Needs >2 gHz to run fairly allright. It surprised me that Java applets need so fucking many gHz. Our next demo will probably be on a different platform!

java doesn't need fast cpu's, lazy coders on the other hand ...

ehh.... the only plus side was that there were a lot of effects, but i'd rather watch a single good one. hasn't there been any progress with java demos for the last 6 years?!

code was ok good. but the music, the lack of design originality or attitude, not to mention my hatred for java as a demo platform makes this suck in my eyes.

Hey Corial! Cool demo... Looking forward to seeing it on a faster machine, currently my main machine is broken, and then my only machine is a 400MHz AMD...

But my next demo is still coming along nicely. Pure software rendering only, has my arms knee deep in MMX assembler by now :-)

Depth, remember: assembler is good for you :). Can't wait for that demo of yours!

When you said 2Ghz, I thought it would be useless trying to run it at my Pentium2 at 266Mhz. However, most parts were running fairly well here..

would have rocked in 1739!

I'm sorry, but this is somewhat lame and unlikable. Definately not the visuals. Please, at the very least, do your sounplayer in java next time as well, to eliminate the sync and browser problem!

For some strange reason (it has nothing to do with this particular demo) i don't have Java working in MSIE on WINXP-Pro. ;/ Only in Mozilla, which is the only browser i use here regularly. BTW, Sun Java (Mozilla, MSIE plugin) is twice as fast as MS Java (MSIE native).

Thanks for *not* releasing it at some party anyway.

Manko: no wonder there has been no progress. OpenGL is only accessible by native extensions, and C++ can be much more elegant at times, especially when caring about performance. So Java is a "try once and never again" for demo coders.

Well. Java is to slow to do something nice with, so why bother? Even though Java EE makes everything smoother. Had even problems with closing this demo...

and again ppl are divided into two groups about this java production, the ones who like it and the one who dont. meanwhile i think these two groups cant come together. so all you java coders outthere, just keep it going.
corial, i like your demo, it shows that java has the ability to be a demo platform, so thumbs up! btw: you should better use the jar tool to pack your files, look cleaner on your hd. and imho it should better be an application than an applet, so the code depends on your jre and not on the browsers vm. anyhow, thumbs up again and dont stop coding java!

eye: well, we [bohemiq] once did a technically quite nice javademo, using software rendering, so progress has been made.. nevertheless you are right, java remains slow and sucky compared to C++, thus no more yawa :)
pinhead: how can I make an application instead of an applet, any docs?

public static void main() :D
maali: :). Well ok, I should probably have specified that I was interested in information about the drawing capabilities...

You say it yourself: *ANY* book from the store or library! I have Java 2 Kompendium here, but i can't recommend it to you for other reasons. I'm not sure Eckel's book covers UI issues...

But why bother with Java? Options are:
* FreePascal. Bolt on Boehm's Garbage collector if you like. Then it has fairly Java-like behaviour, though it looks differently. To use it learn Delphi first.
* D programming language. A not so consistent soup of Java and C, but very useful and easy to work with. And you can help promote, unlike Java, a not vastly commercial product. ;) Whole program optimizations, requieres typically half the code of C++.
* C++ - much more work than D, more cryptic, but hey, unlimited tweaking power and a lot of libs to borrow!

I would think that releasing source (say, under GPL - not very demo friendly license) would be a better alternative than Java if portability is the consern.

@corial: drawing within applications can be done via BufferedImage objects and the use of "getRaster().getDataBuffer()". just have a look at the javadocs. its very easy.
