical superduperity.

Its Superduperity!
Superduperity! <3
ok
Beautiful!
didn't enjoy it...but i can see that it took work and it's still pretty slick
I heard several people say "not more, not more" as the demo went on at the competition. There was just such an overflow of good content matched with good music, that we had all capitulated after half the demo - and then you delivered twice as much again. Most impressive for me was the rotating fire-spitting "saw" style objects, the refraction planes with the bird behind them and also the clock (in the screenshot) which was a nice break from the abstract.
Top production - one of the most impressive I've seen since I started watching demos in 1988.

Don't like the music, but the productions seems pretty tight considering it's not a "professional" recording.
Anyhoo... the visual design...
Motherfuck.

wanna say thanks for the some of the best 8 minutes of demowatching i ever had. wow. :)
this was super-super-nice.. cool abstract stuff.. neat modelled stuff.. nice ideas (especially the hints to older demos!)..
GREAT!
GREAT!
I'd probably give it a thumb up if it wasn't so totally overrated by (almost) everyone.
what a trip! incredible visuals and transitions. my favourite scene: when the polaroids fly across the screen - wow!
the music is also great in many parts - especially when it comes to traditional greek, french or arabian stuff. the shop-soiled 8oies guitars are a bit overused in my opinion, but hey - i can live with them.
massive respect for all this effort!

thumb up... again
familiar ASD style. I didn't think the blood/war references fit into the colourful psychedelia. Still rulez for all the fat transitions and the great flow and effects overall.
It is demos like this that make me stick to making 4k intros. You are truly insane! :)
Who said the scene is dead? Hello? Hello?
amusic and lev, very nice music!
I have not been particularly fond of ASD's earlier work, far too messy for my taste.
This demo however, I just can't dislike. I can only agree with the simile someone posted earlier - it's like fireworks. And more like the entire fireworks factory exploding, effect upon effect attacking your retinas - and somehow it works, it actually looks good!
I also enjoyed the "find the references to old demos"-game. Since there's so much going on, you actually need to watch out for them.

thats an eyecandy
not really my cup of tea, but all in all it was very pretty. only spoiler was that "stars wonders of the world and second reality" -part.
beautiful massive work .... good use of the shaders its the best preview of the next generation of demos
Ruled the bigscreen and compo. Best thing is the transitions and the water effects with refraction.
Trivia: Navis told me the model in the screenshot is from an ancient "machine" found on a Mediterranean island and is thought to have been used to calculate the positions of the sun/moon/stars (did I remember it right, Navis?). Anyway, it's considered the first "computer".

Superb...
Fantastic!
This demo was like eating 6kg of candy.. there's a huge amount of very impressive stuff. The problem is that none of those killer effects felt like anything special since there was nothing else.
Thumbs up for the insane amount of work that must have gone into this demo.

Wicked awesome demo. I don't know what to change in it to make it better. Just awesome.
I liked it until the 'modern widescreen' section, but that's still a whole lot to like. Kudos!
Planet Risk v2
Cool ideas, cool effects..

i would happily waste some bandwidth for a higher quality video...
Fantastic :) Really great production... and Music rules Bigtime... please, much more of this :)
usually i find asd-demos kinda messy but this one just had too much beautiful content (both visually and musically) for me to ignore.
deserved to win.
deserved to win.
really good work
so fuckin' incredible! ASD foreva
i'm with dipswitch and shifter on this one. sometimes too much is just too much.
best demo ever, the transition between each scene is perfect and smooth, it is very long but since there are so many scenes it doesn't really get boring. Effects are used naturally, not like if they want to show off single effects, it is more like in a rendered movie (effects actually contribute to the scene and are not used just for show off).
This is just impressive! I think if the quality of each scene is as high as in this prod it CAN'T be "too much"! i beg you for more! :D
The video version should have a higher quality though :/

nice :) kinda funny that these days it is actually pcdemos that needs videocapture. not amigademos like before :)
technically impressive, nice ideas and very flowy, but visually somewhat ugly. music too rocky.
You just have to respect the insane amount of work that has obviously gone into this demo.
Quality.
Quality.
One of the masterpieces of modern demoscene.
wow. all scenes are very beautiful and the transitions between them are awesome as hell. although, there is no global "theme" the viewer can follow (others said it before already).
But i disagree saying it's a bad thing, it's a showoff of a lot of nice effects which have been composed very nicely. what more could you expect from a demo?
well, the music isn't really my taste, but it fits perfectly imho. next time, why dont you just not use a guitar? ;)

Plus:
- Navis uses vim! (as the .swp file in \gceffects shows :)
- Some source is there
- Lots of effects
Minus:
- Music
- Slow on my machine([email protected] & radeon 9600)
- Lots of effects with transitions do not a good demo make.
- The demo seems to be made to be a showcase for modern gfx cards and nothing else, no design, no anything
- Why placing the number of faces rendered on a machine which has open architecture? In a few words this will be a laughable number.
In fewer words:
Demos like these make me hate myself for being a part of the demo scene, and discourage me from coding anything on PCs (Ataris only here, PCs are for work and games)

now that IS quality!
I certainly don't have a problem with showing off modern gfx cards and ADS do that brilliantly, sod all those futuremark 'realistic' nature demos etc. :)
Music seemed a bit odd in places, maybe a little too long but overall a well deserved 1st place.
Planet Risk is still my fav.

ggn you are such ignorant that you could not recognise that the bee scene is a tribute to three of the best intros/demos ever made : Second Reality, Stars and Cyboman 2. Just watch this one : http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=301 and stop making a fool of yourself!

you'd have to see it to believe it! what a fucking brick
here are some morons... this demo is awesome. the transitions, the music, the style... just awesome.. anyone who thinks otherwise, get you ass whoopin' courtesey of me! ASD totally rocks, and it's so great that there are finally demos with guitar sounds. keep it up. i don't know how you can keep up the steady flow of releasing high quality productions... respect!
Really impressive visuals, transitions and of course awesome music :O
I seriously have no idea how anyone can bitch about the music. It's talent and skill that put together such a track. Theres programming, playing, changing time signatures, live instruments, midi, realtime keyboards, these guys just flat out rock. Sure beats all the other plonky plonky echoed resonant filtered techno junk we get spoon fed constantly.
The visuals and coding and gfx are all suberb as well. Of course it's just glowing objects and shaders and blah blah blah... Duh, they're using the same technologies and code everyone else is?! Just in a different, interesting and very stylistic way.
They don't need me to defend against the haters, it speaks for it's own, but it's nice to openly point out that I see it for what it is, and respect it wholy. Doesn't hurt that I actually like it to boot. Keep it up fellas.

it was very impressive on the big screen, my breath was taken away waiting for "what they will show next"... ah yes, that tubular/conical flower-o-lights... probably just etched in my memory :D.. best greetings to you guys :)
great music
uh, planet risk is still my fav too btw :P
Wow, I love this demo!! Music wasn't my type either, but dang very pretty!!
Superb!!!
I'd loved transitions, effects, and MUSIC!!! maybe the best demo i've ever seen...
... let's see it again!! god! i'm in love with a demo!!!

A lot of effort and talent there, d00ds.
locks down at the end (0% cpu usage, win2003, gt6600). it supposedly took immersive amount of work to be finished, but i've got the feeling you guys overused the transitions and the music is way too chaotic for me. (like if the musician could not find a good note for the demo, and skipped from one idea to another). in other words, nicely designed, but still not my place of the dish. sorry.
well, i wouldnt call this one a masterpiece, but still its good and solid one.
(I definitively prefer Iconoclast to PlanetRisk)
Well, I probably love this demo for the exact same reasons why some others don't like it.
GGN: You makes me feel pity for you, fortunately you are not representative of the ATARI demo scene.
I like it because it is so full of everything that you can't figure at out all there is on one single view. So many morphing things, external references, but all not as some said "all blured in additive blending". No, you can definitively see it all (or change your video card and drivers :p).
Some says there is no main theme, or that too much is too much, but I see it like a kind of dream, a cadavre-exquis where parts are related only by the transition, making it a cool game to try to imagine what will be coming next considering what we currently have (like the ride along the "lines" that happens to be flowers queues...).
And I love the music too.
The only part I don't really like is the end thing with the "apes".
Great work from ASD, and definitively happy they got the reward for what I think is a long succession of great but badly ranked demos :)

gadzooks!
i dont like the music at all!! and the demo is ok..
simply rulez
Excelent music, and it just looks and feels damn good.
dbug: I have to second those words!
I wonder if it would be possible to get a version with a resolution switch..? I think it might look _even_ better in 1024x768, and at least the compo version runs without a hitch on my machine.
Yeay give us a 1024x768 version!! cewl!!
Navis: I read about the Antikythera. Cool and interesting stuff! But is the model in the demo an exact copy of the machine? There seems to be more and bigger wheels in some of the pictures.
Have you seen the real device (in a museum) or the replica?

To clarify a bit my posts (as most flame wars usually start over misunderstandings):
This is not a personal attack at asd or anyone. It's just my views on demos, and well, since asd's demo was the winning one at asm 05, I only watched that one from the entire compo (yes I know, but I still only have a feeble 56k modem at home).
For some reason, most PC demos really bore me to tears and usually don't watch them till the end. My first post reflected some of this (maybe a bit too aggresively? Apologies for those who felt offended. I just felt frustrated for DLing something over modem only to find out that I didn't like at all).
I could go on and on, but bottom line: Keep creating people, I won't bother you again.

Great demo! Nifty little references too, I'm not that much into the music - but thumbs up for being different none the less. Keep it up! Great stuff coming up I hope!
The demo feel not might not entirely be there, and I don't know exactly why. But kick ass transitions making demos what they should be in that regard.

excellent demo.. 8.5/10 point :))
I feel asleep during this demo.
Boring...
Boring...
Rulez big time! I can't imagine how much time should be spent placing, timing and tweaking all the little details in it.
But for some reason it seems that the clock/gears scene got the gears wrong (i.e. their spinning and teeth sizes are physically wrong). Not a problem though, lots of demos get gear movement or even the concept of a gear wrong (shameless plug: Syntonic Dentiforms got them right :))

Totaly cool transitions all the way. Rulez big time, super super super demo.
i'm a bit disappointed, because despite stunning visuals and code, music is definitely not my cup of tea :( with some more demoish soundtrack it could have been probably the best demo ever for me.
by the way, how long did it take you to code/model everything ?
by the way, how long did it take you to code/model everything ?
i disagree with those saying that this demo is 'overloaded' or has 'material for 5 demos'. i think the (amount of) content is really quite perfectly finetuned, and not often have i seen a demo with such attention to direction. 'parts' last exactly as long as they remain interesting, and they contain always exactly as many elements as a watcher can absorbe. imho. the only thing i miss is any sort of coherence between the visuals and the music.
mad props, guys.

that skrebbel last sentence reminded me about another great kick-ass demo
"mad props out to deus ex machina and valium design, but not to ephidrena" :D

fabulous !
After watching again on my now fixed monitor, I noticed my previous comment about the cutscene is wrong - it is a transition as you come above water to the barbed wire part. I've shown this to several friends, some familiar with the scene and some not. All have been very impressed and one had me eject both of my dvd drives and kept his eye on my HDD light because he thought it was a video.. :)
Can't imagine how ASD will match or top this and Planet Risk. They both really are stunning in just about every way.. but I look forward to the next big release after a much deserved break!

simply beautiful. i'm astonished...
Impressive amount of effort and imagination put on this. The soundtrack is absolutely awesome and as imaginative as the visual content. Once again, congrats ASD guys!!! =]
Too busy, not one style of design, messy but the music and 3d was very good.
Piggie for this :)

Awesome trip, thank you for that.

Wow. This made me drop my jaw! Nice effects and you guys do the best transitions in the scene.
really good work!
Piece of art!
btw, is there a Dream Theater tribute i spotted in the music at 3:04?
hmm... after multiple watchings, i can confirm that its more impressive than planet risk but not as good a demo. Needs more of a theme, or at least more of a theme that flows. Having said that, more destroying of icons and rebuilding them as something might have done it, who knows?
Massive demo.
Too many things to watch at the same time...
Also +++ for the transitions

Yay! Very great. Not as great as their previous efforts imho, but still great.
A superb Soundtrack and I really dig t he Polaroid Part.

kewl. You did it. Again.
Electronic Arts CEO, watch this.

FX massive !

i don't think that words can express that prod... O_O
nothing that hasn't been already said here, but:
this is simply awesome. ok, the scenes do not have a "red line" but they are so well connected that the whole thing is just flowing from one kickass scene to the next even-more-kickass scene.
and best part of all was the history-reference thing, this really did cheer me up a lot
so thanks for one of the best pc demos ever imho

Has some nice hints to "ancient" demo productions.
The very genremixed music (although sounding nice!) didn't fit to a lot of the effects and so I barely felt a msx-fx sync during the show.
The overall look was way to overblown for my
personal taste and I don't like 4:3 fullscreen.
I'd rather stick to letterbox format or 16:9.
At all props for NOT using BUM,BUM,BUM 4x4 BEATS

I totally second what Dodge wrote about the music! Thank god it's not a bumm-bumm techno alike shit like in case speaking about many other recent pc demos!

better than any other ASD production at the moment... but i still disgusting the music :( .. anyway.. congrats!
rulez
Really fresh!
good work.
i must say, i am very disappointed. i was hoping that this kind of music in pc-demos was a thing of the past, but no. seriously, don't you guys ever feel ashamed? using guitars is by no means any taboo, but making rock-music this boring is. just listen to the drums!
seriously, there has been loads of progress in the world of "acoustic music". you guys should check it out. and please, make the soundtrack electronic next time, don't try to be something you're not. (in this case, an "acoustic musician")
and besides the music, the demo itself is waaaay to different. 30000 themes in stead of making a few good points. to be honest, i couldnt find one single message. the only good thing about this demo is that the effects are quite beautifully performed, but that won't help the lacking design.

even better, let leviathan compose more of it and eventually escalate into thrash metal :D

some thrash would be pretty refreshing indeed
Great visuals and excellent prog-metal soundtrack. Shame to the tunz-fanatics :)
a high quality originally written (as in not a cover) metaltune in a demo would kick ass. so i totally agree on that part, gargaj.
what i meant is that leviathan should spare us of these lame halflings.
what i meant is that leviathan should spare us of these lame halflings.
Beatiful design and music. Too much similarities with planet risk though. However, a hypermegarulez demo.
boring
nice effects
I had to wait more than month to verify all my for and against. And recently I realized that this prod definitely deserves a thumb up, and is also the best production of this year. I hope that You'll not sit down and drink from the cup of glory, but will still search for new challenges and try to suprise us once again!
Cheers!
Cheers!
Awesome
Exellent demo !! Music is very nice ! ASD is Fabulous !
... omfg.
horrible colors and annoying music.
I just registered to say that this is the most impressive demo I have seen since the introduction of 3D cards. Absolutely wonderful! It's like a constant light orgasm (don't know how else to describe it). The music doesn't always fit, though... a bit too heavy on the guitars here and there.
great demo and even greater music...
good engines, but has in my opinion no style and becomes boring.
HOLY SHIT! the music _absolutely rocks_ ! so much different styles combined into a lovely but rockin' tune! big respect to the two composers. i'm not worthy. ;) btw: people, stop that stupid discussion about style, it's all about music which is borderless.
I like it for the few seconds I was able to watch it.
It runs very choppy on my Athlon 64 X2 3800+ with Geforce 7800GT with 1GB of RAM.
Same with planet risk. Using latest drivers from nVidia.
Anyone else have this issue? The whole thing stutters very strangely, planet risk does the same thing. I am led to believe there is a problem with the engine running on this card or this driver ver.

it is totally smooth with the latest stable nvidia drivers (78.01 or something) on a 6800 with an AMD 64 here (2.8ghz and 2Gb of ram) (XP)

prismra: Throw your Creative sound card out of the system. :)
Holy crap! How did you know I had a creative card? Lemmie try it with my M-audio card and see what the deal is here...
Well I disabled the creative x-fi card and used my M-audio delta card for default wave playback and it did the same thing.
I'm using nVidia SATA RAID, could that do anything like this?

3-fingered salute solved the problem I was having.
Amazing demo, guys, I wish I had three thumbs!
Thanks for doing something different with the design, music etc.
Speaking of music: If I may ask, what software, plugins, DAW, synths etc did you use to make the tunes?

You know it's the oddest thing. I have no idea what was causing that issue. This demo, Planet_risk and perfect love showed the 'jerky' behaviour and others did not. I even tested doom 3 (just to test some variables) and I was hitting 54 frames at 1680-1050 high detail. I was running a lot of different demos and playing with WinUAE (which I manage to make crash, a lot) and I am thinking it was some kind of driver corruption/windows issue. For some reason, upon a clean reboot, they all worked fine. Sorry for wasting your guy's time.. : )
I forgot to vote... oops.
This ist the Best Demo ever... impressive. Simply impressive.
And the Music... made it on my favorite playlists again (just right behind dreamchild). I wonder if there is more aMusic-music out there...

amphetamine tears is one of my all-time favorite songs (not only among scene prods). that's so brilliant that there isn't a day i live without thinking of those melodies. amusic and leviathan, thank you for all your work since dreamchild.
and the demo. navis, you are a maniac hardcoding all these stuff. i still get shivered on some scenes even though i watched it a hundred times before (not an exaggeration).
there are some glitches like intersecting faces and polys lost to cull face. but that's mentionable only because this is an incredible demo.
oh, and i know i am a total nerd. but i just love asd.

I'm really impressed with this prod. Not only for the music, meshes, effects and transitions but (after reading some comments from Navis itself) for the coding work itself.
After all the code is still important in demoscene... is it?

when i watched it, i thought i get a stroke. this is a hell of a trip, and its incredibly beautiful. and it just doesnt end! it goes on an on!
this is very good work. the music is excellent, the visuals are striking (not everything, but i have my favorites.. i think, i like the roses part most).
this demo sparkles with love.

Mezzo
I second Dipswitch.
3d deluxe!
When the roses come up, followed by the moon out of the water and the guitar and the mandolin plays it is just magical - and watching it live on bigscreen with the entire scene (Yes, @ Assembly 2005) was just awesome. You sit there and think "AH, so I'm watching the winnerdemo right now".
Even if i don't like metal (or rock) in demos, this demo was nice and it sure was the worthy winner.

oh look - ASD just lifted the demo bar to unthinkable heights. again.
what can I say? over the top! :)
Barroque, imaginative, crushing soundtrack...
Seems a bit less improvised than PlanetRisk.
Now some parts and transitions take sense ...
like...some kind of Oniric-Dalinian-paranoia.
Navis
Reporting serious low framerate on nvidia gForce FX 6200 vram 512DDR + Celeron 1.3Ghz 512DDR RAM
Other GLSL or DX9.0c shader stuff runs pretty smooth, but the cgCode executes at 2 or 3 Fps wtf?¿

jak: a celeron 1.3 with a gf 6200 will have trouble with almost any demo/game in the past year or two. i suggest upgrading both cpu and video card.
phoenix sorry to disagree with that, running COD2 fucking or Humus examples or Fair play 2d Queen, fancy smooth on that config.

once a dedicated demogroup seeks plenteous effects accumulating in one single demo means they've figured out nothings.
uguys do a huge non valuable masses this time, imo!
Have uguys heared about the "less is more" idea,by van der Rohe, which tells the process of abstraction is one of the ways to approach and create the demo essentials. concept in simplicity not only make sense in architecture-design,,but also tells to a visualizing demo nowadays.

This is an awesome demo..
so gooood
freaking good. disverves its place on the pouet top10 list
well, actually tried this with anaglyphic 3d glasses last night and the part almost in the beginning with twirly lines and spinning blades actually looks much better. :) fantaplasmastic!
The monstrous amount of work gone into this is clearly evident so it deserves a thumb up based on this fact alone..
however, like planet risk, the music just doesnt seem to work.. (as brilliant as it is..)..
I guess incredibly busy visuals and incredibly busy sound makes the whole prod seem bloated.. imo.. it's just too much :)
having said that there's no way in hell I'm not thumbing this up lol.. so go figure ;-)

oops..i ment to give a THUMB UP not a PIG. sorry.
:) like some kind of (A)(L)SD trip :) very nice
stunned! watched while the scene.org awards was at the breakpoint party. just incredible stuff.
Avarage to good music. The effect aren't my style.
Instant classic!
Maybe many transitions on the music but anyway superb. Great visuals also.
i'm a bit sad this doesnt run with wine. ;)
OH....MY....WORLD.....
Here goes the definition of amazing.....
Here goes the definition of amazing.....
Excellent !!! i think ANDROMEDA software developpement DESERVE this part of his name ^^
the roses part really make me amazed ... and the whole demo is better than Planet Risk, who was really "too much"
"too much FX kill the FX"

a typical ASD demo (blur, overlays, postprosessing, cameras etc).. the best in content and ideas though..
the music is cool (i don't like prog metal but this track does the job.. and i guess it was a pain in the ass to compose :)
AND..
it has cubes.. :)
so thumbs up.

dont know where Ive been keeping my thumb all this time.
The music and visuals makes it feel like some kind of 1990s CG demoreel. Piggie it is.
what an eye-candy...
very good..
yes!
Wow... Amazing!
Visuals and design spectacular. But the music destroys the whole demo, makes it booring.
So only a Piggy for me....Synth guitars should be banned.

That's no "synth guitar".
...:::platt:::...
One question guys? Why Iconoclast on my Dell Inspirion 6400 with GeForce 7300 runs 10 frames per second?
The only thing I remember clearly from the Assembly 2005 competitions is that I liked this production a LOT.
superb tech level!
WTF was THAT?!?
I am of course very much taken aback with the technicality of it all, but to me it's just too much. This basically comes down to my taste for the art of suggestion. ANDROMEDA (?!?) Software Development seem to have a sense for the opposite, namely just making expicit every idea that springs to mind. Consequently, there is no room for the inexplicit x-factor which imho makes a good demo. There is a -feel- to good demos, whereas this one just leaves me feeling numb and estranged after two minutes. The music just adds to this. No one will ever question that Stevie Vai is a technically brilliant musician - but that still doesn't make his music good.

@Archmage
I'll code a demo that will just display a black screen. This will give the watcher plenty of opportunities for imagination. I guess you'll love it ;)

Adok: At least that would be much more iconoclastic in the real sense of the word.
Archmage: ironic commentary. (is it in the name of the group who made it? :) All in all to much going on at the same time but still a good demo imho. Deserves respect..
top ten for me. Firstly there is powerful imagery (the swimming whale skeleton in a cube), secondly it branches from standard demo music with style. Thirdly it packs so many effects in (deforming bouncing solids) and throws them away which says to me : we're good but we don't sweat it. Lastly as a coder I can watch it again and again looking for all the little tricks and wondering...
Greatest demo from ASD!
One of the greatest demos ever!!
My personal CDC candidate number one! Love the surrealistic ambience and extremely fluent scene transitions. This is real digital ART.
Just awesome.

magical. Showed the wife, she felt it was the first demo shed seen (and she has seen a lot) that went beyond into art. Well its her taste.
kicks some serious ass. wow.
You got my CDC guys! :)
Wow. After tediously downloading many, many demos, some of which are actually very well done, this one surpasses them all. Amazing piece of art! I don't know what these people who don't like it are seeing, but there must be something wrong with their eyes.
The only thing that could possibly improve it is to remove (or at least lessen) the foggy haziness. I hate that effect. It's even worse in Planet Risk. It's like putting a piece of wax paper in front of the Mona Lisa. What's the point? Let me see your amazing work unfettered by unnecessary effects.

It's a best demo i've seen ever!
ASD is da best.
ASD is da best.
:O
Still wonderful.
Incredible! Cool to hear some greatly composed progressive music in a demo...
The continuity of this demo is stunning. One amazing scene replaces the next in a continuous stream of beauty... accompanied in part by a runaway guns'n'roses guitarist. The unique mix of musical genres makes a great addition to the atmosphere though!
Your demonstrations are really an improvement for the demoscene, they are perfect in all categories, I have never seen such a beauty before. Keep up your excellent work and never move to these soulless 64k-productions.
Another missing thumb.. great stuff all around.
teh greatness
It runs like shit on my A500! Any chance of a fix? But seriously, well done guys for still looking in on this and helping people out so long after the demo was released. Some would have left it forgotten (and possibly half finished too ;)
great stuff
Grrr :)
This is it !
This is it !
best demo ever (OO) amazing amount of different effects (OO) so nice colors and so cool muzic (OO) many parts, and none of them is boring, all is good, nothing to throw... i ask myself if you are... god ? (^^)
respect
Wow! Great effects and the flow of the demo is very good. And the music is just stunning!
just the thumb
Great demo. I'll admit I didn't like the music initially but after giving it some time to grow on me (mainly by playing it in fretsonfire, lol) I've started to love the tune too.
:D
Massive amount of content and great transitions.
Great Demo! I really love the smooth transitions between the very nice scenes and after watching it several times I like the music too. The only thing I still miss is some kind of “deepness” it seems to be a fantastic “storm of pictures” but not more. Nevertheless on of my absolute favourites of the last years (I even have a copy on my mobile phone :) ). Thumb up!
One of the best demos ever!
all in all okay, just the music sucks sometimes
Beautiful. Gives me headache if I watch it 2 times in a row, but great.
You guys really need to share your change scenes diploma with some other groups ;)
Iconoclast rocks even 2 years after its release. Period.

Everything about this demo is MASSIVE! :-)
The music, the effects, the transitions, ...

Outstanding - I like the flow in this one even more than in Lifeforce.
The beginning of this demo beats about anything else i've seen. From the into and until the circle saws slices *teh object* into pieces.. Simply rules!!
wow. still a really great demo.
Thats the one I should vote,
The music is amazing and with sync with demo.
I love the "franshie" scene with acordeon and next with "manga girl like in the window and the pigeons" :)

I enjoyed watching this demo a lot. I liked the continous "flow" of the demo and the music: totally different from what we are used to listen in demos.
Brilliant
Almost forgot: I really love the approach of the SR2-glenz, and the bee form Stars (with 23608 faces :D)
Another forgotten thumb.
Wow... VERY awesome and great music, too!
Yup
great music, nice demo
ASD rocks! Simply
Excellent demo !
Amazing !
Did not thumbed up it yet? Damnit =)
Flows like glass.
Yepp!
great demo, great direction. kudes to amusic&leviathan for the great music! oh, and that Second Reality flashback rocks :P
still fucking genius.
Cool effects and nice music
this demo loses it. it has lots of something but not a single bit of anything.
poor man's lifeforce.
poor man's lifeforce.
Yes, this demo is really cheap.
(of course I was ironizing, notice the very first comment...)

.
Great visuals, great music, but I completely don't see the connection between those elements.
forgotten thumb on an instant classic great demo :D

Excellent music.
I haven't voted for this?! Huh?!
Absolute masterpiece! Like a beautiful dream sequence! I've never seen anything like it from any other group.

what to say? its obvious : it rocks !

Excellent demo with an awesome music that fit perfectly the ambiance... And the end is just amazing!

well crafted. doesn´t catch on me, though
you guys are insane
This demo never really grabbed me at the time and, after watching it again, it still doesn't. Obviously the music, the effects, the design, the transitions and the general flow are all excellent but something's missing for me. There were parts of this demo that just jarred too much - like the oldschool demo references - and the music went over the top a few too many times. Still a great experience though, and a real sign of the great things that were to come...
still one of my favourites
Superb graphics and awesome music, but most of all - beautiful design.
The fact I have not already thumbed this up is proof there is no god.
whoops, a forgotten thumb up. Great work!
ASD
nice one..
great
Very pleasant to watch!
amazing work
incredible
good shit.
my fav <3
Love this one... just wish it was available in something more than 800x600. If ever a higher res version could surface, I'd be first in line.
First demo from ASD I saw. Time to thumb it up !
So perfect
mandatory
excellent!
Just one word: extraordinary.
Excellent stuff, the only minor problem I had with it is the music - it's brilliant, but wouldn't stay in one long genre long enough to hook you!
Professional PLUS!
there should be much more CDC's for this masterpiece, cmon !
only one word: ASD
Can't say I like when so much content is packed together, but when it's treated with such utmost care I can't help it. :D
Still amazing thing
runs great on really old machines :)
excellent transitions......
One of my less favorite ASD demos. One third top-class content, one third decent content, one third pretty fucking awful content, and those go for both the music and the visuals. Probably the first time in ASD demo where there are actual cohesion between the visuals and the music. It really feels like the demo is directed to the music. Again not exactly matured yet (had to wait for couple more years) but still a fine demo.
Mostly what noby said. I think it works very well as a music video. The disintegration and slicing effects are cool, as are the glowing blue wraps. I also like the clever re-use of meshes and effects, it doesn't get samey. I didn't realise at first that the creatures pulling the stone face are meant to be stylised apes... but now I think they work well! Funny Second Reality reference!
cool music, great effects, but it felt kind it was jumping from effect to another maybe bit too fast for my taste, overall great prod!
This is a master-piece. A classic.
23806 faces!
How it's possible, I never thumbed up this all-time classic!
Don't ask me. ;o)
soundtrack ruins it for me :(
My oh my - the music is so much hurting my ears. But I must say, that the visual "chaos" going on, suits the music, or is it the other way around? :)
Andromeda Software Development! ;O)
still a beauty in 2013 <3
So many memories attached to this prod.
For me, back then, it defined what ASD is - as this was the first prod I ever saw from ASD, I learned that ASD are the guys with the transitions that, if you don't pay attention for a second, you're forgetting how you got from point A to point C via point B. That those are the guys with that damn awesome awesome guitar riff, that makes me want to play the demo over, and over and over again.
So, if I ever get the question what demo I'd take on a lonely island with me - it'd be this one. As I've maybe seen it 30 times now, and still find things I've not noticed before. It's that damn good sync, that isn't in your face - but so subtle it make one smile if one notices it - to the sheer amount of details for that overall content rich prod that makes me sit here - like a small child wondering how all of this has been assembled.
Was the music first - or the visuals, and does it even matter?

and the introduction is just wow <3
Unbelievable amount of content! Too bad those kind of demos are rarely made today, although I can understand why. And I love, love the transitions and all the little details! The music is not my cup of tea, though.
Certainly deserves a thumb.
Fro a long time one of my fave windows demos.
Too bad that I noticed about this only about 10 years later. Absolutely like this demo! I cannot tell if I prefer the lush, amazing and colorful graphics or the hard kicking mixture of acoustic, chilling and slashing music on it! Eighter way, was pleasant to see for the entire moment!
This is one of ASD's best, I think. Whatever - it rules.
Watched this multiple times tonight, and before that .. still beautiful! One of my favorite ASD prods. Excellent graphics, concept, music, everything fits so nicely!
Although one of my least favorite demos from ASD, it's still a really good one.

Cool for its time , i guess .
epic describes it best
First time i watched the demo, it was not like the experience i had on another ASD demos. I think it's because i watched the demo because i know that the Lifeforce is related to this demo. This demo is excellent at all. The beginning part of soundtrack is nice.
what nagz said
so much happening I never remember it all
Wow. Just wow, the connections, transitions and ever encapsulating concepts that run through each other is awesome! Even today this serves as a source of inspiration. Le-awesome!
one love
Impressive visuals, even after fourteen years.
legendary
Just discovered this demo! A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! The flow, the different moods with muzik matching perfectly. Congrats to the authors for this masterpiece
How did I forgot to give this masterpiece a thumbs up? It's a brilliant work of art!
